Good morning. Hey, Joods, have you fallen out of bed?

11153. judithathome - 8/23/2004 9:17:34 PM

Almost...after getting stung three times yesterday morning while Klaus and I were out in the front yard, I took some Benadryl and slept til noon. Was still groggy last night and went to bed rather early. So I am up and ready to go this morning.

I sent a letter to the editor of our paper yesterday and he called me right after...it's in the paper today. It's about the new format they've stuck us with...our paper now looks like USA Today.

Judith, I think you'll get a kick out of this.

11155. judithathome - 8/23/2004 9:51:19 PM

I certainly DID! That was effin' fantastic. Was it Eric Idle?

11156. Macnas - 8/23/2004 9:52:11 PM

Indeed, who the fuck else?

How to ruin a television program...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Alan Alda, the Emmy-winning star of the '70s comedy-drama series "M.A.S.H.," will guest star on 10 episodes of the upcoming season of "The West Wing." Alda will play a Republican senator with presidential aspirations, Alda's agent, Toni Howard, told The Associated Press.

11158. judithathome - 8/24/2004 4:20:14 AM

God. Keoni is going to scream when he hears that. Ten episodes of a Republican...as if they hadn't already ruined it.

11159. prolph - 8/24/2004 8:48:25 AM

Thanks for the song; perhapps we could found a choir.

11160. angel-five - 8/24/2004 8:55:14 AM

West Wing died when Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme left it.

11161. anomie - 8/24/2004 9:05:15 AM

I could never watch it. The phoney, perpetual fast walking through the halls was distracting.

11162. Magoseph - 8/24/2004 9:24:29 AM

Ano, are you watching Six Feet Under?

11163. anomie - 8/24/2004 7:07:59 PM

No. Isn't that on Showtime?

I like the real-life show on A&E about the funeral directors - Family Plot.

11164. Magoseph - 8/24/2004 7:17:27 PM

No, it's on HBO. I have to look up Family Plot. I just started to watch Rescue Me on A&E.

Anyway, how's the weather down there?

11165. PelleNilsson - 8/24/2004 9:01:16 PM

Not that anyone is interested but I have suspended my post-graduate studies until further notice. The re-orientation of the institution from 18-19th century economic history to 20th century social history finally became too much. It felt like a duty to attend the seminars and that's not my idea of fun. Our recent Baltic trip stirred my interest in the development of the European city and I recalled that another institution gives a master course in "European urbanization" so that's where I'm going to spend the next two terms.

11166. wonkers2 - 8/24/2004 10:05:56 PM

I'm getting tired of the pathetic characters in "Six Feet Under." There isn't one that I would like to associate with or have as a friend. A bunch of losers.

11167. Magoseph - 8/24/2004 11:38:10 PM

Only one or two episodes to go, Wonk, but I understand why you feel this way.

11168. Ms. No - 8/24/2004 11:52:11 PM

Pelle,

I'm sorry your original course of study disappointed but congratulations on discovering a new interest (or alternate, since it's not a new thing for you). Sounds like there might be plenty of opportunity for fun travel in future to study. You and the Missus can just keep bags packed!

11169. PelleNilsson - 8/25/2004 12:04:45 AM

Thank you, Ms No, but there is nothing to be sorry about, really. As I'm sure you understand, it was a vanity project anyhow. And who knows, the trend may reverse again. It is one of the peculiarities of the old Swedish universities that once you are accepted into a program you stay accepted for life.

(Stockholm university is not that old, 1880s, but in this context it is).

11170. marjoribanks - 8/25/2004 12:59:48 AM

I admire people - like you Pelle - who make somewhat formal study a lifelong habit. I always considereed myself to be one such person, but I really haven't studied anything with even a modicum of rigorousness since I entered my 30's.

Pak Hashke, of course, was one such marvel. I remember attestations from the Snodgrasses that he had somehow pretty much mastered Bahasa Indonesian after deciding to start study just a couple of years earlier.

I have plans. My knowledge of what is strictly speaking my mother tongue (maje mai bhas) is pretty ragged (to be polite). If things work out on the lines I posted about in the Escapes thread, I intend on rectifying this completely. There is a wonderful institute with the odd name of Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendra (TS was a Jesuit who published the first Western-style grammar of any Asian language, way back in the early 17th century), and I have already contacted them about registration.

I do wonder if I can pull off real language acquisition at this stage - I have the desire but have never enjoyed classroom language study . But we shall see, we shall see.

11171. Jenerator - 8/25/2004 1:14:46 AM

I think it's great, Pelle. I hope you enjoy the new direction.

Marjori,

You're so smart, I bet you pick up a new language quicker than you planned on.

I am also going back to school and changing directions. I'm bummed that I have to get a second master's degree and that I will probably be in school for another 7 years, but it'll be 7 years of studying what I love.

I remember watching a television show about older students and a woman was featured who went to medical school at age 50. She said, "I'll be 60 by the time I finish my speciality, but I'd rather be 60 and pursuing what I love than 60 doing what I am now. Either why I'll be 60, so why not accomplish my dreams."
