Maybe too late to wish you a safe trip, Won, but check with us when you come back.

I recently redid my room...inspired by the swedish design...sort of. Well swedish colors with lots of white and blue. The room was a solid blue color inspired by a room at the wadsworth. But i didn't want to redo the entire thing so i added a wallpaper border of beige and gold and light blue wild flowers with a background that looked like swirled white clouds against the blue sky...not puffy clouds, but like a mostly cloudy sky with peeks of blue. Then I swirled white paint on the upper half similar to the wall paper border. The top edge was awful tho so i painted the ceiling white down a quarter inch onto the wall and bordered the break between the swirled and the white with auto pinstriping in gold...looks terrific. Rearranged the furniture to eliminate a bunch, added a gold brocade bedspread with gold box pleated dust ruffle in a coordinating embossed stripe. I made 'cloud' shades out of an open weave fabric in a very subtle white and a soft yellow stripe which provides privacy when down yet lets the light in. When up, they gather thickly almost like an austrian shade. Finishing touches include pillows on the bed and a flower arrangement i put together that almost matches the flowers in the border.

such fun!

I am so sick of work, I have to go home.

Great work you did, thoughtful. Were the 'cloud' shades difficult to make?

12165. Magoseph - 11/20/2004 12:01:28 AM

Nice border, thoughtful. What do you have for the floor?

close-up on cloud shade and not clear in the pic but an idea of the car pinstriping near the ceiling

was the cloud shade hard to do? well, it depends on if you've sewn before or not and your tolerance for doing 'crafty' things. I've sewn and done crafts most of my life, so i have a high tolerance for tedium.

the actual sewing isn't hard as you are fundamentally just hemming a large square on all sides. top hem is a type of pleater tape with threads running through it. you sew it on the fabric flat and then pull the strings to create the pencil pleats which are then evenly spaced and stapled to the board which supports the shade. The shade operates like a roman shade with the string running down the backside through rings sewn at fixed intervals to the back of the shade. When drawn up, it creates the puffy bottom you see there. When lowered, the shade entirely covers the window with some gathers still drawn up at the bottom, so it's still puffy, but not so full.

the tedium really comes in with sewing all those rings by hand...108 as i recall. then stringing the strings is also a bit of a pain, but well worth the results in my book.

Thoughtful, charming and restful to the eyes, very nice work on the shades--thanks for posting the pictures.

vases are souvenirs...the portmeirion by the bed is from our trip to england and the one on the desk is from our trip to mexico. I love putting reminders of places we've been around the house to enjoy.

thanks magos, I enjoy doing rooms, and am sure, given the bedding you posted and your description, that yours will be just terrific.

12173. Magoseph - 11/20/2004 12:36:50 AM

I'm going to try, but I doubt that I'll post pictures of it. I don't have a camera. My sons provide me with pictures usually.

Thouhgtful! Great job on the bedroom. And I love that you have teddys on the bed!

That is an impressive job on the shade and the flowers in the vase match the border perfectly. I recall the den, or study, that you did a few years ago, wit burgandies and greens. You definitely have a knack for decorating.

We have used various things in our house that we've collected over the years in our travels and our hunts at estate sales and malls. Things that people have given us, too. Some people think my house is like a museum and it is, really...a museum of a life.

very pretty bedroom. I get way too much dust in my house for that kind of thing, though, for some reason. Maybe I leave the windows open too much, but all that fru-fru stuff doesn't work worth a damn for me. I have to have easily cleanable surfaces. Everything has to be dustable and/or washable.

12176. judithathome - 11/20/2004 4:19:20 AM

Well, everything in any room is dustable or washable in some form or another.

But I know what you meant. ;-)

Beautiful, Thoughtful!

12178. sakonige - 11/20/2004 5:18:11 AM

I don't know why, but I get swamped with dust. I can't believe other people have to spend as much time dusting as I do or the world would be a lot freer of nic-nacs and draperies.
