Well his art isn't watercolor...rather it's done through solar etching on glass and then the color is added as part of the printing process so no two pieces are ever the same.

I asked if he had a particular sky in mind as he colored them and he said no...he likened it to a jazz player who knows all the elements and then assembles them to make unique creations.

Very neat stuff.

Well, I was just quoting what I recall him dubbing the Tour...I'm probably wrong.

19061. thoughtful - 4/3/2006 10:09:16 PM

well he could come in and correct us...it may be that he does both, but i only saw the prints.

regardless, he intimated yesterday that he's getting tired of the mote as, no matter how nice he tries to be, seems he's always getting slammed by someone.

this place is getting deader'n'a doornail

19062. arkymalarky - 4/3/2006 10:51:23 PM

I disagree. But I've been here ten/eleven years and I've never seen a time of any length in the Mote or the Fray when that wasn't posted. In the spring and summer, from Fray days, it would go almost completely dead, which disappointed me because that's the only time I had time to participate after the first year in the Fray, when my work schedule was probably the easiest it's ever been in my career.

The Mote is obviously not what it once was, but it's no more or less busy than it has been since the exodus of a few years ago. The house is always a lot quieter when you get a divorce, and that's not necessarily a bad thing compared to the alternative. Since we don't have a dynamic that lends itself to drawing in new prospects unless they're urged in by someone who knows us--sort of like a blind date--it's stayed quieter. But Alistair is the one who is actually able to look and tell one way or another, I believe.

There are a lot of forums on the net now; many are more dynamic and more active, but also less personal, more slanted one way or another, and more restrictive. I hope Wiz stays on. He adds a lot here.

I feel about the Mote like I do my school. I love it, I enjoy it, and I am glad to overlook the blemishes. I don't consider smallness a negative, but if enough others do and it's one day no longer here, I'm done with forums. Just like I'm done with teaching if my school closes.

19064. PsychProf - 4/3/2006 11:06:20 PM

I talked with Irv Snodgrass today. He is fine, healthy, and has a busy life.

19065. wonkers2 - 4/4/2006 1:34:48 AM

Give Irv my regards. His mother taught my children at Brookside school. Where is he? Why doesn't he come back to the Mote? And where have you been, professor?

19066. arkymalarky - 4/4/2006 2:09:50 AM

That's great to hear, PP. Thanks for the update.

19067. Macnas - 4/4/2006 8:26:55 AM

We seem to have a conversation about this at least once a year.

No, the old grey Mote, she aint what she used to be. But what thing on the internet is?
I like the easy going way here, I like the people here (most of them, sorry Pelle, I just cannot stand Vikings) and small works fine for me.

I'm a satisfied Mote person.

I'm a satisfied Mote person.

I'm so glad that you are, Mac.

19069. PsychProf - 4/4/2006 12:38:33 PM

Wonkers...I am unsure what personal info he wants me to mention...I will ask him.

19070. thoughtful - 4/4/2006 12:54:56 PM

PP, do give irv my regards...I still have the lovely throw he gave me and think of him often. I do wish he'd pop back in here...I miss the old gang.

and PP don't be such a stranger...

19071. RickNelson - 4/4/2006 1:22:40 PM

Arky, I'm glad to read you've given no news about the storms. No news is good news?

You sound very busy, but full is better than dull.

Best regards to you thoughtful, belated happy birthday.

I'm also happy to be popping in and reading from you all.

If there were one thing I would change, it would be myself.

I cannot rewrite my history with you all, and the past gang. At the heart of me I'm the same, but the dyanmic of me has changed. Really settling down, taking life one day at a time with my family is by and far the best teacher.

For me, appreciation runs deep.

One of the things that gets in the way these days is getting ill. Seems every other week Jacob finds another virus at daycare. We all get it. This past six weeks, I was sick four. One was a miserable sinus infection. We've all been well for about ten days now.

My best to you all.

19072. PelleNilsson - 4/4/2006 1:23:05 PM

I would be devasted, Macnas, hadn't I known that you don't like Vikings because you don't like Dublin, which last time I visited played up its presumed Viking heritage something awful. In any case, those were Danish Vikings. We Swedes directed our mission civilisatrice towards the east.

19073. thoughtful - 4/4/2006 1:34:31 PM

Thanks rick

19074. Macnas - 4/4/2006 2:28:55 PM

Pelle

Be quiet you horned helmet wearing, woden worshiping long boat marauder from an ice-blasted wasteland.

19075. arkymalarky - 4/4/2006 3:20:27 PM

Hey Rick!

You sound very busy, but full is better than dull.

No it isn't!!! ;-)

After I finish my masters I plan to teach and continue working on rural ed issues (not nearly as much, though) and otherwise do whatever floats my boat.

19076. arkymalarky - 4/4/2006 3:23:43 PM

But you're the guy with your hands full, Rick. Give us an update on Jacob and your daughter! I always think about her when you post because she and Mose are the same age.

I hope everyone manages to stay well a while. Maybe since spring is here it will happen. I seem to recall that goes through a year or two of repeating sick cycles and settles down. You're just all getting exposed to stuff you haven't been. The first year I taught I caught the flu twice--once right before Christmas and the other right before spring break.

19077. arkymalarky - 4/4/2006 3:25:34 PM

I absolutely agree with Mac about the Mote--except the Viking part! ;-)

As Carly Simon said, these are the good old days.

19078. arkymalarky - 4/4/2006 3:27:20 PM

Oh, and the storms hit the northeast corner of the state pretty badly. Because of our strong state-wide school network I know they're not doing well in Marmaduke because of the damage, but they were very lucky compared to Tennessee and others.
