wonkers ,
I usually don't post that I live in Berkeley,
because of the stale jokes about Bezerkley..

I too have interest in the etymology of
words, but I am afraid my forum WERDZ
is quite shallow , which you will see if you visit. That said, I hope you will take a peek.
By the way , I have been disapointed what with all
the stuff that is on the Internet that I have yet
to find a good online etymological dictionary.

I didn't know that Jexter lived in SF.
Where do you live wonkers.?

12789. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 4:02:20 AM

Detroit, actually a small suburb north of Motown.

12790. Max Macks - 12/19/2004 4:03:36 AM

Oh, I just remember that when I came to The Mote
more often a year or so ago I went to the folder
in which language is a part.
There was someone ( name forgotten) who lives
or did then in Java(?) who was quite a linguist
and answered my questions about some words.

12791. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 4:04:21 AM

I like Berkeley, but Point Richmond is my favorite place that has any housing I could remotely afford.

12792. Max Macks - 12/19/2004 4:12:24 AM

I just checked the atlas, and find it was Bali
that that man lives or lived in.

Yes Point Richmond is a very interesting place.

As Talulla Bankhead alledgedly once said,
"I've been rich; I've been poor . Rich is better!"
Me too , but now I am poor and live in an apartment.
And keep myself from thinking of when I could have
bought a house . Acutally could have bought several
for what one costs now.

I was born in Minnesota , went to the U of Iowa
in Iowa City and also school in Wisconsin,Minnesota
and Illinois.
Have moved quite often. Detroit is among the few
big cities I have never been in.

12793. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 4:15:55 AM

Detroit is nicer than most people realize although it's been in tough shape since the late 70s when the flood of import cars began to hurt. I like to think there are fewer phonies (people, that is) here than in many other parts of the country.

12794. Max Macks - 12/19/2004 4:22:35 AM

I think what you say about fewer phonies
is true in many states in the Midwest.
Tho after the last election there maybe fewer
"phonies", but there sure are a lot of dummies.
in the "heartland"
Just my opinion.! LOL

Last week there was a table of the votes cast
in Berkeley, Over 90% for Kerry and it said
this was the highest percentage of any city over
100,000.
Perhaps I should not be so open about my
political opinions before I refresh my knowledge
of those of other Moties.

12795. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 5:14:17 AM

You're in the majority here!

12796. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 5:14:50 AM

About the same as in Berkeley.

12797. robertjayb - 12/19/2004 7:52:11 AM

Max Macks,

There was someone ( name forgotten) who lives
or did then in Java(?) who was quite a linguist
and answered my questions about some words.

That would have been Irving Snodgrass. The last mention I recall placed him in Canada.

12798. PsychProf - 12/19/2004 4:04:03 PM

Max...that was Irv Snodgrass, and I beleive it was Jakarta. He is fine, working for his PHD in Linguistics.

12799. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 5:38:26 PM

BTW, Irv's mother taught two of my kids in grade school. (Quite a good teacher.) Small world.

12800. PelleNilsson - 12/19/2004 6:26:48 PM

Irv lived in Denpasar, Bali.

12801. judithathome - 12/19/2004 6:58:53 PM

He moved there from Jakarta, though, right? I seem to recall him telling a wonderful, scary story about that move.

12802. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 7:02:15 PM

Where is he now?

12803. judithathome - 12/19/2004 7:02:53 PM

In Canada.

12804. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 7:12:26 PM

With his Indonesian wife? Or did they split?

12805. Magoseph - 12/19/2004 7:19:48 PM

I think that they split, Won.

12806. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 7:23:55 PM

Too bad. Or, hopefully, for the best.

12807. wonkers2 - 12/19/2004 7:27:05 PM

I have a lot yet to do for the holidays. Three children coming home starting Wednesday. Need to get tree, wrap presents, do Christmas cards, have surgery on my face and ear on Tuesday (removal of two small skin cancers.)and here I am procrastinating on the Mote. Just like cleaning my room during exam week in college!
