I found a beautiful and old wingback chair sitting outside next to a trashcan on my street in June. I am assuming that the owner had placed it outside and thought that someone would pick it up, but it rained before anyone got it. In fact, it rained for two weeks straight.

When I saw the chair, I immediately went to pick it up, but it smelled pretty mildewy. I have since aired it out and taken out the cushion innards.

An antique buyer friend of mine says it's from the Civil War era!!

Nice one.

Mags,

Thanks for asking. I'm okay. Don't think I'll ever call it home here, but I'm okay. Can you believe I've been here six months already? More later. Gotta hit the shower.

I just learnt that my last surviving relative in my parent's generation, my paternal aunt Vera, passed away. She was 96, a feisty old lady, a spinster, a communist and an agitator like her father the stevedore. In her heydays wich strechted well into the 70s she was a quite well-known left-wing profile in her native Gothenburg. I last met her three years ago. Then she was her usual self, sharp of mind and indulging in her vices: cigarettes and sherry. We were never close but she was fun lady to meet with.

Get the chair re-upholstered and it'll last another 150 years. Most of our furniture is re-upholstered garage sale acquisitions (which have long since been shredded by our beloved cat, Sparky).

Ano,

Yes, the red is gorgeous, but I'm laughing because I've been seriously considering green for the front rooms. If you ever visit I'll have to blindfold you and feed you Quiche.

Six months??? Already? Wow. It seems like maybe 6 weeks.

Pelle,

What a wonderful relation to have! I'm sorry you'll miss her now, but how priveleged you are to have known such an interesting person.

11460. Jenerator - 9/23/2004 10:30:25 PM

I love red, but don't have the proper room for it.

Our living room stuffs are in cherry wood, tapestry colors and sage/mushroom.

The master bedroom is in "toast" becaase of the beige jaquard bet set.

My son's room is done in vintage Cowboys and Indians with this color on the lower portion of the walls:

The kitchen is done in 50's colors...aqua with chrome and red accessories.

11461. Magoseph - 9/23/2004 11:13:45 PM

Tell me, Pelle, were the last three years relatively easy on your aunt? If one lives that long and still has a sharp mind at 93, one should fade gentle into the night. Did she?

11462. arkymalarky - 9/23/2004 11:56:19 PM

Wow, Pelle, what a life your aunt must've led!

Jen,

The kitchen sounds cool. I'm trying to visually put together aqua and red, though.

11463. Ms. No - 9/24/2004 12:06:02 AM

Oooh, very 50's. Cool color combo!

11464. Ulgine Barrows - 9/24/2004 6:05:48 AM

I wouldn't want the buttons so much, as the stories behind them and why the buttons were saved.

Sold the suit my son can't fit in, for 20 bucks to a resale shop.

11465. Ulgine Barrows - 9/24/2004 6:08:59 AM

11456. PelleNilsson

Oh my, sorry to hear that about your aunt.
You'll have to carry the candle forward, now.

11466. SnowOwl - 9/24/2004 6:12:29 AM

It sounds as though your aunt was a fascinating person to know, Pelle.

11467. Ulgine Barrows - 9/24/2004 6:15:23 AM

11445.
Heh. Ms. No, you make me remember the good parts about moving, which would be learning the new space, and delighting in it.

wabbit take note

11468. Ulgine Barrows - 9/24/2004 6:42:00 AM

SnowOwl! We had our first day of autumn here.... are any bold and hardy flowers starting to peep up, your way?

11469. SnowOwl - 9/24/2004 8:03:51 AM

Most of the Spring flowers are finished now, Ulgine. We've had a very unsettled season so far though - more snow than usual and snow later than usual, followed this week by howling gales.

I'm looking forward to a bit of warm weather so I can get outside in the garden.

11470. Ulgine Barrows - 9/24/2004 8:08:15 AM

What will you do in the garden?

11471. Macnas - 9/24/2004 8:11:50 AM

Cold snap here, nice and brisk this morning.

11472. Macnas - 9/24/2004 8:17:00 AM

Pelle

Sad to hear about your aunt, would that we all live as long and as well.

She sounds rather like my Grandmother, another sharp in-her-nineties red. Talking to her is like being able to open the door to the past.
