WOW...what the hell happened at the Boston Marathon today?

Two huge explosions right at the finish line just as the race was ending.

10832. wabbit - 4/15/2013 9:53:24 PM

Two explosions at the finish line at about 2:50pm. Over 30 hospitalized, some critical, and two dead so far. A third explosion at the JFK library, no news about that yet.

10833. wabbit - 4/15/2013 10:07:05 PM

News is that the JFK library explosion was just after 3pm in the new wing. Three other devices found, one has been blown up (controlled explosion), two more being dealt with, looking for more.

Evidently there was no warning, no idea this was going to happen.

People are still finishing, they are being sent down Commonwealth Avenue to the Boston Common. People who hadn't gotten past Newton when the first two explosions happened were stopped.

Now there is a report of an explosion at the Tufts Medical Center.

10834. wabbit - 4/15/2013 10:41:40 PM

Two pieces of good news...no explosion at TMC and the library may not be related.

Just terrible. Boston always seemed so safe to me....

10836. thoughtful - 4/17/2013 2:06:52 PM

What? No calls for bans on pressure cooker sales?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

10837. robertjayb - 4/17/2013 8:30:35 PM

I had the same thought. Shame on us.

Do some simple subtraction and retool your argument to adjust for reality.

In my brief career on DU... what I think killed this was the gun control side working themselves up into a froth and the NY Safe act which cause the other side to mobilize and dig in.

Politics these days seems to be about taking an issue with a clear mandate and letting the passionate extreme turn it into something unacceptable (or at least create that perception)

1 meaningful background checks
2 reasonable limits on magazines

Anyone but an anarchist should be able to accept that

10841. wabbit - 4/18/2013 3:18:02 PM

A fire and chemical explosion at a Texas fertilizer plant in a small town north of Waco sent at least 180 people to hospitals, flattened buildings, prompted widespread evacuations and left as many as five to 15 people feared dead...

I think it was a difference between wide support and deep support. I also think that it will be a pyrrhic victory for the gun lobby.

10843. judithathome - 4/18/2013 6:17:22 PM

Wabbit, I watched that on the news until 3am...I've been to that little town...anyone who knows it stops off to buy the "world famous" kolaches at one of the many bakeries in town.

West has always been known as "little Germany".

10844. judithathome - 4/18/2013 6:17:51 PM

It must have felt like Dresden last night....

The Armed Citizen...

"An Alaskan woman has been found not guilty on all counts for the murder of her husband -- even though she shot him five times in the back while he was sleeping. You'd think that Lisa Donlon would be spending the rest of her life in prison, but instead she gets to walk free and reunite with her three children. Why? Because Donlon claimed she was being abused by her husband, who had held her captive in a remote cabin for days, while allegedly raping and torturing her by hanging her from the ceiling and beating her, because he had found out she'd kissed another woman.

"The defense argued that Lisa had no choice but to kill him in self-defense because he was continually threatening to kill her and her children and was holding her against her will."
(Mamas Latinas.com)

My dear old sometimes feisty Scots-Irish dad would probably have said, "Well, he needed killing."

I remember him telling of serving as a juror in a similar case where they cut the woman loose.

And received threats, indirect, I think, from the deceased's kinfolk.

10847. arkymalarky - 4/19/2013 1:17:23 AM

It makes you feel any better, nothing proposed would've prevented her from killing him in his sleep.

I don't want to believe what I am seeing on TV news this morning. The impression is of a major city being shut down in the aftermath of the Boston marathon bombing. Would-be anti-American terrorists the world over must be encouraged by their prospects for inflicting damage.

At least the MTA has been shut down. Maybe Charlie can get off now.

Boomantribune.com is running an interesting tic-tock of events in Boston this morning.

A sample:

NBC reporting (Pete Williams) that a third family member may be involved. Not sure who is his source for that statement other than generic "law enforcement."
