I deleted post # 13466 because it was redundant--Sorry.

Storm Expected to Dump Snow Across U.S.

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: January 21, 2005

A snowstorm moving Friday from Canada into the Great Lakes drew weather warnings from North Dakota to New Jersey and the Long Island Sound, with some areas bracing for a foot of snow or more.

Bring in the pets and protect tender vegetation, especially your earlobes.

All you snow-bound folks stay safe. We usually have a good snow every few years. About once a year it's ice, and when it's bad, it's really bad. Our biggest snow kept us out of school for several days, but we never lost power. The biggest ice storm we did for almost 2 weeks, and it was a nightmare.

13471. arkymalarky - 1/22/2005 1:56:47 AM

My stupid late tags ticket was $150. Ridiculous. I'm going to court to try to get it reduced or rescinded. The trooper suggested I do that. The lady at the Revenue office suggested that he could have just not given me the ticket.

13472. RickNelson - 1/22/2005 2:40:23 AM

I like snow storms a lot better than ice storms. I hope all around you are safe arky?

Those late tag tickets are stupid. That fine seems larger than what tags cost? A warning seems sufficeint and if the gov. has to establish a fine a smallish one would suffice. Expired tags should not be a source of revenue. Speeding, illegal parking, reckless driving and such sure, but some of the inane things like tags are over the top.

I hope your fight works arky. I know it's a mixed bag. One thing about Minnesota is that if you do go after the ticket's legitimacy, the writing officer must show in court or you automatically win. Also if the officer shows up to fight something other than what your actually fighting against then you win too. So, it may be worth trying just for the odds of winning by default.

But, if you lose, I don't know if they add some court cost or not? That would be a real downer.

Snow, snow everywhere is snow...

I've used the snowblower once already to keep it at blower depth. It's supposed to snow most of the evening and night and it's already snowed since 10-ish am today.

I don't know why anyone wants this kind of snow. I might enjoy it a little with a snowmobile, skis or snowshoes, but none of those are available to me. So, I'm with the crowd who would rather just go snowless most of the winter.

I'm glad this is our first real snow in the Minneapolis Metro area this season.

13474. arkymalarky - 1/22/2005 4:41:23 AM

Thanks Rick, we're all doing well. Glad to hear how well your son is! Loved the poem about him.

WRT the ticket, I won't challenge it, just ask for it to be reduced or removed since I rectified the situation. The cop suggested I do it and it won't cost me anything, so it's worth a shot, as the lady at the county sheriff's office told me.

13475. arkymalarky - 1/22/2005 4:42:34 AM

I could use a snow day or two off from work, but I don't really want bad weather.

13476. Ronski - 1/22/2005 6:54:41 AM

Rick,

No X-C skis? I used to X-C ski in the West Village in NYC on quiet, snowy nights.

(Now I'm in the far exurbs, and a few minutes from a small downhill ski area.)

We just hit zero F.

Blizzard (as officially defined) tomorrow, here, and in NYC, with more snow to the south than up around me.

13477. alistairConnor - 1/22/2005 1:57:02 PM

Rain, rain, rain. Stream's rising. The last of the snow has been washed away.

I love snow -- I grew up in a snow-free climate, and here we rarely have it for more than a few days at a time, so I don't have time to get sick of it.

It helps that our tiny, country municipality is well-equipped to deal with it. I've missed a very few days of work through snow, over the years.

13478. Magoseph - 1/22/2005 3:25:30 PM

I measure 11 inches of snow on the front steps that are facing west. Only 6 inches were predicted. I did not go to the street in order to check more carefully because I solemnly promised my husband that I would not. He believes that by now the previous snow is solid ice.

13479. PsychProf - 1/22/2005 4:11:26 PM

New England's turn next.

13480. Ronski - 1/22/2005 5:21:31 PM

After predicting that the snow might stay to the south, or be heaviest in eastern Long Island, they are now saying it will be heaviest NW of the city across into Conn. (in other words including us), 18-22 inches, 35 mph wind, gusts to 50 or 60, and lightning and thunder. We were at zero all night on the thermometer right outside a glass door, which usually runs a bit warm because of heat from the house. The weather report said it was 2 below; 20 below at my brother's in Vermont.

Of course, none of this is really surprising, except in the context of the strings of mild winters we had a various points in the last two decades.

Last night I bought stew meat, which felt appropriate as we sit through the storm tonight with the fire roaring.

(I just hope we don't lose power!)

13481. PsychProf - 1/22/2005 8:30:15 PM

Ronski...the map of accumulation I just viewed(TV) indicated south and east as heaviest. Perhaps you will catch a break.

13482. angel-five - 1/22/2005 10:09:16 PM

Well, I don't know about up there, but down here these fucksticks can't figure out what the hell the weather is going to do. Just last hour they were saying the heavy snow would start at Andrews around 3 PM for about four hours. Now? The radar shows the snow leaving the area right about then.

I mean, I'm talking about an hour ago. How do you miss that?

I know meteorology is a very difficult field but still. They were saying 8 to 10 inches. Now they're saying less than three. In an hour they'll be saying eight to ten again and it will have stopped snowing. This town is completely paralyzed whenever it starts to snow at all. We were going to go get some sushi and they just closed the place because of the weather report, which is of course, as the astute reader will gather, why I am pissed.

As Woden often says, "If I were the boss, things would change around here."

13483. angel-five - 1/22/2005 10:09:59 PM

Personally I think weathermen should be forced to wear shock collars.

13484. wonkers2 - 1/22/2005 11:04:03 PM

I agree. I wonder which one invented the "wind chill index."
The great plains would never have been settled if the populace had been subjected to modern weather forecasts. "Snow days" are another relatively recent innovation that we could easily do without.

13485. PelleNilsson - 1/22/2005 11:04:36 PM

On the other hand real men don't eat sushi.

13486. wonkers2 - 1/22/2005 11:05:45 PM

Snow days teach the kids the wrong lesson--when it snows, roll over and go back to sleep. That message translates to absenteeism in the workplace.
