Hi Arky. Nice words. I think of you all as friends I've never met.

Judith...I wish you well on that leg. You've been a real trooper about it from what I can tell. It doesn't seem to keep you down for long.

18698. arkymalarky - 2/26/2006 2:02:05 AM

Hey Anomie. I feel the same. Though I have met a few.

18699. wonkers2 - 2/26/2006 2:34:17 AM

I agree. The Mote is a bit of a community in contrast to Slate's Fray where there are too many posters for a community spirit to develop.

Yikes...

I sent out a job application a couple of weeks ago, and I've heard they've taken the step of having my references to write recommendations for me.

Very mixed feelings about this job.

(1) It's probably one of the best fits for my skill set. It would be an asst. professor position.

(2) It is intimindating that I would be entering the tenure process somewhere. There is a lot of competition for funding out there.

(3) I'm in a very interesting soft-money project here that was extended another year.

(4) I love where I live, and both my fiance and I would like to stay here the rest of our lives. The culture of my department is such that my chances to get something permanent here would require that I leave and come back one day... but that requires leaving.

(5) The job is in her hometown where her parents still live (coincidence)... the prospect of this has both postives and negatives.

Stress. I don't know what I'm going to do if they offer this thing to me. My 5% superstitious nature predicts that because I'm not 100% sure about this job that I will be offered it.

Suggestion: don't give them your Mote moniker. They are probably Googling you as we speak. :-)

Decisions, decisions. Never very easy. Unfortunately, when you decide, if you don't like the outcome, life doesn't allow for a "do over".

Good news on the hubby front....his PSA has returned to normal. Doc did another exam and another xray and everything looks just fine. He asked what caused this terrible infection in the first place and doc's answer was the equivalent of "search me!"

I'm most pleased and relieved. I'm sure he is too.

18706. judithathome - 2/27/2006 9:31:59 PM

Wow...such great news, Thoughful!! You two should celebrate with a nice meal and some really good wine!

18707. wonkers2 - 2/27/2006 9:38:33 PM

That's good news, t-ful!

18708. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 2/27/2006 9:58:42 PM

Indeed!

I’m very happy for you and your hubby, thoughtful. Our husbands are tough, it seems. Flexy’s doing fine and starting to walk bouncing his arm about, although he still can’t bend his wrist. We went to Chicago Saturday and he did not complain once about my driving—-he was just happy to get out and see the sights.

18710. arkymalarky - 2/28/2006 12:20:10 AM

Wow, that's great Thoughtful. I know that was scary.

18711. thoughtful - 2/28/2006 12:44:01 AM

Thanks guys. You're all terrific.

In fact

dare I say it?

You're downright thoughtful!!!

iii : interesting situation : for career prospects, sounds like a good option...
for family prospects... you be the judge. If you're planning on children soon, it could be a plus.

18714. alistairconnor - 2/28/2006 4:08:22 PM

Ulgine : I circulated that "consulting" riff to the fine group of people that have been assembled for the project that just got killed...

didn't find anyone disagreeing...
We just had a break-up lunch together, about 20 of us.
What a waste.

Don't know if you recall many moons ago, we started writing poems inspired by enron. I wrote one and have gotten a lot of mileage out of it in various talks I give.

But with skilling in court, I've had to add the last 2 stanzas, but I think it holds up well...usually gets a good round of applause.

It would be thrilling
To make a killing
Thought Jeff Skilling
Working at Enron one day.

No profits, no care he
Make subsidiary
To snow the unwary
Just like his best bud, Ken Lay.

But profits did tumble
And pyramids crumble
So Skilling did mumble
I no see, I no hear, I no say

But worried I'm not
It's a dunk shot
Protection I've got
As Congress is on Enron's pay.

Of this there's no doubt
The money's run out
He's lost all his clout
To court they have dragged him away.

So don't you be burned
By money unearned
A lesson is learned
From the Enron morality play.

18716. iiibbb - 2/28/2006 5:17:27 PM

Thanks.

It would be a hard move because my roots run deep here. It won't be quite as awful as times I've pulled up roots before since it's her hometown.

At least this time I wouldn't be alone.

All of this is academic until the offer the job... which is probably a could 2 or 3 cuts away. Personally I hope I make the interview. If they don't offer, I will be quite content to stay in this project and location another year. If they do offer it, well... that's when the real strategy starts.

I could do a lot worse than this location.

When I was a kid I had a propensity to sit in the surf and keep waiting for the perfect wave. My brother would ride anything that came along. Kind-of the same with deer hunting. You pass something up, there's a chance you won't see anything any better for a while.
