If I was right in my guess, the answer is that the link isn't complete until you type the closing: </A>
If you start with:

You aren't yet done. Everything typed after that will be part of the link text, until it encounters a </A>

As a nit, it's a .jpg not a .gif, but the reason it doesn't work is related to a problem with the site itself, not your HTML.
BTW, if you try to go to the site and can see it, that doesn't prove anything. It will load the image from your buffer. Try going to the site and hitting refresh. You should get an error.

The link to the image in Message # 1284 was done correctly, but when you posted it, there was a problem with their site. I couldn't get into the site. So the link, which tries to get the image from the site, was also unable to get the picture, so it just showed the default icon for an image. Someone fixed the problems at the site, so it noew displays.

As an alternative, there is a free text editor here that makes HTML easy.
I never have to actually create the HTML, I click on the "link" command, and it asks me for the URL, then sets up the HTML correctly. The nicest part is that it always remembers closing tags, so I never leave an open tag. (Wabbit was the one that first pointed out this great program.)
