Good luck, Concerned. Tis time for me to sleep now.

12714. concerned - 12/15/2004 10:02:38 AM

They have not conceded anything except verbally.

12715. iiibbb - 12/15/2004 4:32:30 PM

Then they have conceded nothing.

How's your resume?

12716. iiibbb - 12/15/2004 4:35:10 PM

Diplomacy - the art of letting other people have your way.

The key is to not take the low road... don't give them an excuse.

Is your company large enough for an ombudsman?

12717. wonkers2 - 12/15/2004 5:00:56 PM

Based on my experience in private industry, federal and state government, don't expect a lot of help from the Human Resources Department. Also, the employee who takes on his boss in a direct confrontation usually loses. There is a lot to be said for patience, depending on the situation--size of the organization, opportunities for lateral moves or promotions out from under the asshole boss.

12718. concerned - 12/15/2004 5:28:05 PM

Hi -

iiibbb-

I'm not familiar with this ombudsman concept but I imagine where work is large enough with a total of 4500 employees (It's an extension of the DoE). Can you elaborate some?

wonkers -

I was already looking into a lateral move but am afraid that this review may be negative enough to poison that - if this new guy doesn't want me around, why make it tough for me to leave? I don't understand that.

The review essentially admits that I successfully accomplished (most of) my assigned tasks & some extra credit, but is still very negative because it blames me because technicians don't like the kind of work I've had to give them (which was assigned to me in the first place by said management), and as I mentioned, it gets some important technical stuff all wrong, some of which I've pointed out to them already.

12719. concerned - 12/15/2004 6:07:59 PM

My job description contributes to the situation I find myself in, I think, since it splits my duties up into two completely separate areas - not only do I not have full time resources for either area, but they are disparate enough in both requirements and technical ability that communicating my activities from either one to the other is difficult and apt to spark either resentment or disdain, depending on which direction the flow - one is fairly high tech electronic design - the other basic relays & switches safety system implementation and support.

Add to that that I submitted a superior safety system proposal that was turned down due to seniority and political reasons but that many admit is preferable (the system that was chosen is the one I 'unofficially' made contributions to), & it's 'Retaliation Time'.

So, whaddya think?

12720. alistairconnor - 12/15/2004 6:08:23 PM

Actually I'm having a spot of bother myself with my hierarchy...

The guy I report to is a technician, like me, not a manager. We like each other well enough, but our technical domains don't overlap, so he has not much of an idea of the work I do, can't really help me to set objectives, etc... I'm on my own. This wouldn't be a major problem in itself, but I'm not very good at providing a paper trail, so he has nothing much to feed his superiors in my respect. They are breathing fire and threatening to not renew my contract.

It isn't an actual problem, I can fabricate the required level of reporting easily enough. It's just tedious, and will detract from my effectiveness in dealing with the considerable, and stimulating, technical workload.

12721. iiibbb - 12/15/2004 6:09:44 PM

An ombudsman is an impartial arbitrator. If you go through channels and can't get a satisfying result, ombudsmen are supposed to smooth things over. I've only worked at one place that's ever had one... and the only thing they ever said is that you have to go through normal channels before tapping them.

12722. wonkers2 - 12/15/2004 6:34:31 PM

Concerned, one other question--is he a Democrat? Is he familiar with your political inclinations? I spent most of my career with a car company as a closet Democrat. Even so, I was under suspicion as a result of opinions I occasionally expressed on various issues!

12723. wonkers2 - 12/15/2004 6:35:15 PM

If your boss is a Dem, maybe you should consider leaving the dark side!

12724. concerned - 12/15/2004 10:02:53 PM

Re. 12722 -

Believe it or not, at work, I've been fairly apolitical. I did mention to one other employee (not in my department) that I voted for GWB, but I've also been somewhat critical of the Iraq War at work. Maybe that's my problem - not wearing my patriotism on my sleeve enough?

12725. Max Macks - 12/15/2004 10:03:37 PM

Good morning , or good noon.
It's high noon where I am.

Just thought I would lurk in and
mention that Oz of Random Int'l.

gave The Mote a nice plug in my forum
that I have in World Crossing.

12726. Magoseph - 12/15/2004 10:10:31 PM

A very interesting conversation, concerned dear, thank you. I hope that you continue it.

Ali, I have a picture for you in The Good Life.

I have received a Christmas package from my brother and his wife-this time, papillotes, a fougasse, and a foulard en cachemire.

12727. wonkers2 - 12/15/2004 10:15:00 PM

From my experience in Michigan and DC, my impression is most government employees are Democrats with a few moderate Republicans.

12728. judithathome - 12/15/2004 10:23:02 PM

Well, damn..I'm getting a cold and I have tickets to a play tomorrow night.

12729. thoughtful - 12/15/2004 10:52:24 PM

take cold-eeze...it has zinc in it and is known to significantly reduce the severity and length of colds...a real immune-system booster.

suck one lozenge every 2hrs. Not all zinc lozenges are known to help as they have other ingredients which counteract the zinc activity....cold-eeze has studies backing up its efficacy.

12730. alistairConnor - 12/15/2004 10:55:35 PM

A fougasse indeed! That was daring.

I hope it was still in working order. (i.e. edible)

12731. Max Macks - 12/15/2004 10:55:49 PM

Those Swiss cough drops

dont have the name in front of me , are also
good..Riccola or something like that...
What play do yo have have tickets for Judith.

12732. alistairConnor - 12/15/2004 10:56:35 PM

Just a bit of amateur philology -- I would be very surprised if "fougasse" wasn't closely related to "foccacio".
