So I had a fun weekend. Some of you may know I am an amateur race car driver... Now that I am more gainfully employed I can afford to indulge my hobby a bit more. I went to a 2-day driving school this weekend and had a total blast. We had 4 instructors who have all held national championships at some time or another. It was cool to have some of the stuff I do with a car validated... and especially cool to have some of my bad-habits pointed out to me. I even overheard one of the instructors saying to another that I had some "good instincts".

Can't wait for my next race.

Wow, that sounds like fun. You've got some neat hobbies, at least to read about. Don't know that I'd have the guts to try them.

Well... don't get too excited about the "race car" stuff. It is literally the lowest form of sanctioned racing in the US and you use your own car... and it's not wheel to wheel... it's time-trial type stuff. However, it's not too many steps up from where I am to the stuff you might see on TV sometimes.

It's fun though. I got into it sort-of as an accident (bad pun). A friend spent an entire week trying to get me to enter one... and I didn't want to, but I went to watch him race and ass soon as I saw it I thought to myself "I must do this..."

It's called "autocrossing". It's more about car-control than speed. There are clubs all over the US that do these and sanctioned by the sports car club of america. They set up a course of cones on a small track, very large parking lot, or even out of thee way regional airport runways. The cones are set up as gates, slaloms, etc... many types of maneuvers. Every course is different, and they make them up that morning. You get 4 chances to get the best time that you can on a course you've never driven before. When you knock a cone over our out of it's 'box' they add 2 seconds to your time. Cars are classed so you are competing against people in cars similar to yours. You see every kind of car there... every thing from 2 door econoboxes to exotics. It's a lot of fun... it's basically safe... and it's actually not that bad for your car (bad for your tires though). I would recommend it to anyone.

I always wanted to do that. Used to drag race in high school.

14470. iiibbb - 4/5/2005 4:05:56 AM

What's stopping you? Detroit must be a great place to try it.

14471. Macnas - 4/5/2005 10:32:40 AM

alistair, I know you're a bit of a fan, and 'though I don't know what your con-speed is like, you might like to look at this.

Ooo lovely. Haven't got any speakers here, but I will have a listen from home... probly cut a MP3 cd.

Mac, Woden posted this blog somewhere--I can't remember where now, but I'd like to know if the man strikes you as being a real Irishman.

iiibbb, while reading your story, I held my breath until I came upon this:...it's basically safe... --then I re-read it and enjoyed it very much.

14475. Macnas - 4/5/2005 12:47:45 PM

Mago

Eh, I don't know really, he might be for all I know (or care) and he might not be. I suppose the question arises: what makes somebody really Irish.

For that matter, do I strike you as being a real Irishman? I might be a Latvian upholsterer living in Botswana....

14476. Magoseph - 4/5/2005 1:19:47 PM

Yes, you do, and I might be a defrocked nun who fled Algeria.

14477. Macnas - 4/5/2005 1:38:15 PM

I still think you should write a book.

14478. Magoseph - 4/5/2005 1:40:23 PM

I forgot to thank you for looking at the blog and Flexy thanks you for this: Say hello to Flexy for me and tell him I don't blame him for wanting you all to himself. When I showed him what you wrote, he said with a satisfied smile, tell him Hello and Thanks.

I still think you should write a book.

Mac, why do you think that?

14479. Jenerator - 4/5/2005 2:29:02 PM

Arky,

I WISH they had been pecs. He needed a trainer bra, and the odd thing was, he was slender.

14480. wonkers2 - 4/5/2005 4:54:11 PM

Maybe he had good abs?

14481. wonkers2 - 4/5/2005 4:55:19 PM

Cap'n Dirty sez, "Or a schwantz like The Cap'n."

14482. Magoseph - 4/5/2005 4:56:30 PM

Maybe he had a super brain?

14483. alistairconnor - 4/5/2005 4:57:47 PM

Hey, and I thought big tits and a shy smile would get you anywhere...

14484. alistairconnor - 4/5/2005 4:59:56 PM

About your book, Mago :

I think Webfeet's onto it. You should write a novel, with elements freely adapted from your life and times. From the fragments I know, it could be quite an epic.

14485. Magoseph - 4/5/2005 5:18:30 PM

Now, you’re starting to talk like my brother, my husband, my sons, and Mac—if only I had the gift of writing well, I could be tempted, I suppose.

I wonder if all of you guys arent' just putting me on...
