Setting aside the fiasco with Dr. Ford over the past few weeks, there are other reasons a Susan Collins or Jeff Flake could oppose Kavanaugh's nomination.

Kavanaugh lied about his yearbook and his drinking, according to people who knew him at the time. Maybe these are "small" lies from years ago, so they can be ignored.

Some who knew him years later in a professional capacity do not think he belongs on the SC.

What about those pesky Miranda memos? Weasel words seem to have gotten him out of that one. How about the mountain of emails, only some of which have been released, supposedly because of "national security"? Maybe more will come out in a few years, when it will be too late.

Kavanaugh tipped his hand with "What goes around, comes around." Pass the beer and the partisan chips. Should we be happy that at least we can see it coming?

One thing is certain, Kavanaugh has Trump's back. Welcome to the Imperial Presidency, where the rule of law applies to everyone except the President. I wonder why Susan Collins, Jeff Flake and Joe Manchin think that's a good idea.

“The Supreme Court must never, never be viewed as a partisan institution,” Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh observed at the start of his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

LOL!!

Partisanship is all there is, maybe all there ever was. The difference is now we see can see who the wizards are.

Joe Manchin thinks keeping himself in the Senate seat is more important than democracy. He wants to be re-elected, so he sacrificed the nation for the next 40 years to a whiney, entitled, partisan, who not only lies, but lies badly because it would never occur to him that anyone would question him to begin with. The sheer audacity!!!

Joe Manchin is going to get a lot of mail. So will Flake and Collins and Murkowski.

None of them voted for Kavanaugh because they thought he is fit to serve. They chose him because their party affiliations are more important to them than the American people.

It may turn out to be a good thing that red state Republicans have surged a bit in the polls. Democrats need to not become complacent about a blue wave taking care of things. We need to make sure people (especially young people) get out and vote. It is the only way out of the mess we are in. I took my 18 year old son to get registered to vote yesterday. My daughter is already registered. They and most of their friends will be voting.

Viva la Revolucion!

Looks like I'll be teaching the Pyramid of Hate this week.

Dirty, rotten, fuckers.

Yes, speech matters.

Hello you wonderful moties. Been staying off of here on purpose because I was too stressed about this election, so I've been working locally on registration get-out-the-vote Etc, and I've been helping my parents and traveling so I can see my grandson. But I am so relieved about the house. I hate that some races didn't go like I hoped they would but taking the house was the big thing and it happened and now I can sleep and move forward with my retired life.

47206. arkymalarky - 11/7/2018 8:52:51 AM

And dem numbers look good even in places they lost compared to what they have been, even in a lot of red districts, and some really cool people have been elected even in Kansas and Oklahoma. Makes me feel positive looking at 2020 instead of dreading it. And the Senate map for Den's is a lot better in 2020. Course Arkansas sucks rocks and I was expecting that, but they did raise the minimum wage

47207. arkymalarky - 11/7/2018 10:06:56 PM

Buckle up everybody. The cornered animal is in full Panic defense mode

47208. Ms. No - 11/9/2018 12:19:37 AM

Yeah, we're seeing evidence of that already.

As I said before, I hope people are quietly keeping every speck of evidence they can find. Verifying, re-verifying, and documenting. So long as Trump is in office, he'll be a martyr no matter how he's removed -- ditto his cronies and the members of Congress who back him. Once he's out of office? Once there are people of conscience with power again? Go after every single one of those treasonous assholes.

47209. Ms. No - 11/15/2018 10:52:00 PM

Whew!

RIP George HW Bush, 1924-2018

47211. winstonsmith - 12/4/2018 1:54:44 AM

My 2020 prediction for the Dem ticket:

O’Rourke/Harris or Harris/O’Rourke

47212. winstonsmith - 12/4/2018 1:57:00 AM

I didn’t like 41 when he was in office but he seems pretty awesome in comparison to Trump.

RIP H.W.

47213. Ms. No - 12/6/2018 8:29:35 PM

I don't think O'Rourke could win --- and the GOP would mobilize against Harris almost as fiercely as they did against Hillary.

I'd love to think maybe Booker could run, but I think the black-lash will still be strong enough that he couldn't get elected.

People I absolutely do NOT want to see run:

Warren
Sanders
Clinton (I still think she'd make an excellent president, but I don't think she can win at this point.)

Not wild about Biden, but wouldn't hate him. I think he's kind of bland and too timid for my tastes, plus, he's not as progressive as I'd like, but I don't know if we could elect a true progressive.

47214. winstonsmith - 12/7/2018 4:02:54 AM

I talk with my 18 year old kids about this and they like O’Rourke and Harris. They think Beto is barely progressive enough to satisfy Bernie/Warren supporters as well as being able to talk with people in small towns in Texas. They see him as Obama 2.0 in some ways. Harris they see as basically being ideologically similar to Clinton/Biden but more palatable because she’s younger and blacker. I don’t know if that pair could win the general election but I feel like they could do well in the he primary and would likely do better than someone like Warren in the general election

47215. Ms. No - 12/7/2018 6:42:29 PM

I agree on all points ---- it's not that I wouldn't love to see an O'Rourke/Harris Administration, I just don't know that we can get there in 2020. Biden probably has the strongest chance against any GOP contender simply because he's old and white and male enough not to offend the more moderate wing of the Republican party (aka Independents)

Which is sort of snotty of me to say. I do believe that there are true Independents, but in my experience, they are most often right-leaning except on some social issues. I have a hard time distinguishing between them and Libertarians generally.

47216. arkymalarky - 12/7/2018 7:54:51 PM

Great discussion. My pick as my personal favorite is Kamala Harris mainly because I want to see her shred Trump in the debates and reduce him to a puddling pile of Tears which is what will happen. I've watched her interrogate people in Congressional hearings and she's amazing. I just don't care for Cory Booker I think he's prone to Love the attention too much and I'm not sure what kind of policy ideas he would have and how effective he would be at getting things done.I tend to agree with Rachel Maddow about Amy Klobuchar. She could easily move to my favorite pick. I'm afraid Beto O'Rourke would not exhibit the kind of leadership and unflappable get it done that Obama had. The comparisons to a bomber app but more from the crowd standpoint from what I'm saying them from his management style which I didn't see it so I wonder about.

47217. arkymalarky - 12/7/2018 7:55:57 PM

Got tired of proofreading my own text. Comparisons to Obama AR apt

47218. arkymalarky - 12/7/2018 7:56:11 PM

are. dammit
