Yes, Pelle, that's exactly what "over the hill" means. What it doesn't mean (and what my friend was trying to express) is being through with the hardest part of some ordeal, like getting over an illness. That's "over the hump" in English.

15924. PelleNilsson - 7/22/2005 6:48:13 PM

Aha. I have missed you Linnea. I hope you will avoid work some more.

15925. Max Macks - 7/22/2005 7:43:28 PM

I used to be able to communicate rather well in German

Trouble is that Spanish would be more useful to me now. Where I hear Spanish every day
and German hardl ever.

But I have often wondered what I actually sounded like
to a German

One seldom thinks of accents as causing problem
only grammer or wrong word .

but I remember once when I took my car to have
glass replaced and the man kept saying
about something that

"it's only kos'-ma-tech"... until I realized
(accent on kos), until I realized he was saying
cosmetic.

There are still words that I never use if I can help it—such words as SHEET and TEETH, for example, because they are bound to distort for many people the meaning of what I want to say.

Pelle, is it your birthday? Happy Birthday, you sweet curmudgeon, you!

15928. anomie - 7/23/2005 9:32:12 PM

Ah yes...Happy Birthday and thanks for all the memories...as someone once said.

Great pics from Pelle in Escapes.

15929. anomie - 7/23/2005 9:42:50 PM

And a big hello, Judith. So rare to find someone on when I am. Hi also to Arky if she's here.

I am enjoying the food and sweet tea here in South Carolina, and the people I work with are tremendous. Makes doing time easy enough. One more year....God save me from this humidity...

15930. judithathome - 7/23/2005 9:48:06 PM

You'll probably miss some of that humidity when you move back to the desert. At least the southern belles look good, right? That humidity keeps their pores plump and dewy...whereas, in the desert, they look like dried out apples.

15931. anomie - 7/23/2005 9:51:14 PM

Ha! I'll have to take note of the skin conditions, now that you mention it.

Or...stock up on Jergins lotion.

15932. judithathome - 7/23/2005 9:56:12 PM

Southern women take care of their skin...must be all the vacations they take up north. Scares them into it. ;-)

15933. arkymalarky - 7/23/2005 9:59:26 PM

Hey all! Did someone say Arky?

I was lurking until I read in here. For some reason I have to log on every time I come in. I can't figure out what the deal is.

Dial-up is beginning to wear thin on me.

15934. arkymalarky - 7/23/2005 10:01:13 PM

Hope you had a great birthday, Pelle!

15935. anomie - 7/23/2005 10:06:28 PM

Arky, I read off and on about your doggie. I'm so sorry. I lost mine to the British Immigration policy years ago...but I know. I know the ghost at my heels... reminded me for weeks that she wasn't there.

I see you've recovered...

15936. arkymalarky - 7/23/2005 10:40:27 PM

Thanks Anomie. I still miss Diva, but this new puppy has been really great. I had reservations about getting another dog so soon, but we needed to for our sakes and for Mojo, and before we start back to school in August. Had Mazie been as challenging as some puppies I've known I might have ended up regretting it and none of us would be very happy. I don't mind her reminding us of Diva, and she really does, but I don't want to be comparing her to Diva and setting an impossible goal for her, and thankfully we haven't.

Your situation must have been heartbreaking. Pets come and go, but only one or two stand out as heart companions, if you're lucky.

Doggie folk may enjoy this series of photos....

day care adventures...

Just think, if we were Columbian drug traffickers we could send our dogs to such spas.

15938. Magoseph - 7/25/2005 11:51:19 AM

Hey, Ali, have you taken a week's vacation? How was it? Have you had a terrible heat where you were?

15939. alistairconnor - 7/25/2005 2:03:38 PM

Yes it was the annual week-long mountainbiking fart-fest... 600 km, countless litres of beer and rosé... more dirty jokes than I really needed to hear... if only we could capture all the methane, we wouldn't even have to pedal.

I shall probably file a report in due course, with photos of the usual suspects and some breathtaking landscapes.

15940. alistairconnor - 7/25/2005 2:11:21 PM

The heat on the first day (Sunday 17th) was indeed intense... leaving from the town of Joyeuse in Ardèche (and feeling just fine) we had a tough climb, and we all suffered. One of us collapsed, apparently a sudden drop in blood pressure. Some of us had to carry on until we could get cell reception, then we called for help, and they sent us a firetruck. The guy was OK by then -- he's a diabetic, but it wasn't a glycemic problem -- The crew were great, they took him back to the station for a rest, and he was fine for the rest of the week.

15941. judithathome - 7/25/2005 5:24:38 PM

It feels like a sauna outside. Supposed to top 100 today and with the humidity, it is going to feel like 110.
