46686. arkymalarky - 11/10/2016 3:34:57 AM I hope it's not head of the department he doesn't remember. 46687. winstonsmith - 11/10/2016 9:52:27 PM Only around 50% of eligible voters turned out. Sadly, Trump voters showed up and he won. There will be a mid term election in two years. Time to start picking good candidates now and working on get out the vote plans. Historically, Democrats show up in low numbers for mid terms. It would be difficult (but very possible if more people show up) to take back the Senate. If we could take back the Senate, and if Ginsburg can hold on for two years, maybe we could just limit them to replacing Scalia and Thomas. 46688. arkymalarky - 11/10/2016 10:01:07 PM The thing is, the Democrats are going to have to do what the alt right's been doing 4 years, and that is to micro Grassroots Network. 308 radio and hate internet and some of these rural churches and communities, they've been disseminating a message generally filled with a lot of misinformation that's been flying under the radar for years. Nobody is considered rural voters important because they've never had any impact until this election. There is no structure for that with the Democrats to counter the hate and fear that's been propagated for so long among struggling real people. Hillarys ground game may have been excellent, but you have to cultivate and the Democratic party hasn't really bothered to do that since howard dean as far as I'm concerned. Maybe we can manage it without the racism and hate and fear, but Democratic party has to have something to offer Rural America and they just don't. For people out here, things as simple as rural Broadband would be great but nobody's doing it. All the right-wing does is give lip-service and keep them hating "other" and they never have to deliver anything and they never have to improve anything and the Democratic party offers nothing in the way of an alternative anybody out here can see, so really in retrospect the outcome is not that surprising. What's surprising is that the rural white people turned out in force, and that's because they finally felt they had someone they wanted to vote for. They did not want to vote for McCain or Romney. 46689. arkymalarky - 11/10/2016 10:01:33 PM For years.... 46690. judithathome - 11/10/2016 11:15:43 PM Only around 50% of eligible voters turned out.
This is sooo sad that in a free democracy, people don't even understand what a privilege being able to vote really IS...many countries around the world would...and have...fought for this very thing...the right to vote. 46691. iiibbb - 11/11/2016 12:29:50 AM I am beside myself... 46692. arkymalarky - 11/11/2016 3:22:20 AM I feel you 3i. I got things I want to think about and be happy about, but it keeps encroaching like a death. 46693. wabbit - 11/11/2016 8:02:55 PM So here's my thinking on this whole President Trump thing...as bad as it might be, it could get worse. Look behind Trump. Perhaps he'll resign once he realizes he actually has to do something besides self-promote. Or he'll resign because having been President for a year was enough to make him a genuine billionaire. Or he'll do or say something (can't help himself) and the Republican party stalwarts will go along with impeachment and move him out so they can have Pence. Frankly, that being the choice, I prefer Trump.
Sheesh. 46694. judithathome - 11/11/2016 9:08:24 PM Just wait until Trump tries to get the Reps to put something up for a debate/vote and they refuse...he'll find out how Obama has felt for 8 years! 46695. judithathome - 11/12/2016 12:59:30 AM I wonder if ANYONE thinks Trump is going to "do" half the things he claimed he would do on day one? Or at any time during his "reign"....today alone he has said he may not get rid of ObamaCare completely.
What do you think he will back off on tomorrow....or in one month, two months time?
The man is a fraud...he appealled to people who were pissed off about the election of a black man to the highest office in the land and he was able to convice these malcontents that a SHYSTER was better than someone with intelligence and compassion for the least amomg us.
I seriously wish Biden had run....
However, reality tells me it is highly unlikely for a Democrat to win after 8 years of another Democrat....it's as though the country needs to hit bottom before before they see the light.
And trust me...it's going to be a ROUGH bottom landing for everyone. 46696. iiibbb - 11/12/2016 5:13:54 PM A few thoughts.
1) In my heart of hearts I believe in the arc of justice on race and on gender. I do honestly believe that this country will eventually reach a satisfactory place on these issues one day.
2) Climate change is not going to be as forgiving. I am barely convinced that the world will now not suffer some cataclysm due to climate change. I don't know how many will suffer... but it's going to be a lot and unlike social issues that have setbacks... there's no redo on this issue.
3) I am so angry with my mother from NC who voted Trump after almost not voting for him. She's voted R her whole life and it wasn't enough. I work in Renewable Energy told her that Trump's election likely will result in me losing my job and she was incredulous. When I told her that of the few things Trump has not been vague about it's been climate change denial and his desire to increase fossil fuel extraction. They also want to cut taxes and spending.... I'm soft money funded... I am literally the easiest and first kind of guy they get rid of.
She told me I should have more faith and write my senator and fight for my job--- as if that would offset an election 'mandate'.
I'm so mad at here I can't stand it and I really need to figure out how to process these feelings without creating a rift... because I am distraught. I've rejiggered my career credentials 5 times since I graduated and every time I get into something market or political events collapse that area of research or industry. Yet she gets on me for not having faith.
To put the to key points she brought up while discussing it is... "[what about the economy... my checking acount earns less than 1%]" and "[What about the coal miners, that work is all they know]"
What about me and your fucking grandchildren? 46697. iiibbb - 11/12/2016 5:15:57 PM Plus trump is an a_hole... and minorities are going to hurt under him... immigrants are going to hurt under him.... civility between religions are going to hurt under him.
I have no idea what to do with my life... I'm 47... who's going to hire a guy... I don't even know how to change my credentials anymore. 46698. arkymalarky - 11/13/2016 7:00:59 AM We'll just put one foot in front of the other and do what we gotta do. Ironically, the people who are going to be most hurt by the Trump election are the ones who voted for him. The things they want changed are the things that he can't change, like creating jobs out of thin air in places where they just simply don't exist anymore, and the things he's going to do are going to hurt lower income people, especially rural lower income people, like dismantle the safety net. 46699. arkymalarky - 11/13/2016 7:03:17 AM Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton's popular vote lead is growing into the Millions. 46700. wabbit - 11/13/2016 3:35:00 PM I've been saying all week that as bad as things are going to be for women, people on fixed incomes, anyone who is sick and not wealthy, and anyone who isn't some approximation of orange, the thing that scares me more than anything is what his administration is going to do to the environment. Sarah Palin as Secretary of the Interior? Harold Hamm running energy? omfg. Who knows if the EPA will even survive?
And can someone explain to me why coal miners get to be coal miners because that's what their fathers and grandfathers and great-grandfathers did? Here in New England we hear this from fishermen all the time. Hey, wake up and smell the 21st century, you weren't born with the right to be a commercial fisherman. 46701. wabbit - 11/14/2016 12:52:59 AM I guess if you can't get GHW Bush, or Jeb Bush, or even the shrub, you may as well go for Billy Bush. What the hell, make him Press Secretary, why not? 46702. judithathome - 11/14/2016 1:03:30 AM Ironically, the people who are going to be most hurt by the Trump election are the ones who voted for him.
No kidding...I said to someone yesterday at a party that too many Trump voters had watched too much Apprentice and not enough C-Span.
They have no idea how Big G government works... 46703. judithathome - 11/14/2016 2:18:31 AM Breaking News: Reince Priebus chosen as Chief of Staff for the Donald...Bannon chosen as Chief Stratigest and Senior Counselor.
This country is doomed.
What next? Kelleyanne Conway as White House Spokes(wo)man??? 46704. Ms. No - 11/15/2016 3:39:47 AM Arky -- heard Howard Dean is throwing his hat into the ring to be head of the DNC again. Looks like we've got someone we can root for! 46705. judithathome - 11/15/2016 6:01:32 AM Don't hold your breath....though I would love Dean as Dem. Chair again, the money is on Keith Ellison.
Dean said today that it is a full-time job and I think he's right. When he took it on before, there was a Republican President, Senate, and House and when he left, there was a Democrat President, Senate and House.
But of course, they are probably going to choose Ellison...
