I could do a good job of doing just that, thoughtful. We will be going to a Thai restaurant tomorrow, right here in town. The natives will not be anywhere to be seen, entertaining at home, or being out of town--an ideal time to eat in peace with no one coming over and trying to engage Flexy in conversation.

I like everything that goes into a traditional Thanksgiving meal except the sweet potatoes and the cornbread.

Pelle ack!!! the sweet potatoes are delish! and the corn bread is yum. I can see why someone might not take a liking to rutabagas, but sweet potatoes????

Our traditional tgiving dinner was roast turkey of course with bread stuffing and gravy. mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, carrots and green peas, cranberry sauce, mother's pumpkin chiffon pie with real whipped cream for dessert which is still a favorite pie of mine, and grandma always made creamed onions. grandma would come around with serving bowl in one hand spoon in the other and look for a 'victim'. Alan always got stuck eating them. Years later he confessed that he actually liked them!

You are of course aware that the rutabaga variant of the turnip is the one also known as Swedes. It is part of the very traditional Swedish kitchen from pre-potato times. Frankly speaking I don't like rutabagas either. There is the same sickly sweet taste.

Oh, I love rutabagas for the holidays...mash them with butter and nutmeg...never eat them any other time of year though...and much better tasting to me than turnips.

Is it that you don't like sweets in general? Or just not sweet vegetables? How are you on beets?

This is going to be the first Thanksgiving dinner since my mother passed away. Every year I've been alive my mother has hosted a big Thanksgiving dinner at home, with 25 to 35 people showing up each time. The one exception was when she rented out the Legion hall for it (I believe we had some 40 people that time). Usually all family, although the occasional friend shows up. Our family is very close knit and my mom was the premier organizer of these sorts of things; it's impossible to think about Thanksgiving family dinner without thinking immediately of her.

It's just my dad at home now and while he offered the use of the house and kitchen to do Thanksgiving this time, he's not up to doing the whole shebang. We're driving out there tonight but Thanksgiving will be held at a private restaurant in Cambridge Springs that we're renting out. That's a first, but probably the best option. It's sure to be a bittersweet holiday, but more sweet than bitter.

I hope everyone has a good day tomorrow, especially your dad, A-5. Last Thanksgiving was the first holiday meal we had with an empty place, since Bob's dad had died in mid-September, but it wasn't as painful as we feared it would be--too many little ones (7 great-grandkids under 4) make it impossible to be very down for very long.

I have no rational explanation for my dislike. There is something in the combination of taste, colour and texture that turns me off. I'm fine with beets. And the traditional Swedish kitchen is somewhat sweetish, for example the prune-stuffed rack of pork I'm contemplating for the weekend.

They're similar to me. I like everything at "traditional" Thanksgiving meals I've ever had except fruitcake and mincemeat pie. And I don't hate them, they're just not my favorite.

there are certain foods which render common 'yucks' among people such as fish and liver, but i'd never put yams in that category.

arky, i'm with you on the mincemeat and fruitcake. i think with fruitcake it's more of an intellectual thing. I see fruitcake and can't help but ask, why?

I love sweet potatoes. I oftentimes just have one for dinner. I bought some Nigerian yams that were the size of my thighs once - they tasted less sweet than I expected.

My mom had knee surgery today and I am taking care of her, so neither one of us is cooking for Thanksgiving. I went to Central Market thinking I would pick up some tasty goodies quickly. The place was absolutely packed.

apparently growing in popularity is hitting the local restaurants for a tgiving dinner 'to go'. We've done it in the past and have gotten delish dinners with only a quick zap in the microwave.

Jen, you are much braver than I, going there the day before a holiday. We're getting a prepared turkey from there for the gang's Tgiving on Saturday but I'm sending the guys to pick it up!
