Judith

a military base in Maine.?!

13118. Magoseph - 1/7/2005 11:51:12 PM

I believe the golf club's rationale is that if they let the local kids cross-country the course, how are they going to stop others from doing so? I don't think the residents here would appreciate their privacy being invaded by skiers anyway.

13119. judithathome - 1/7/2005 11:54:46 PM

Yes, Max...Loring. It was in the northern-most tip of Maine, seven miles from the Canadian border.

I'm sure some of you are on PsychProf's mailing list and received this today but for those who didn't:

Here are some US statistics for 1904:

The average life expectancy in the US was 47 years.

Only 14% of the homes in the US had a bathtub. Only 8% of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost $11.00

There were only 8,000 cars in the US, and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.

Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.

The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year. A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year. A mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home. Ninety % of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." The five leading causes of death in the US were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhoea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect
guardian of health."

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two of 10 US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6% of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Eighteen percent of households in the US had at least one full-time servant or domestic. There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire US.

13122. Magoseph - 1/8/2005 12:34:10 AM

230 reported murders? Well, with a 1904 population of 82,166,000, they must have had quite a few unreported ones.

13123. Dubai Vol - 1/8/2005 1:02:52 AM

Two of 10 US adults couldn't read or write.

I'd be surprised if that figure weren't higher today

13124. Max Macks - 1/8/2005 3:59:58 AM

I read that 100 years ago before somewhere

very interesting

Judith one of the most interesting places I have
seen , was crossing from Maine into New Brunswick
and seeing the Bay of Funday

at St. Johns or St.John ( I hear there
are two towns with that name , one with and one
with the "s" on the end)

13125. wonkers2 - 1/8/2005 5:44:35 AM

KKK lynchings weren't included in the murder statistics.

13126. Magoseph - 1/8/2005 4:53:26 PM

Hello, hello, what are you doing to do today?

13127. wonkers2 - 1/9/2005 12:49:38 AM

Shovelling snow, among other things!

13128. Magoseph - 1/9/2005 1:58:52 PM

Hello, Won and everyone--Let's see if I can attract some visitors today--I found this quiz at ATI.

Are You Addicted to the Internet?

13129. iiibbb - 1/9/2005 10:10:03 PM

70's toys

13130. iiibbb - 1/9/2005 10:12:57 PM

I am addicted... but not according to that test.

13131. arkymalarky - 1/10/2005 1:29:34 AM

I was an average user, which I figured. I did say most of my friends are online, because between here and the people I work with on education issues, who are definitely friends, that's where most of my friends come from. I don't socialize much irl, though I have friends. Too tired.

I've been editing this weekend. Hope to be finished by next week.

13132. Macnas - 1/10/2005 10:22:36 AM

Yarrgghh!

Those toys....causing...recollection...overload!

Well, truth be told, not really, but I do remember the advertising quite well. Some one of my sisters, can't remember which, got a gift of a "Simon" device from an aunt for the babysitting she used to do. The single most annoying and addictive thing ever foisted on the public at that time.

13133. Magoseph - 1/10/2005 10:52:27 AM

Hello, Mac, did you have problems where you are with the storm Friday or Saturday?

13134. Macnas - 1/10/2005 11:00:25 AM

Hello Mago.

No problems, other than being house-bound yesterday. It is after easing off now, but some parts lost power for a while. Other than that, just much rain and very high winds.

13135. PelleNilsson - 1/10/2005 11:11:13 AM

The southern third of Sweden was badly hit. 400,000 households without power, roofs coming off houses, no train traffic south of Stockholm, seven dead in various storm-related accidents. In addition four nuclear reactors had to close down because of salt accumulation on the transmission gear. Luckily it was Sunday so the national network could still sustain the load.

13136. Macnas - 1/10/2005 11:35:56 AM

That bad? Jaysus, we got off lightly then.
