Things aren't looking good for MIL. The word hospice has come up. Seems her skin is deteriorating badly...probably related to her PXE...a genetic disorder of the connective tissue.

Amazing that she's lasted this long with the disease. She's 91.

Hubby saw her yesterday and is going back today. Said she really looks bad.

Whatever it is, I hope it's quick and I hope they are keeping her full of pain meds. Hate to think that she's suffering at all. No way to tell really as she's noncommunicative at this point.

This really, really sucks.

What disease does she have? I can't remember which one.

Hello, Mago. Yes, it's a fine Michigan day, cool and sunny. Yesterday was nice also.

16334. thoughtful - 8/26/2005 2:46:49 PM

PXE...pseudo xanthoma elasticum

16335. judithathome - 8/26/2005 7:16:55 PM

I woke up with a pinched nerve in my right hip and now that I've been up awhile, I seem to be getting a summer cold.

I'm a mess today.

16336. Magoseph - 8/26/2005 11:26:04 PM

There were many things happening around here until five. People coming from Chicago and escorted to the lots. I haven't stopped since early this morning, meeting with them, answering the phone, and going to different stores when Flexy took over the showings.

Anyway, thoughtful, I just looked up this PXE and now realize what it is. I hope that your MIL will be made peaceful until the end and I give to you and your husband my best regards in this trying time.

I'm sorry to hear about your MIL, Thoughtful.

16338. arkymalarky - 8/27/2005 12:12:29 AM

I'm not, never have been, and likely never will be a morning person. So this first week of school has really been draining, as all the first weeks are for me. Bob likes to get to work early, and I like to leave at the last minute. I got my way when we worked and commuted together, but I don't think I would now. I relax with coffee and Mazie between when Bob leaves and when I have to leave.

I'm getting far more sleep now than I have in several years, since the surgery, and it's wonderful. I'd gotten so uncomfortable, besides being so busy and stressed, that I rarely got over three or four total hours of sleep a night.

My dad, who's very healthy and active, sleeps to around 10am every day. I'd have never thought he'd want to do that when he retired. He used to get up and run before work every morning.

Hope you're feeling better, Judith. You may have a sinus infection--as hot and hazy as it's been around here, it's terrible for breathing.

16340. Jenerator - 8/27/2005 2:59:52 AM

I have no idea what sleep is. I literally wake up every hour to pee.

16341. Jenerator - 8/27/2005 3:00:47 AM

Thoughtful,

Sorry to hear about your MIL. I hope your husband's taking it okay.

16342. judithathome - 8/27/2005 9:32:08 PM

Good thoughts coming your MIL's way, thoughful.

16343. judithathome - 8/27/2005 9:33:55 PM

We're going to our monthly dinner at the chef's house tonight. I don't know what he's making but it I know it will be good.

Looking forward to hearing about the Ukranian PHD's trip home in seach of a wife.

16344. judithathome - 8/27/2005 9:34:18 PM

Crap...in SEARCH.

16345. Magoseph - 8/28/2005 10:30:25 AM

What was on the menu, Judith?

16346. thoughtful - 8/28/2005 1:32:43 PM

Thanks for all the kinds wishes...hubby talked to folks at the home and they want to call in hospice for her...apparently they're given a lot more freedom for treating the terminal with pain meds than the std nursing home is, though the nurse in charge is doing everything she can to make sure MIL is not suffering.

It's just crappy though, the whole thing. Really makes you appreciate a quick and painless death.

16347. arkymalarky - 8/28/2005 3:40:02 PM

I hope they are able to continue to control her pain and make her as comfortable as possible. Hospice has been a great benefit to the few I've known who had it. Hopefully the process toward that will go very fast.

Took the MAT yesterday, and was lucky to get in on it under a special program where it was free. The GRE would have cost $200, or it was that much last I looked several years ago. It's probably higher now.

Now I've just got to finish filling out the paperwork and I'll be ready to register for a class this spring, then I'll get 12 hours this summer under another free program (a very intense seminar on working with ESL students and families).

Anyone with friends or family in New Orleans, I hope they're getting out ok.

16349. PelleNilsson - 8/28/2005 4:00:38 PM

What is MAT and GRE?

16350. arkymalarky - 8/28/2005 4:08:49 PM

They're graduate school entrance exams.
