And the traditional Swedish kitchen is somewhat sweetish, for example the prune-stuffed rack of pork I'm contemplating for the weekend.

sweetish/swedish/schmedish.

Is that the world-famous Sweden sour pork?

I also hate sweet potatoes and cornbread. I don't mind Swede (rutabaga) in a vegetable soup or to crunch on raw, but I coiuldn't eat it any other way.

I've got very firm likes and dislikes. The thought of maple syrup eaten with bacon and eggs makes me heave. Sweet things are for dessert in my opinion.

Funny you should mention it, Judith, but I did make a Galette today although we won't eat it tonight. It's chili and cornbread tonight. Meat pie will likely end up as breakfast tomorrow.

Sweet potatoes from the can, mixed with pineapple from the can topped with marshmallows from whenever she originally bought the super-gigantor-sized bag (possibly when Eisenhower was in the White House) does NOT constitute a good sweet potato experience.

I like sweet potatoes sliced thin and baked with seasoned salt on them. That's pretty much the only way I like them.

arky, i'm with you on the mincemeat and fruitcake. i think with fruitcake it's more of an intellectual thing. I see fruitcake and can't help but ask, why?

I think it's a traditional thing. I've seen a lot of Americans say they hate fruitcake and mincemeat but I love them both. Christmas Cake is always fruitcake down here - and so is wedding cake. And mincemeat pies are fabulous.

I have made 5 Christmas cakes this year, and they've been mellowing nicely being fed each week with brandy, sherry, or rum. It's very hard to resist the temptation to cut a piece off, just to try, but so far I've been strong!

Well, when I told my daughter my plans to make her favorite grilled salmon for Thanksgiving, she vehemently protested.

So, I'm going to go buy some turkey. Not a whole turkey, after all there are only the two of us. If I can't find a couple of turkey breasts, I'll go with Louis Rich pre-cooked breat of turkey.

12284. Jenerator - 11/25/2004 4:23:50 AM

Christi,

Here's a good recipe for turkey cutlets.

12285. Magoseph - 11/25/2004 10:32:27 AM

Where are Ali, Ulgine, and Mac when I need them to talk to me?

12286. alistairconnor - 11/25/2004 12:43:24 PM

Busy but here Mago!

Unburden yourself.

12287. Magoseph - 11/25/2004 1:15:41 PM

Ali, I needed more to follow your bantering about with Ulgine than talking with you two, actually--but thanks for asking. though.

12288. Magoseph - 11/25/2004 1:31:22 PM

Less four degrees Celsius here now--snow coming later, so they say. Oh, boy, that will take care of the Thai food for me today! I think that I will have to put my snow-suit on when I take my morning walk as soon there is light.

12289. Macnas - 11/25/2004 2:13:49 PM

What is a snow suit? Is it a padded puffy affair?

12290. Magoseph - 11/25/2004 4:41:00 PM

Yes, usually one piece with a hood attached--my snowsuit is black satin quilted, not puffy, sharp-looking. I put it on for my walk earlier, but had to come back and just put my usual attire. The snow suit is really for temperature around 0 degree Fahrenheit.

12291. Macnas - 11/25/2004 4:48:25 PM

I thought as much Mago, I could not imagine you out and about in anything less than elegant.

12292. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 11/25/2004 4:55:13 PM

Think tropical . . .

Laura's SMOKED TURKEY FREEDOM FOWL*

12294. Magoseph - 11/25/2004 5:11:19 PM

Thank you, Mac, I try to look well-dressed and well-groomed, that's true--rather a lifelong foible of my part, I admit.

Whiz, you made me jump out of my seat.

12295. christipeters - 11/25/2004 6:11:14 PM

Jen - heh. Turkey breast cutlets is what I ended up buying. The night before Thanksgiving is a bad time to shop for Thanksgiving dinner. My choices were whole turkey, turkey legs, turkey wings, or turkey breast cutlets.

12296. wonkers2 - 11/26/2004 12:18:48 AM

To rinse or not to rinse (the turkey), that is the question. (We rinsed.)

12297. wonkers2 - 11/26/2004 12:31:55 AM

w2, the missus, the Capn'n and our lawyer son had a nice dinner in Jexter's neck of the woods on Sunday at a place appropriately called "Chow." Very good soup and salmon cakes.

12298. Magoseph - 11/26/2004 4:18:33 PM

How y’all doin’ this mornin'? Are you still stuffed to the gills? Will you be eating leftovers today? Will some of you fight the throngs at the mall? I'm staying right here. I have: The Da Vinci Code, a Thai Salmon Shu Shi dish, and no one home until this afternoon.
