It's throwback weekend at the 2017 Australian Open - Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal in the men's singles final on Sunday, and the Williams sisters in the women's singles final on Saturday. How cool is this? I'm especially happy to see Venus playing so well.

There's a Aussie on my forum bitching about the Williams sisters and he was attacked by many who disagreed with him....as well he should have been!

Serena Williams has won a record 23rd Grand Slam women’s singles title, taking her seventh Australian Open crown with a 6-4 6-4 victory over sister Venus Williams on Saturday night at Rod Laver Arena. Her 23rd major title passes Steffi Graf’s 22 as the most successful women’s player in the Open era; Serena is now only one shy of Margaret Court’s all-time record...

Roger Federer defeated long-time rival Rafael Nadal in five sets to win Australian Open 2017, his 18th major title. The 6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 victory handed Federer his first major title in four-and-a-half years.

...Not since 1982 has a man defeated four top-10 seeds to win a major. Mats Wilander beat Ivan Lendl, Vitas Gerulaitis, Jose Luis Clerc and Guillermo Vilas to win the French Open that year; Federer has beaten Tomas Berdych, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka and now Rafael Nadal. That it should be Nadal who stood between Federer and this unlikeliest of triumphs only serves to add to its legend. The 14-time Grand Slam champion has long dominated his rivalry with the Swiss, an authority that reached far beyond his clay court prowess in their 35 meetings. Nadal came into the match with a 9-2 record against Federer at Grand Slams, incorporating wins on clay, grass and hard courts. This, their ninth showdown in a major final, was Nadal’s first Grand Slam defeat against the 18-time Grand Slam champion away from Wimbledon’s Centre Court...

Arrogate, ridden by Mike Smith, powered home in dominating fashion, winning by 4 3/4 lengths in the inaugural Pegasus World Cup. His primary rival, California Chrome, finished the race with an injury to his right knee. Shaman Ghost rallied for second, 3 1/2 lengths in front of Neolithic, who pressed the pace of Noble Bird and held on for third. Keen Ice was fourth and was followed, in order, by War Story, Noble Bird, Semper Fortis, Breaking Lucky, California Chrome, Prayer for Relief, War Envoy, and Eragon.

Thank you Arrogate, I made almost $35 on the race, lol!

Wow, what a Super Bowl, Patriots over the Falcons in overtime, 34-28! Still waiting for the haters to find something that the Pats did wrong this time...

Julian Edelman should open a seafood restaurant, call it Edelman's Catch.

The ads were great. Couldn't care less about the game OR the winners.

Trust me, it won't be long before Trump takes credit for the win....

I don't agree that this makes him the greatest ever, I'd go with the best at this distance racing now, but what a race - Arrogate came from last to first to win the Dubai World Cup. Even more impressive when you remember he didn't race as a two year old and hadn't run a single race this time last year. He was a late bloomer and the owners had patience. Good for them. Great ride by Mike Smith, reminiscent of his Zenyatta days. I made $0.50 on a $10 win bet, lol! A good day of racing in Dubai.

Speaking of the greatest ever, on Wednesday it will have been 100 years since Man o' War was foaled. Now imho he could be called the greatest ever...

Spotted Demon gets a 41 score and Mystical only gets a 42?? wtf?? Can't hold a 2 second ride against the bull's score, solid 45 at least.

Ok, even the cable installation guys make fun of me for following the PBR.

2017 Horse of the Yea for 2017, Gun Runner, won the 2nd Pegasus World Cup and retires to stud. West Coast finished second, followed by Gunnevera and Fear The Cowboy.

At age 36 years, Roger Federer won his 20th Grand Slam over Marin Cilic with a victory in the men's singles at the 2018 Australian Open.

Caroline Wozniacki won the women's singles in her first career major over Simona Halep 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4.

6732. wabbit - 6/10/2018 10:18:44 PM

Simona Halep wins her first grand slam at the 2018 French Open. After losing the first set 3-6 to American Sloane Stephens, Halep won the second and third sets 6-4 and 6-1 to claim victory.

Rafael Nadal has his 11th French Open title, winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 over Dominic Thiem.

Justify is the 13th Triple Crown winner, having won the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes leading wire-to-wire. Since he never raced as a two-year-old, I'm hoping he'll race next year, but breeding rights may nix that.

Mike Smith got his first Triple Crown as a jockey at age 52, and Bob Baffert has his second, only the 2nd trainer to win US horse racing's Triple Crown twice.

Gronkowski was the surprise of the race. Having never run more than a mile or run on dirt, but with a great ride by Jose Ortiz, he rallied from a slow break and being dead last and far behind to finish second. Well done. I won't doubt Chad Brown again.

Wabbit! I thought I'd find you in here after the Triple Crown win. How's everything going? Catch us up.

As depressed as I am considering the state of politics in this country these days...at least there is an absolutely gorgeous Appy draft-type lead pony at Keeneland that I am completely in love with.

6736. wabbit - 10/6/2018 10:46:44 PM

I miss riding.

6737. Ms. No - 10/12/2018 1:53:20 AM

I never did become a confident rider, but I loved it.

6738. wabbit - 10/19/2018 10:46:43 PM

I'm a "seat-of-your-pants" rider. My cousin taught me how to ride when I was about six years old. She put me on her middle aged thoroughbred Girl (while she rode the crazy horse Stormy - he was well named), and off we went through fields and over ditches in PA, it was wonderful. She has always said I was the more fearless rider she ever knew. I don't know about that, but she and Girl taught me well.
