That looks so nice! But not really suitable for handbag and cell phone ...

10214. alistairConnor - 7/6/2004 9:30:29 PM

Well that's what I thought, but it can't be that...

Pelle, we saw an unusual sight this morning. In the past five years or so, the Harrier hawks have almost totally replaced the red-tailed hawks which favor this habitat. They have a habit of gathering in groups of twenty or so and circling around and around for some time with the circles gradually moving away. This has always occurred in August and September and it is presumed to be for the Southern migration.

Today, we saw about two groups with about twenty each, going through this performance over our house and heading south.

Ominous.

10217. Magoseph - 7/7/2004 2:14:55 AM

I have a message for you in International, Pelle.

Post 10218 was moved to Conflits in the Middle East.

Interesting discussion of measures. While the move to metrics has simplified things in many ways for me it's taken a lot of pleasure out of language.

Give a woman a centimetre, eh.

(and she'll take a megaparsec)

10222. Magoseph - 7/7/2004 9:32:55 PM

In the same vein, just give her an inch, she'll take a foot.

10223. Magoseph - 7/7/2004 9:53:44 PM

Not literally, of course.

Hello, Ali, say hello to me. I'm lonely in here. I can't get anyone to post anymore.

Let me ask you something--this weekend, during a conversation with my brother, I used the term "escagacer". He started laughing about that, I'm certain he still is. Tell me, have you ever heard that term? Is it that laughable?

10225. alistairConnor - 7/8/2004 9:39:00 PM

Never heard of it! Sounds like a regionalism to me.

10226. Magoseph - 7/8/2004 9:44:50 PM

It is definitely a Provençal one.

10227. alistairConnor - 7/8/2004 11:08:39 PM

Speaking of Provençalisms, we had a pétanque competition the other night. Our visiting New Zealand schoolgirls and their host families and hangers-on, quite a tribe. It went very well, and I'm not saying that because my team won...

(that only proves that the actual skill content of the competition was virtually nil)

Ali, I remember my father going every day to one of the local cafés (there were three in Laudun) to have “une partie de boules” as he called the game of petanque. He had one “pastis” (Pernod) before playing and one after, the most I ever saw him drinking.

10230. alistairConnor - 7/9/2004 12:06:37 AM

Something like that.

10231. judithathome - 7/9/2004 4:21:52 AM

Keoni bashed in the side of his new truck.

The new roof goes on Tuesday.

Our insurnace rates for home AND automobile will no doubt go way up shortly.

10232. Magoseph - 7/9/2004 5:22:40 AM

How did bash in the side of his truck, Juds? He's fine, I suppose?

10233. judithathome - 7/9/2004 6:07:43 AM

He made a too-short turn and crunched into a pole. Losing his side vision, I guess.

He is fine except for a bruised ego.
