11193. Ms. No - 8/26/2004 12:59:15 AM

When I had DSL I loved it. I've never used cable or satellite at home so I can't offer any advice about either of those.

Currently I'm not online at home at all. I've been putting it off because I have PC repairs to make and other things have been more important to attend to, but my brain is percolating in other ways in the evenings now and it would be nice if my computer worked.

I want to get a flat screen. The monitor I've got right now is as big as my television set. What a space-waster.

MsNo, it's just a little typical cafe/diner from the outside. What is special about it is the cook...he's aspiring to become a chef in a fancy place and he always does the "special" in really creative ways. He once made a salmon dish that would rival anything in a 4 star place.

Naturally, they do chicken-fried everything really well, too. And desserts are all made on site, not bought wholesale.

It's a fun little "local" oddity.

We've two roofs done and two more to be worked on next week and then I'm leaving.

11196. anomie - 8/26/2004 6:56:16 AM

Jay,

VOIP - ia that an internet phone service? I hadn't thought about it, but maybe. I have a cell phone I use even when I'm at home. So the home phone line is just wasting 25 bucks.

11197. anomie - 8/26/2004 6:57:41 AM

Judth, Enjoy your play. Will we get a review? Maybe a dinner and show review.

11198. anomie - 8/26/2004 6:58:54 AM

Mago, You in the roofing business?

11199. Magoseph - 8/26/2004 7:17:17 AM

No, Ano, I am not. There was much damage this winter on the roofs--snowstorms, tornadoes, and squirrels. This place is a constant pain to me. I was just being perverse talking about leaving.

My space bar is sticking down and I have to hit it so that it works. Why is that, I wonder.

11200. arkymalarky - 8/26/2004 7:56:19 AM

I was so pissed when I got home. Our electricity had been shut off, and here it is the hottest day of the summer. It's back on now (obviously). I evidently forgot my July bill after we got back from vacation, and I always pay my monthly bills the third week of the month, when we get paid. I pay them at once so I won't forget them--except when I go on vacation, apparently.

11201. judithathome - 8/26/2004 8:00:22 AM

Mags, sometimes crumbs mysteriously accumulate in the keyboard. No one knows how it happens but it can cause keys to stick.

11202. anomie - 8/26/2004 8:13:14 AM

Sorry to hear that, Arky.
I was miffed when I got my first water bill here. It was about $5, but it had a $15 dollar late fee cause I left in on my desk for a week when I went away.

Mago, I understand. And yes, it sounds like your keyboard needs cleaning. Maybe you can pop the spacebar off and clean it out.

11203. Magoseph - 8/26/2004 8:40:21 AM

11204. Magoseph - 8/26/2004 8:47:24 AM

Ano, Juds, the keyboard is sparkling clean now and the space bar is still acting up. I think it's the humidity in the air. It's been hot, hot, heavy hot. I'll put the air on tomorrow.

Here isthe wayitlooks when Idon't correct my typing.

11205. Magoseph - 8/26/2004 8:49:47 AM

I found the above graphic I don't know where now. Do you like it?

11206. anomie - 8/26/2004 9:29:50 AM

I like it. Is it a fractile?

11207. Macnas - 8/26/2004 3:47:58 PM

Fractal, some people use them as screen savers, lord help us.

VOIP = voice over IP, where your handset is assigned an IP number and acts as a device on a data network, like any PC. It makes for a very efficient system, especially when moving from office to office, as taking your number with you is simple.
It has just occurred to me that Pelle is the qualified person to answer that query.

11208. PelleNilsson - 8/26/2004 5:43:47 PM

There are may providers of VoIP and also many service levels. What you need to do, anomie, if you intend to scrap your ordinary telephony subscription is to make sure that your VoIP service allows you to call and receive calls to/from all other phones in the world. If you don't prefer to sit with a headset in front of the PC you should also ensure that you can hook your current phone(s) into the cable modem.

I'm fairly sure that VoIP will be cheaper than using the cellphone.

11209. anomie - 8/26/2004 5:52:39 PM

Macnas, Pelle, Thanks for the VOIP info, and the spelling.

I've also heard of another onling phone service called Vonage. I'll check them out.

My cell phone is covered by the job and is good anywhere in the U.S. I have a card for the few international calls I make.

11210. anomie - 8/26/2004 5:54:07 PM

Neato and I are finding wierd links in our posts over in Childhood, and I'm getting pop-ups at the Mote homepage. Anyone know what's up with this?

11211. neato - 8/26/2004 6:10:58 PM

I'M not finding them!

11212. anomie - 8/26/2004 6:39:09 PM

Sorry, Neato. I assumed everyone could see them. Perhaps it's just me. And the links go to a slide projector shopping place. Very strange.
