j@h, schwarzbein has a lot to say on heart disease and diet. The latest thinking is that a balance of all fats is important including the omega 3s...like flax and fish...as well as the omega 6 and 9 including saturated fat. Schwarzbein contends that if you don't eat cholesterol, your body will make it. Problem is the mechanism to shut down cholesterol making is a poor one and therefore it will overdo even on a low fat diet. Explains why so many people on an atkins type diet don't have more cholesterol problems than people on really low fat diets, or why people on low fat diets still can't get their cholesterol down and thus the flood of statin drugs. (Not that I'm recommending atkins at all.) In fact the studies linking heart disease with cholesterol are very poor indeed.

Also explains why the french, for example, suffer less heart disease than americans even though they eat rich foods.

Rather insulin is a major factor, as it leads to inflammation in the body and a build up of abdominal fat and the whole 'syndrome X' thing they're all talking about now. So one of the keys to reducing heart disease is to reduce the insulin rush by controlling the number of carbs eaten and making sure all meals and snacks are balanced. E.g., it's healthier to eat an apple with a hunk of cheese vs. just an apple as together they provide a balanced snack and reduce insulin rush, vs. the apple alone which is very high sugar and causes the insulin rush.

Just some food for thought, if you will.

That looks quite a bit like our native Virginia Creeper. Do you know what the vine is?

We have some growing onto our deck that the birds visit now for the berries.

I never eat carbs without balancing them with protein. And I don't as a rule indulge in hollow calories.

Also take Omega 3 and flaxseed oil capsules daily.

11824. ronski - 10/28/2004 8:11:45 PM

thoughtful,

You are very knowledgeable about insulin, carbs, cholesterol, etc., and I agree with you.

I mean all these things are subject to future, better studies, but you have it right about where things are heading on this subject.

11825. thoughtful - 10/28/2004 8:16:18 PM

There are various components of omega 3, some of which is only in fish oils, not in flax seed oil. Had this long discussion with my naturopath on that one, as I avoid the fish oils due to my thyroid problems. Just wanted to mention it though.

Also, just heard about another contributing factor to heart disease...subclinical hypothyroidism. Seems to be a lot of women have undetected low thyroid function which leads to issues like chronic fatigue, low energy levels, achiness, and now even heart disease.

Being a sufferer of graves disease, i tend to be hyper aware of thyroid issues.

11826. thoughtful - 10/28/2004 8:21:55 PM

Yeah, ronski, it's way too simple, and that's the problem. The best recommendation in the world is still the same old same old. Nothing new, nothing fancy.

Eat a balanced diet.
Avoid sweets and empty calories.
Eat your vegetables.
Eat real food and avoid artificial ingredients and processed foods.
Watch your portions.
Drink lots of water.
Exercise regularly.

Problem is no one is going to make any money offering up that sound, age-old advice. Not docs, not big pharma, not the publishing houses. Too little cache, too much sensibility, no magic.

11827. judithathome - 10/28/2004 8:37:29 PM

Yes, the doctor mentioned that I should have my thyroid tested and I'm going to do that in two months at the same time I have my cholesterol checked again. He said it is good now but he'd like me to try and get my LDL down about 10 more points. I think I can do that in two months, even with Greek housguests who love to cook and the holidays approaching. ;-)

Alistair may know what the vine is, Ronski.

11829. Magoseph - 10/28/2004 8:41:37 PM

Look at this one, Ronski

11830. Magoseph - 10/28/2004 8:48:23 PM

This is very interesting, thoughtful. I would like to read more about what Schwarzbein has to say if I could obtain other references. Does this man have a site?

11831. Magoseph - 10/28/2004 8:50:15 PM

I never heard anyone say that there's little or no relationship between cholesterol and heart disease.

11832. ronski - 10/28/2004 8:57:21 PM

It is Virginia Creeper, which I've just learned is native to Europe and was introduced to North America via Canada.

11833. thoughtful - 10/28/2004 9:04:45 PM

Magos, check out this:

Conclusions

The commonly-held belief that the best diet for the prevention of coronary heart disease is a low saturated fat, low cholesterol is not supported by the available evidence from clinical trials. In the primary prevention, such diets do not reduce the risk of myocardial infarction or coronary or all cause mortality. Cost-benefit analyses of the extensive primary prevention programmes, which are at present vigorously supported by Governments, Health Departments and health educationalists, are urgently required.

Similarly, diets focused exclusively on reduction of saturated fats and cholesterol are relatively ineffective for secondary prevention and should be abandoned. There may be other effective diets for secondary prevention of coronary heart disease but these are not yet sufficiently well defined or adequately tested. The circumstantial evidence of benefit from oils, particularly olive oil, vegetables, fruit and fish is strong.

For those at high risk, drug therapy, with the statins provides effective primary and secondary prevention and should be considered, with or without a diet, in the same way as drug treatment for mild or moderate hypertension.

Also, check out this study and comment. Dr. Willett is fairly well known nutritionist who has written a revised food pyramid which includes more fats in the diet, though still very high in carbos IMO.

11835. PelleNilsson - 10/28/2004 9:13:48 PM

Should we retire the Health thread, then?

11836. thoughtful - 10/28/2004 9:15:42 PM

You can also check out what Schwarzbein (she) has to say about metabolic aging. Her program includes 5 steps:

good nutrition
stress management
exercise
avoiding toxins and artificial chemicals
hormone replacement therapy if needed

Her books are available from amazon for only about $10.

She is into avoiding bad fats, but those she defines as transfatty acids...the hydrogenated stuff.

11837. thoughtful - 10/28/2004 9:21:06 PM

Ah, Pelle, I just knew you'd step in, upset about this topic taking place in a thread other than health. So glad you didn't disappoint me. You really need to get yourself some metamucil.

Can't the conversation at least in the cafe flow where it will as it would in a real cafe??????

Now can it, mister! No one appointed you boyscout leader. Magos asked the question and this is her thread. If she feels it's inappropriate, she is free to say so.

You successfully chased me out of the childhood thread because I dared to post a slightly off topic post about children there and I haven't posted there since.

I refuse to let you chase me out of the cafe!

BLLLLFFFFPPPPHHHTTTT!

11838. Magoseph - 10/28/2004 9:34:51 PM

Thank you, thoughtful. I'm going to listen to her radio programs now and I'll order her books. I really appreciate your help.

11839. Magoseph - 10/28/2004 9:37:06 PM

Flexy's carotid ultrasound shows that there is a stenosis and narrowing of the carotid artery. We are working on lowering his cholesterol and blood pressure now so that he can undergo surgery.

11840. thoughtful - 10/28/2004 9:39:14 PM

Any time, magos.
