7957. judithathome - 12/31/2014 10:04:38 PM Make that seven.... 7958. arkymalarky - 12/31/2014 10:32:05 PM I'm so sorry, Judith. I remember you talked about her often. 7959. wabbit - 1/1/2015 5:36:04 PM Judith, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. 7960. judithathome - 1/1/2015 10:55:08 PM Am bummed as hell...but thanks, guys. 7961. robertjayb - 1/8/2015 4:05:53 AM Regarding pets: Not a cat person yet somehow when visiting cat homes they wind up in my lap. Perhaps they sense a nonbeliever and are doing a bit of proselytizing. It is pleasant.
But canines...my dogs have been Elmer, Duke, Beau, Lisa, Dammit, Shiner, and now the incomparable Kate. A pity if you can't shed a tear when your dog dies. And they do.
On friends: I hope I have the courage of Judith's friend.
At the moment I believe I do...but later on??? Judith's sharing is a reminder to me to get a living will (or whatever they are called) in order.
Woe is I: Sunday I broke a tooth...chomping on a healthy damn almond and something popped. Not the nut. Can't see the periodontist for two weeks. Chewable baby aspirin and the occasional hydrocodone are working to suppress the not-too-severe come and go pain. Some good Irish whiskey helps too. Old bridgework is involved and I'm afraid that the $olution will call for one or more implant$. Big ouch!
7962. wabbit - 1/16/2015 11:21:21 PM I have found my next furchild. When I was down to just one cat, I considered finding her a companion, but she thrived as an only cat so I didn't bring another cat home.
I had my eye on one cat in particular at a shelter about an hour or so from where I live. She had been there for a while, certainly as long as I had been considering getting another cat. I just emailed them and they told me she's been there since 2011 - she was briefly adopted, but returned when the adopter had to be hospitalized. I told them to give her my last name, she is mine! She's about ten years old now. They have a couple other long term residents and as long as they get along, I'll take at least one other. Technically I'm allowed two cats, but I had three when I moved in and really, who is going to know?
Can't bring her home for a few weeks, having some work done and don't want to bring cats into a new place when there will be banging and sawing going on...but I can hardly wait! 7963. wabbit - 1/16/2015 11:29:25 PM robert, I feel your pain. I've lost or broken fillings on some of the least likely things, one being a malted milk ball, and I dread the dentist, even though I adore mine. He was my dentist when I was in college ages ago, then for thirty years I was living elsewhere and had to find new dentists. When I moved back to MA and needed a dentist, I wondered whether he was still in practice. Lucky me, he was!
I hope your tooth is repairable. My mother had to get implants and it was quite a process, not to mention expensive. I will say that she is very happy with them, now that it's over. 7964. judithathome - 1/17/2015 8:52:14 PM Robert, don't know how old you are but I would highly advise getting things in order...we have prepaid cremations for both of us with Neptune Society; have completed wills with a lawyer; and have an executor appointed.
Can't remember where you live but here, our wills cover the house and our monetary goods....the lawyer advised we make a list for the executor of the personal items we are leaving to family and friends because otherwise, if it is detailed in the actual will, the executor will have a bigger chore getting everyone signed off for the probate court.
My son left a hand-written will naming many, many friends...one gets the rodeo equipment, one gets the antique razors, one gets this gun, the other gets that one (he had 37 antique guns...)....it was a nightmare for my granddaughter getting everyone to sign official papers for the court, especially for some of these guys who had records and were getting guns!!
Anyhow, just a suggestion: keep your wills simple and bare bones....get an executor, and make a personal list of "gifts". Also, if you have a safety deposit box at your bank, make sure the executor is signed on to it. (Check all this out first with whomever draws up the will in your state, county that the "gift list" is legit where you live.) 7965. robertjayb - 1/21/2015 10:48:24 PM Thanks for the info, Judith. I am now a fairly active and chipper 78 and I believe we have things in hand but probably should do a review. Just remembered that the judge passing on spouse's inheritance of the Wisconsin place reacted to her residence in Texas as if it were terra incognita somewhere south of Patagonia. Must check if that would have any effect on our only son's task as executor and beneficiary. 7966. robertjayb - 1/21/2015 11:08:33 PM wabbit, I see your malted milk ball and raise you a jelly bean, culprit in a long ago broken tooth. I blame Ronald Reagan. Current episode has resulted in extraction and now a three-month wait to determine what comes next, if anything. 7967. judithathome - 1/22/2015 12:26:15 AM Robert, you and I are near one another in age...let me ask, do you feel insulted when others act as though you're "over the hill" when they learn your age?
It chaps me no end...we watch
b Jeopardy
every day and I still manage to beat most of those on the show...Keoni is astounded when I answer questions many of them miss.
I am still pissed beyond belief that when the show came to Europe for military contestants to participate and I had to cancel my tryout because of an "emergency" at the base where we were stationed. 7968. judithathome - 1/22/2015 12:27:33 AM Sorry...I forgot we don't have shortcuts here... Jeopardy. 7969. robertjayb - 1/22/2015 9:41:28 PM No, Judith, I'm probably oblivious but I don't recall that experience. I'm very upfront about being an old fart and that there are...the things that I used to do... (Guitar Slim) that I can't do anymore and newfangled stuff I know little about. I don't hesitate to ask for help from most anyone who is handy...and usually get it. Memory lapses and hearing problems sometimes make me feel like a dumbass but I just press on. Physically I had many, many more problems when in the undiagnosed grip of the hydrocephalus and being treated as a Parkinson's patient than I do now.
People are pretty nice. Sometimes a bit over-solicitous. At the car wash recently a girl was insisting that I take her seat when I really wanted to stand and brace my back against the wall. Finally I gave her a firm "Sit!" command. She did and laughed.
Then there was the woman who patted my head and complimented my beautiful white hair. Was she being kind or patronizing? I prefer to think she was hitting on me. Ha. 7970. judithathome - 1/22/2015 9:45:06 PM I think she WAS....! Ha! 7971. wabbit - 1/23/2015 1:16:01 AM Agree with JaH, definitely flirting there!
At 86 my father has the most beautiful hair, thick and silver/white, and he insists on wearing a flattop, as if he was still in the military. Drives my mother nuts. 7972. wabbit - 1/23/2015 1:17:36 AM I love caramels and don't dare eat them anymore. 7973. judithathome - 1/23/2015 9:00:50 PM Get some Werther's hard caramels in coffee/caramel flavor...you get the full flavor without the...problems.
I have three every night after dinner. Swoon... 7974. robertjayb - 1/23/2015 11:40:39 PM Interesting, wabbit, about your dad's hair. Probably it was my few well-shorn military years that prompts me to go a bit shaggy most of the time. 7975. robertjayb - 2/6/2015 9:05:44 PM Idiots!
More than 38,000 students — about 0.75 percent of the state's (Texas) overall school-age population — had nonmedical exemptions to school immunization laws statewide in the 2013-14 school year, according to Texas Department of State Health Services data. That figure, which includes students at both public and accredited private schools, has soared from just under 3,000 — or 0.09 percent — in 2004. (Texas Tribune)
These know-nothing goofballs put my splendid new grandson at risk. There oughta be a law. Oh, wait. There is a law.
7976. arkymalarky - 2/6/2015 9:18:02 PM They really need to build that border fence. Right in the middle of texarkana.
