Okay, it was 55F in the house this morning when I got out of bed, but it's warm IN the bed so that contributes to my laziness about sealing the windows and calling the gas company to inspect the heater to make sure I can run it.

Grrrr. I just don't want to go buy rolls of plastic and seal up the windows. There's really nothing else to do though with the draughts.

12458. thoughtful - 12/2/2004 6:51:31 PM

brrrr!

That would be lots more than enough incentive to turn the heat on.

I take it you don't have storm windows...

12459. Ms. No - 12/2/2004 8:14:49 PM

I don't know that there are any houses in Los Angeles that have storm windows. We don't have storms.

The place I'm in now has these old sash windows with metal framing so they're heavy and unbalanced and don't fit tight, hence the lousy insulation.

Strangely, the house didn't seem all that chilly to me last night but I know it was colder last night than the night before. Maybe I was just up and about more.

It's supposed to get down to about 38F tonight and honestly, this is pretty damn cold for this time of year in LA. Hell that's pretty damn cold for LA, period.

William Safire keeps you au courant with contemporary collage slang.
Flossing in a filthy, pimped-up whip

I thought the CA coast was battered with storms all winter long which drives incredible waves on shore and such, no?

I guess it's supposed to be warm tho.

You might try covering the windows with some fabric if you didn't want to do the plastic sheeting. In the northeast they even make what they call 'window quilts' that are like insulated shades. They also make long tubes filled with stuffing to block the air coming in from under the doors.

12462. thoughtful - 12/2/2004 10:16:05 PM

This one's too cutsey but you get the idea

12463. thoughtful - 12/2/2004 10:17:21 PM

window quilt:

12464. thoughtful - 12/2/2004 10:18:30 PM

easiest thing tho is turn up the heat.

12465. Ms. No - 12/2/2004 10:32:05 PM

I'll weigh the cost of window treatments against the cost of future heating bills and see which comes out best.

I've seen those door-pets before, almost got a snake one for my old place --- it was the least offensive of the offerings. The new place's doors are pretty tight, it's just the windows that rattle.

12466. Jenerator - 12/3/2004 12:19:33 AM

SnowOwl,

I had no idea that it was so cold where you lived.

We have bad windows and bad insulation. We would save a fortune if we got everything fixed.

12467. judithathome - 12/3/2004 12:41:09 AM

I can highly recommend the windows we got as replacements for my dad's 1950s windows and the storm windows he had installed in the 80s. We paid a fortune for these but they were very much worth it. They are double hung and can cleaned from the inside. That's one thing I have...clean windows year 'round!

12468. judithathome - 12/3/2004 1:12:46 AM

Hey, it was one year ago today that I broke my leg.

I celebrated by going out and doing all my shopping for gifts!

12469. arkymalarky - 12/3/2004 2:24:41 AM

Hard to believe a year has alredy gone by since then. This semester has flown by too, and I can't believe the year's almost half over. Not that I'm complaining about that.

12470. arkymalarky - 12/3/2004 2:25:03 AM

The school year, that is.

12471. christipeters - 12/3/2004 7:56:36 AM

Oh! I loved visiting with Klaus!

You and Keoni were nice too, Judith

12320. wonkers2, how interesting about the Dylan thing. I'd like to see the Gehry building, too.
I saw an old TV interview featuring a very young Dylan. Just a few weeks ago for me, perhaps 40 ago for Dylan.
He was saying something like, "There is a certain sort of person who reads Time magazine" and I can't quote it exactly, but I winced internally because I never thought I'd grow up to read Time. That Dylan kid barely had whiskers on his face and he came out of the TV at me - wonderful.

I'm going to put mulch on my banana tree tomorrow. That is more important than cleaning carpet stains, don't you think? Those people we had for Thanksgiving? I'm still cleaning up after the piglets.

My mother-in-law was purring all through dinner, all through dessert. She has been very sick, so it was cozy.

That *ist camera didn't show up in time for the happy crowd, so I bought a cute little Panasonic Lumix, instead.

12473. SnowOwl - 12/3/2004 10:57:49 AM

Jen,

It's not really that cold. The problem is that in my part of the country there's very often little to differentiate between summer and winter. It is much warmer further north in the country.

12474. Dubai Vol - 12/3/2004 2:16:47 PM

At least you have the option of turning on the heat. I Dubai they just don;t even install heating, which is stupid if you know anything about heat pumps. SO in winter everybody has to buy thos little space heaters. Of course you only use them a few days, this morning it was 75 degrees at dawn. And I swear to you, a couple more derees and gas station attendants will break out the leather jackets and furry hats with ear flaps. Brr, it's 70 degrees! Meanwhile the Germans are on the beach getting a tan on the lounge chairs they put their towels on at 6AM....

12475. PelleNilsson - 12/3/2004 4:51:55 PM

Hahaha! Yes, I recall that in Beirut, when the temperature crept down to 65 or so, the wives of the noveaux riche took the opportunity to put on their mink coats.

12476. wonkers2 - 12/3/2004 5:20:20 PM

Ulgine, 40 years ago Time Magazine, edited by Henry Luce, was considerably more right wing than it is today. In the presidential election campaign between Eisenhower and Stevenson, Time published a picture of Adlai picking his nose alongside a picture of an attractive, smiling Ike.
