I think I really need to get a smoker.

But to justify that ethically, I would have to take up fishing.

This peanut butter recall is huge. Apparently there are like 3 makers of peanut butter and they sell the stuff in these gigantic drums that go into all sorts of products including some labeled "organic" and "natural"

Just take a look at all the products including brownies, cakes, cookies, crackers, candy, pet food, snack bars, ice cream and fruit and vegetable products. Un freakin believable!

I wish to report in. Sorry for that, it's taking liberties to post like this.

I've follwed some of the nations health crises, so I could presume to add one or two tidbits, but I'ld rather mention my own ailment. It's become interesting to me, as to its unknown cause (etiology) and very dubious treatments.

I have what is known as Levator Syndrome. It's the muscle that holds up our rectum. You will not want that to waste away, it would have a most unpleasant outcome. The syndrome relates solely to pain, very uncomfortable pain. It's been going on for over 4 months and will not go away any time soon. The doctor just diagnosed it Monday, and I was sure of it last friday. I searched WebMd, once I knew for sure the proper direction and found the name. The surgeon agreed on Monday. I started a heat pad with massagers on it, and that has given the only relief to date. Even Aleve does near to nothing to ebb it. I cannot sit comfortably at all, not ever. It's very disturbing.

So, that's the bit of interest I take from it, that it's rare and of no known etiology. I don't like it, but at least it's interesting.

Oh Rick, that does sound uncomfortable. I'd never heard of Levator Syndrome. Sounds like heat and massage are about the best treatments.

I'm always surprised at how many of us here have health issues beyond the common cold and ear infections.

Have you tried acupuncture? It often can help with illnesses that trad'l medicine cannot treat.

Also you might try transcendental meditation...check out the stuff that Jon Kabat Zinn is doing on treating chronic pain through meditation...it's interesting stuff.

7472. RickNelson - 2/25/2009 8:06:27 PM

I asked about the acupuncture, but the surgeon didn't believe it would do any good, as the needles for something so far internal would likely have no effect.

I actually know my mantra for transcendental meditation. I've not tried it. With dubious treatments, being calm is of the most important cures.

I've been told that my body is over-reacting to stressors.

Nahhh, not me, over-react to stress, LOL!

7473. thoughtful - 2/25/2009 8:27:10 PM

well i certainly wouldn't take anything a surgeon says about acupuncture....rather go to an acupuncturist and give it a try.

the point of acupuncture

Ms. Jones underwent two more acupuncture treatments in the next few weeks, which she believes cured the levator syndrome.

7474. thoughtful - 2/25/2009 8:28:58 PM

Yes, I had a case of this about 3 months ago. A 75 y/o female with a 6 month history of Levator Ani spasms who was unable to sit because of constant pain. After failing conventional therapy of anti-spasmodics, sitz baths, and herbals, I treated her with 2 acupuncture treatments. Following the first treatment her relief was so dramatic that she and her husband were able to travel to Florida. After returning 2 weeks later (and, 80% improved) she completed her final treatment with complete resolution of the problem.

If you would like to discuss this case further or speak with the patient, please advise.

I never think of acupuncture, I don't know why. My mother swears by it.

7476. RickNelson - 2/25/2009 10:00:02 PM

Well, there ya go. Surgeons aren't known for alternatives are they----

I wouldn't use neruo surgery for anything but last resort, so as you recommend, just try.

Sure, thanks thoughtful, you're advise is good and I will look into it right away.

Stroke prevention device announced...

ORLANDO, Fla. — A novel device to treat a common heart problem that can lead to stroke showed promise in testing, but not without risk, new research shows.

The experimental device, called the Watchman, is the first to try to permanently fix atrial fibrillation, a heartbeat problem afflicting more than 2 million Americans. A federal Food and Drug Administration panel will consider it next month.

In the study, the Watchman was at least as good at preventing strokes as warfarin, sold as Coumadin and other brands. The drugs pose hazards of their own, so doctors and their patients are anxious for a better option.

Harry and Louise making a comeback?

This morning I saw my first commercial of the season attacking health care reform. Government-run health care they call it. Many of the supposed horrors of the Canadian system are viewed with great alarm.

I expect there wiil be much more of this sort of thing even though at present the Obama administration doesn't seem to be proposing any radical changes in health care delivery. They have kicked single-payer to the curb and don't even permit it to be discussed.

There is hope, maybe, for a public option that seems to have the for-profit people spooked. But the emphasis is still on insurance and not actual care. Until we squeeze out the 20 to 30-percent (estimates vary) of health costs wasted
on insurance there is small hope for real progress.

7479. wabbit - 5/20/2009 12:05:17 AM

I just want the same taxpayer-financed-for-life anything-I-need-or-want no-copay-ever health care that the Congress critters get. Oh wait — it's ok for them, but when it's me on the receiving end, it's socialized medicine. Nevermind.

In health news: Friday I cracked my thumb at the joint and am still wearing a brace on it...it still hurts but feels 24% better than it did over the weekend.

7481. robertjayb - 5/20/2009 2:32:43 PM

Twenty-four percent, huh? No marble shooting for you any time soon. I prescribe Tylenol with codene. I think it's Tylenol 3, or maybe 4.

7482. judithathome - 5/20/2009 8:48:28 PM

Strangelly enough, I'm doing fine with one vicodin in the morning and one in the evening. And yesterday, I took OTC Motrin and it worked just as well.

Krugman reports health industry double cross

That didn’t take long. Less than two weeks have passed since much of the medical-industrial complex made a big show of working with President Obama on health care reform — and the double-crossing is already well under way. Indeed, it’s now clear that even as they met with the president, pretending to be cooperative, insurers were gearing up to play the same destructive role they did the last time health reform was on the agenda.
.................................................

The medical-industrial complex has called the president’s bluff. It polished its image by showing up at the big table and promising cooperation, then promptly went back to doing all it can to block real change. The insurers and the drug companies are, in effect, betting that Mr. Obama will be afraid to call them out on their duplicity.

It’s up to Mr. Obama to prove them wrong.

Well, Robert, finally getting the nose surgery in early August, so I have the whole summer to dread it.

7485. Wombat - 6/1/2009 3:08:51 PM

Is this the deviated septum surgery?

7486. arkymalarky - 6/2/2009 1:02:28 AM

Yep. If I don't chicken out.
