We're snowed in. It doesn't snow here very often, usually at most just once or twice a year. Consequently, the city is not geared up with equipment to deal with heavy snowfalls, and as it is very hilly when it does snow the whole place grinds to a standstill.

I've never seen it snow so persistently in the 30 odd years we've been living here. It hasn't stopped for more than a few minutes all day, and there's more forecast overnight and for the next couple of days.

Grand altogether Mago.

I got 17/20 for that smile test. Being the fool that I am, I usually find myself smiling with the genuine smilers, which is a pretty god acid test for me.

11134. Macnas - 8/22/2004 7:14:37 PM

"good"

11135. Magoseph - 8/22/2004 8:16:37 PM

I did also, Mac.

11136. judithathome - 8/22/2004 8:17:28 PM

Good morning...I'm up early!

11137. arkymalarky - 8/22/2004 10:04:24 PM

I'm about to leave for a dentist appointment. Hate to miss a day this early in the school year, but it's actually better than later and it's stuff I was getting done this summer that they couldn't quite finish before school started.

I'd rather be at work.

Y'all have a good day.

11138. PelleNilsson - 8/23/2004 12:33:38 AM

Snowowl

Reminds me of Amman, also a hilly place, where it snowed two or three times a year. When it started to snow, the thing was to get home asap otherwise you would get stuck among inept drivers driving cars with blank tires.

I hope you're stocked with the essentials (gin, tonic, crisps, etc) or can get them within walking distance.

11139. robertjayb - 8/23/2004 1:01:58 AM

inept drivers driving cars with blank tires.

blank tires=bald tires

another nugget for my store of mostly useless information...

and a reminder to start pricing new tires...

11140. PelleNilsson - 8/23/2004 1:25:57 AM

Sorry about the Swedicism. They tend to creep in.

FAKE SMILE

11142. SnowOwl - 8/23/2004 5:45:45 AM

Second day of snow. I went for a walk yesterday and saw plenty of inept drivers who'd attempted to get up the hills and had to abandon the attempt. One coming downhill almost collected me as he totally lost control of his car and slid across the road into a lamp-post.

I wanted to stock up with the essentials Pelle suggested but when I got to the shops I found most of them had closed early. Alas, no chips, so I had to double up on th gin instead.

11143. anomie - 8/23/2004 6:25:30 AM

Enough of that and you'll never miss the chips.

Just thinking of snow makes me feel cooler in contrast to the endless heat and humidy of the southeast. I look forward to October.

11144. anomie - 8/23/2004 6:31:53 AM

Judith,

My machine wouldn't play your test, and I couldn't download and install the flash program. I think my laptop is about to self destruct. I should really go computer shopping.

11145. anomie - 8/23/2004 6:33:10 AM

Pelle said "crisps". SnowOwl said "chips".

Is it chips in NZ?

11146. SnowOwl - 8/23/2004 6:42:55 AM

Yes, chips in NZ, although just to confuse the issue, what you call French fries are also chips down here.

I've been trying to persuade my daughter to come outside and make snowmen and have a snowball fight but she thinks I've totally lost my mind. It's hard having a snowball fight by myself.

My family have no sense of fun whatsoever.

11147. anomie - 8/23/2004 7:37:28 AM

This may call for more gin, for the daughter.

I'd play!

11148. anomie - 8/23/2004 7:39:53 AM

Or, perhaps a good French red.

11149. neato - 8/23/2004 7:50:18 AM

Well, SnowOwl, here across the ditch it will be a lovely 21C (a bit over 70 in Farenheit I guess) - the weather has just started to warm up.

11150. SnowOwl - 8/23/2004 8:59:34 AM

Come on down, anomie, and we'll toss snowballs and build snowmen then sit around a roaring fire drinking buckets of punch - or mulled wine.

neato - I'm still working on my plan to move in with our son and his wife. They take possession of their house tomorrow but don't actually move in until Monday. We're thinking of arriving there before them and setting up as squatters, but unfortunately the airport is closed so I can't see any way of getting across the ditch other than by rowing.

11151. neato - 8/23/2004 5:25:48 PM

SnowOwl, shame about the airport, but better to arrive a bit later when they have settled in and made it comfortable, deck chairs and ice buckets unpacked, mosquito nets in place, air conditioning going etc
