7835. judithathome - 2/12/2013 6:21:20 AM It's so odd to be "in the place" where every little pang sends me spiralling into "worst case". Never used to be like that...quite the opposite, frankly. 7836. thoughtful - 2/12/2013 11:36:41 PM Glad to hear the good news J! It's hard but try not to let the aches and pains get to you as stress can be so damaging to the body, and you've already had enough of that. As my old friend used to say to me, don't borrow trouble.
You might consider trying mindfulness meditation for the back pain...it has been proven to be a great aid in living with chronic pain. 7837. judithathome - 2/13/2013 6:07:32 AM I take only 2 pills a day...I'm somewhat oblivious to the pain most of the time. 7838. alistairconnor - 2/13/2013 6:49:49 PM Any of you good smart people do turmeric?
Apparently it's a traditional Thai remedy for the common cold (!), and good smart friends have reported it's quite good against the flu too (!)
The smart southern European friends buy whole roots and grate it into their salads etc. I tried to buy some in my local organic shop the other day and couldn't find it. Then I looked it up and in French it's called cucurma, and I already had some in the cupboard. So now I have a teaspoonful in milk every morning.
(Also read somewhere it has anti-cancer and anti-alzheimer properties, but um whatever.) 7839. Ms. No - 2/13/2013 7:48:14 PM I put it in my koobideh, but that's about it. 7840. judithathome - 2/13/2013 10:57:01 PM I started taking tumeric capsules and broke out in a wicked rash...I'm sure it works for some people but for me, it's like pineapple...highly allergic to it. 7841. wabbit - 2/14/2013 1:26:50 AM I use turmeric whenever it doesn't conflict with what I'm making. Also lots of ginger and garlic. Mostly I make "refrigerator surprise".
I'm at my parent's house for a few more days (had foot surgery mid-December) and we got about 28" of snow Friday-Saturday. Gorgeous, but having no power from Friday early evening until Monday night sucked. Then I had a weird day on Monday - aside from being clean as a whistle ('nuff said), my temperature dropped to 95.5°. I couldn't get warm. Several blankets and a kerosene heater later, my temperature was up to 101°. What a crappy day. Temp came back down with some cold rags on my head and neck, feel pretty much normal again. Just strange.
I want to be back in my own home. 7842. wabbit - 2/14/2013 1:28:10 AM JaH, what a relief, I'm so glad to hear the news. Not great about the pain, but excellent news on the cancer front. 7843. alistairconnor - 2/14/2013 10:54:01 AM Delighted, Judith! Not about the pain, of course.
Sorry to hear about the nuts-and-bolts issues, Wabbit. I hope the hardware will perform well. That's a pretty extreme temperature range! I wonder what can do that? My Mrs. often reports sudden shifts from feeling hot to feeling cold etc, but it's probably menopause-related rather than actual temperature swings. 7844. thoughtful - 2/16/2013 4:11:52 PM wabbit, hope you're feeling better by now. Sounds awful. We had the snow, but kept our power which was wonderful.
Some infections can cause temperature drops as well as increases...and of course you have other health challenges too.
Don't talk to me about hot flashes! I still suffer from them and I think they're getting worse...I've had them for years. The outlook isn't good...mother had them til she died in her 80s and her mother had them til she died at 98!
I've been using DIM, iodine and black cohosh, exercise and meditation, all to little avail. I won't use hormones as I believe they caused or were a major factor in my mother's cancer.....so layers it is and turtle necks are out! 7845. arkymalarky - 2/16/2013 6:46:33 PM Luckily mine went away for the most part, but my SILs mother still has them in her 70s. I have other issues but ways of at least managing them. Not much way to manage flashes without hormones. 7846. judithathome - 2/16/2013 7:11:22 PM I won't use hormones as I believe they caused or were a major factor in my mother's cancer
Caused it in mine! 7847. thoughtful - 2/24/2013 12:08:17 AM Good article in today's NYT mag section about junk food and how the industry is about as bad as the tobacco industry in terms of understanding how to make their products as addictive as possible, even though they are fully aware of all the statistics on obesity, diabetes, heart disease and strokes. It's all about the share of the US stomach...nutrition and health be damned. 7848. wabbit - 3/9/2013 6:20:44 PM
The foot is recovering nicely, the pins have been out for about six weeks now. My little toe is still trying to tuck back under toe 4, but is accepting retraining. It's a good piece of surgery - remove a bunch of bone and the metatarsal heads on the four small toes, scrape some bone off the big toe joint and screw it together, then let it fuse. I'm having to learn how to walk without rolling off a flexible big toe joint, but at least the pain is gone. The other four toes feel odd, swinging around freely. I'll have the right foot done in a few months. 7849. arkymalarky - 3/9/2013 7:09:21 PM Wow. It'll be interesting to see how different your walking is when both feet are healed 7850. judithathome - 3/9/2013 8:53:06 PM I just called Keoni in and showed him the xrays...I said "That's Wabbit's foot!"
Sorry, it brought a grin....
Dang, woman....that's some serious stuff you had done! 7851. wabbit - 3/10/2013 12:21:41 AM LOL!
It was long overdue. I'll be able to wear real shoes (no heels, of course).
The surgeon told me it took 3-1/2 hours and that healing would be 4-6 months. I'm at three months now. I asked them to take photos during, but nobody did. Maybe next time. He x-rayed my right foot a couple weeks ago, and while it was the less painful foot for me, it's the more involved surgery for him. 7852. thoughtful - 3/10/2013 9:51:29 PM Wow that's something! Best wishes for a speedy recovery! 7853. alistairconnor - 3/13/2013 6:34:22 PM Crochet hooks eh? 7854. thoughtful - 3/29/2013 4:39:59 PM J@h, how are you feeling these days....are you finished with all the treatments?
