What's the meaning of the title "The Blower's Daughter" by the Irish singer Damien Rice?

16983. Macnas - 10/12/2005 6:17:05 PM

Someone said to me that it was a ref. to someone he used to date. There is no particular Irish meaning to it.

Nice tune though.

16984. ScottLoar - 10/12/2005 6:25:11 PM

I had to ask, because I was curious as how to translate the meaning into Chinese. Could it not refer to "the glass blower's daughter"?

16985. Macnas - 10/12/2005 6:35:21 PM

Don't think so, but it sounds more romantic/prosaic that way I suppose. Something about the daughter of a teacher of his or something, that's what I recall.

If he was anything like some of my college professors, perhaps it's a more poetic way of saying "the blow-hard's daughter". ;->

But yes, it's a beautiful song. I think they used it in the film "Closer".

I can imagine your situation must be awkward, Alistair. I've experienced that feeling to a (much) lesser degree trying to stop working on the extra stuff I've been doing the last couple of years. I keep saying I'm done and people keep ignoring me. The problem is that I keep ignoring me too, and it's made for a few stressful meetings and some unpleasant feelings, at least on my part, with people I actually like. I'm beginning to look forward not to retirement, but just to the luxury of my job being my only professional obligation.

Scott

You might want to try listening to Declan O'Rourke, his song "Galileo" is very nice.

Which reminds me that I have two books by your Booker prize winner: Copernicus and Kepler.

16990. Macnas - 10/13/2005 3:53:26 PM

What do you think?

16991. PelleNilsson - 10/13/2005 5:00:38 PM

I had never heard of Banville when I bought the books. I thought they were popular biographies. But of course they are literary "biographies" with a lot of poetic licence. Powerful, though, and his language is evocative.

16992. Macnas - 10/13/2005 5:21:32 PM

Yes, that is his strength. His novels are fine examples of how to use the language.

16993. Magoseph - 10/13/2005 7:14:26 PM

Well, Mac must be home now and I missed him.

Hello, Moties!

Hi Magos!

16995. Magoseph - 10/13/2005 9:01:25 PM

I was waiting as you can see for someone to say hello to me.
How very nice of you to do so!

16996. Magoseph - 10/13/2005 9:03:17 PM

I'm watching the market--I'm nervous.
