Anomie,

Really truly (I'm not trying to convince myself or anyone else, I promise), kids are no problem. I love teaching and my job would be stress-free if that's all I did. Unfortunately it's only a fraction of what I do any more, and it gets worse every year. If I'm ever driven to murder it will be from State Department frustrations. Get Judith to sent you my web address, btw, and you'll see some of what I'm talking about. I have your addy somewhere, but I don't exactly remember where. ;-)

Mags,

Thanks! I did and I responded, because I'm particularly interested in what Ohio does since we have a contracted group studying school facilities for the state here, and from what I read the work they did in Ohio was not good. Our Ohio may be able to shed some more light on that. We talked about it a bit this summer.

BTW, did you all see my post that THERE WAS A COPPERHEAD IN OUR GARAGE?

I walk in there every day. It was small, too. I wouldn't have noticed it.

11032. judithathome - 8/19/2004 11:50:47 AM

Arky, I noticed! Gads, I'm so glad we didn't see any when we were there...Keoni grew up fearless of snakes because there are none in Hawaii so there is no telling what he would do with a snake around. He likes to hold them, can you believe it?

11033. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:03:02 PM

Sounds like our friend Louie from Detroit who suddenly grabbed a mushroom from under a tree one time and bit a big chunk out of it. Bob about had a heart attack. Luckily it didn't do anything to him.

We've seen way more than usual, I guess due to how wet it's been. That's the closest to the house, though. Ugh.

11034. angel-five - 8/19/2004 12:04:46 PM

Arky: All I can say is thank god it didn't get into your car. They like the inside of cars for some reason, I guess because it's a steadier temperature.

11035. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:08:36 PM

I've heard that. No more putting my car windows down in there. Of course now the neurotic in me will worry one's already stowed in there somewhere.

Bro did find a black widow in my car one time--on the visor. He and a friend had borrowed it.

I think I'd rather have the snake.

11036. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:11:05 PM

All that reminds me, I had one of the most stressful drives home on my commute I've had (been there 15 years or so, minus one). It didn't storm--no wind or hail--but the rain was unreal. I would have pulled over if there had been a shoulder anywhere. You remember that road, Judith? It really has no good place to pull over for most of the commute, though there are plenty of side roads I could have turned off on, I guess.

11037. angel-five - 8/19/2004 12:12:15 PM

You should be all right, seriously. They get under the seat and mostly stay there unless something agitates them.

11038. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:14:04 PM

You're just a real funny fella.

11039. angel-five - 8/19/2004 12:15:32 PM

You know I was totally bullshitting about them liking the inside of cars, right?

11040. Halo - 8/19/2004 12:17:16 PM

They are supposed to be more scared of you than you are of them. I guess snakes are unaware that they can kill you in 30 seconds or they wouldn't be so jittery.

11041. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:18:19 PM

No, actually I did think I'd heard that before, but I think it's radiators.

If I had sense in my phobias I'd be more scared just walking around. I have come very close to stepping on one before.

11042. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:20:40 PM

They are supposed to be more scared of you than you are of them.

The problem with snakes (aside from many of the harmless ones, it seems) is that they're so hard to see. People around here get snakebit from picking berries and clearing fence rows and stuff like that. But it's still very rare.

11043. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:23:39 PM

Well, I think it's bath and bedtime for me.

Can't imagine what my dreams are going to be like. Heh.

Catch y'all later!

11044. angel-five - 8/19/2004 12:24:19 PM

Arky -- Keep a pig in your garage.

11045. arkymalarky - 8/19/2004 12:26:08 PM

Hmmm. I already know where there's a pig in distress. I'll be like the old woman that swallowed the fly.

11046. Halo - 8/19/2004 12:26:17 PM

If it's so rare why is there are word just for it? There's no dogbit or horsebit (ok there is a horse bit but that's not the same and just confusing the issue).

11047. Magoseph - 8/19/2004 12:27:27 PM

Halo, welcome, when did you get here, today?

11048. Halo - 8/19/2004 12:28:44 PM

Today, a few days ago, last year, it's all relative.
