25!

And now I think I'll go make a grilled cheese sandwich and see what appears.

Oh, nychtophobia. That one I knew. I was thinking of the disequilibrium one or something and there was another in the last 5-8 I think that I'd never encountered before but I managed to spell correctly.

Wabbit,

Obviously we were born to rule. Is that a link to the NPR segment on the grilled cheese sandwich cookbook they were talking about yesterday?

12525. Ms. No - 12/6/2004 10:30:31 PM

AC,

Yes, song titles from Southern Rock Bands. Free Bird is Lynard Skynard and Whipping Post was the Allman Brothers. Simple Man is Skynard.

Of course I have no idea if I was playing correctly, I just chimed in because I knew the tunes.

12526. Ms. No - 12/6/2004 10:31:16 PM

All I can think is that I'm glad privelege wasn't on the list. I never spell it right.

12527. judithathome - 12/6/2004 10:38:28 PM

MsNo have you ever heard of Ken's Japanese Restaurant in Rancho Cucamonga?

12528. iiibbb - 12/6/2004 11:00:00 PM

"Freebird" is IMHO the greatest rock song ever.

Props also goes to "I can't get no satisfaction", "Stairway to Heaven", "Purple Haze", "Louie Louie", "Great Balls of Fire", "Every Breath You Take", "Johnny B Goode"...

Well... I could make a list but Freebird isn't even on their top 100, and that's just wrong.

12529. iiibbb - 12/6/2004 11:01:04 PM

Here's their list.

12530. alistairConnor - 12/6/2004 11:24:28 PM

Thought it was the allman bros -- but are you sure about freebird? thought it was older than that

12531. wonkers2 - 12/7/2004 12:01:22 AM

24. I still don't get the one involving 11s or 11s's or 11ses.

12532. wabbit - 12/7/2004 12:15:23 AM

iiibbb's link: Rolling Stone's list.

12533. judithathome - 12/7/2004 12:31:50 AM

The elevenses is early...or late?... tea or something, in England.

12534. thoughtful - 12/7/2004 12:33:26 AM

from wikipedia:

In the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, elevenses are a meal that is similar to afternoon tea, but eaten in the morning. It is generally less savoury than brunch, and could consist of some cake or bread and a cup of tea. In Australia, it is called morning tea (often little lunch or play lunch in primary school). The name refers to the time of day that it is taken: around 11 am.

In fiction, Winnie the Pooh preferred honey on bread with condensed milk, while in Middle-earth it is a meal eaten by Hobbits, who treat it as a full meal and not a snack.

12535. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 12/7/2004 12:51:45 AM

I thought it had something to with a game of jax . . . nineses, tenses, elevenses . . . I win!

12536. Ms. No - 12/7/2004 12:58:00 AM

AC,

I believe Freebird was an original tune by Skynard. Whipping Post is likely an older blues tune that the Allman Bros. popularized --- as they did with Stormy Monday Blues.

12537. Ms. No - 12/7/2004 1:07:58 AM

iiibbb,

yeah, Freebird and even Sweet Home Alabama are way too far down the list --- especially if they're going to include every major hit that Elivs had and then songs that nobody ever heard of. And what's with Waterloo Sunset being in the top 100? I love that song but as far as it's significance it's still farther down the line than Freebird.

Honestly, I think it's a bit of prejudice against Southern Rock. My father recently recommended a book to me written by a long-time Rolling Stone author called Dixie Lullaby and it looks specifically at Southern Rock and what it meant and what the contributions were and how so many in the industry --- notably the author --- kind of shunned it because it was for rednecks and hillbillies rather than California hippies.

I may not be able to wait for him to send it to me. I just might have to pick up a copy for myself.

12538. arkymalarky - 12/7/2004 1:15:54 AM

3i3b,

Haha! I read Wonk's post and didn't put the two together, but when Bro and I had a band in college we played that and your post reminded me of those days, because no matter what great song (not necessarily great rendition, mind you) we played, people always hollered "FREEBIRD!" which, if I say so myself, Bro was wicked on with the guitar.

Thankfully we didn't last long enough for me to grow to despise it.

12539. arkymalarky - 12/7/2004 1:17:03 AM

Mags,

Thanks. I really appreciate that. I'm pretty stressed until I get done with that paper and finals next week, but after it's done I hope to chill somewhat before the legislative session starts up in mid-January.

12540. Ms. No - 12/7/2004 1:17:34 AM

And what is with this shit that Carole King has got one tune on the whole list or that R. Kelly is on there but nothing by Styx?

Bad, bad list. Wonder how it was compiled.
