The Founding Fathers on the Second Amendment

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."

George Mason
Co-author of the Second Amendment
during Virginia's Convention to Ratify the Constitution, 1788

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves …"

Richard Henry Lee
writing in Letters from the Federal Farmer to the Republic, Letter XVIII, May, 1788.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The people are not to be disarmed of their weapons. They are left in full posession of them."

Zachariah Johnson
Elliot's Debates, vol. 3 "The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adoption of the Federal Constitution."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the Press, or the rights of Conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms; …"

Samuel Adams
quoted in the Philadelphia Independent Gazetteer, August 20, 1789, "Propositions submitted to the Convention of this State"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Founding Fathers on Arms

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."

George Washington
First President of the United States

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand arms, like laws, discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as property. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside … Horrid mischief would ensue were the law-abiding deprived of the use of them."

Thomas Paine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them."

Richard Henry Lee

Rather more than "toys" I believe.

Well, I certainly wouldn't take anything away especially since the lead guy in that picture looks exactly like my son! I nearly fainted when I saw that picture. But sociopath is not the word I would apply, regardless.

And yes, he was a gun nut and owned about 30 guns...new AND antique. Also, to my great chagrin, he was a conservative.

But he kept them in gun safes and had them all registered AND checked out by law enforcement to make sure none of them were "hot" or had been involved in a crime.

And he didn't "pack heat" when he went out...trust me, he didn't look like anyone you'd want to mess with....

Ummmm....I was referring to post# 10732.

Rachel Maddow To Jon Stewart: Justice Scalia Is A ‘Troll Who Loves To Make People Mad’

Scroll down for the two-part video. The first one is real and funny, the second one is real and sobering as hell.

10738. judithathome - 3/1/2013 11:33:16 PM

I'm taping the show this afternoon on the re-run...we always watch it a day late.

I love Maddow...can't fault her accomplishments: Rhodes scholar, etc.

10739. Jenerator - 3/4/2013 6:55:37 PM

She's no Scalia. You may dislike his politics, but the man is truly a legal genius.

I can't stand Maddow - she and Maher make Cornell look bad.

10740. judithathome - 3/4/2013 7:55:00 PM

Thank god she's no Scalia.

Of course, she's not supposed to be...she's a news person and Bill Maher is an entertainer. They aren't writing opinions for the Supreme Court though I don't doubt they'd be a tad more thoughtful than Scalia.

So...if we're comparing apples to apples, who do you think does a better job than Rachel Maddow?

10741. Jenerator - 3/4/2013 8:49:01 PM

I'd say Laura Ingraham has every bit the impressive educuation that Maddow has and is less shrill.

When listening to a talk show host or political commentor, I want less outrage and more of an objective analysis.

Maddow has no respect for Scalia (he's a man and a conservative - two strikes) and it's no surprise. Though I think she would agree with many of his positions (reasonable search, etc.).

10742. Jenerator - 3/4/2013 8:49:53 PM

I agree with Mark levin's positions a lot of the time, but I cannot stand listening to him.

10743. arkymalarky - 3/4/2013 9:11:40 PM

Rachel Maddow is shrill? I must say that's the first time I've ever heard that criticism of her

10744. arkymalarky - 3/4/2013 9:13:08 PM

Ingraham is a Rhodes Scholar?

10745. judithathome - 3/4/2013 9:31:56 PM

Maddow earned a degree in public policy from Stanford in 1994. At graduation she was awarded the John Gardner Fellowship. She was also the recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship and began her postgraduate study in 1995 at Lincoln College, Oxford. This made her the first openly gay or lesbian American to win an international Rhodes scholarship. In 2001, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in politics from Oxford University. Her thesis is titled HIV/AIDS and Health Care Reform in British and American Prisons (supervisor: Dr Lucia Zedner).

10746. judithathome - 3/4/2013 9:32:39 PM

Ingraham earned a bachelor's degree at Dartmouth College in 1985 and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1991.

10747. Jenerator - 3/4/2013 9:41:55 PM

I'll copy and paste, too. This is absolutely a stellar education and work resume:

"Ingraham earned a bachelor's degree at Dartmouth College in 1985 and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1991. As a Dartmouth undergraduate, she was a staff member of the independent conservative newspaper, The Dartmouth Review. In her senior year, she was the newspaper's editor-in-chief,[3] its first female editor.[2]

...

In the late 1980s, Ingraham worked as a speechwriter in the Ronald Reagan administration for the Domestic Policy advisor. She also briefly served as editor of The Prospect, the magazine issued by Concerned Alumni of Princeton. After law school, in 1991, she served as a law clerk for Judge Ralph K. Winter, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in New York and subsequently clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. She then worked as an attorney at the New York-based law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.[8]"

10748. Jenerator - 3/4/2013 9:43:26 PM

So if we are to look at education and work experience, Ingraham is much more qualified for political commentary than Maddow.

But hey, Maddow is good for inflaming and polarizing.

I cannot stand her.

10749. judithathome - 3/4/2013 10:48:20 PM

Well, according to you, she's doing a good job. :-)

I cannot stand many of the people on FOX...they are polarizing and, in my opinion, ill-informed.

But we, as the public, are lucky in that we can make choices of where and from whom we can listen to and value opinions.

10750. thoughtful - 3/5/2013 4:34:22 PM

Maddow is terrific...smart, knowledgable, analytical and well spoken.

We need a new movement that will require both parties in Congress to take their jobs seriously...and that job is to serve the best interests of the country...it is not solely to get reelected.....

10751. alistairconnor - 3/5/2013 5:17:57 PM

You need a Five Stars Movement (Grillo and co). These people are the real shit. Jexster would love them.

10752. iiibbb - 3/6/2013 3:03:09 AM

I like Maddow.

10753. bhelpuri - 3/6/2013 2:10:49 PM

Chavez dies + the response is huge waves of idiocy from almost all camps. Though I'd doubted it in his lifetime, it does appear the undeniably big-hearted character has achieved tremendous symbolic potency which will far overshadow his real-life achievements/failures. This does in fact place him in the company of his idol Bolivar (who similarly failed, spectacularly, at almost everything he assayed).

A reasonable assessment (written before he died).
