The idea is to dip a knife in honey and scoop the peas onto it. There's actually a scene of that in To Kill a Mockingbird (one of my favorite scenes ), but I think the phrase has been around a long time and didn't originate with the book. 17045. Scott, I think the expression implies that one is trying to accomplish something without the proper tools and what it really amounts to is a form of sarcasm.
