I think it's going to be really cold this winter where I am...the squirrels' tails are really bushy.

And I think more people will lose their homes, food prices will go up, people will freeze in their homes (if they still live in them) because the costs of heating fuel are going up, and the Democrats will be blamed for everything George Bush has caused no matter who is President.

Jen, I moved your post here: Message # 37641 in thread 155.

24488. Jenerator - 10/9/2008 5:23:32 PM

Why not move the post that precipiated my response? It's political in nature too!

24489. judithathome - 10/9/2008 6:23:23 PM

Yes, it WAS political in nature and I apologize for dragging politics into the Cafe.

And in your response, Jen, you were absolutely correct...it WILL and we will.

So, back to Magos original intention: what do YOU think is going to happen this winter...let's say, with the weather.

Do you recall having a cool autumn like this before? Here in Texas, I mean...I can't recall the nighttime temperatures dropping as low as they are currently doing this early in the season...not for a long time.

24490. alistairConnor - 10/10/2008 1:10:17 AM

Cold autumn over here too.

My girlfriend came up with a really elegant malapropism this morning...

I had left the top couple of buttons of my shirt undone.
What she meant to say was,
"Boutonne ta chemise. Tu ressemble à un Gitan"
that is,
"Button up your shirt. You look like a Gipsy".

(Mildly amusing and slightly racist)

BUT she's got a bit of an accent in French, and what she actually said was

"Boutonne ta chemise. Tu ressemble à un giton"
that is,
"Button up your shirt. You look like a rent boy".

I had to explain the word "giton" for her. It comes from Petronius's Satyricon - Giton was the protagonist's boyfriend.

OOOO rent boys!!!

The job my wife is gunning for has finally been announced. She just has to make it through the office of personnel management and make the 'cert'. This is no small task as it's usually low-paid people trying to evaluate someone's PhD credentials. It can be very subjective on their part, and very frustrating on the applicant's part. Is a Quantitative Ecology course an "Ecology" course if it has a STAT number... that kind of crap.

Keep your fingers crossed for us. We'll find out early December probably.

I am very nervous for her.

24494. arkymalarky - 10/11/2008 6:35:32 PM

We're rooting for y'all! Keep us posted.

24495. judithathome - 10/11/2008 6:44:00 PM

3i3b, I'll send good thoughts your wife's way, for sure!

24496. iiibbb - 10/11/2008 9:26:04 PM

Thanks guys.

24497. iiibbb - 10/11/2008 9:30:53 PM

I'm a little annoyed. I went out for a run and had to pepper spray a dog. Why don't people keep their dogs in their yard.

24498. arkymalarky - 10/12/2008 6:28:35 PM

Just want to let everyone know that this is the last day I will have internet at home except on my blackberry, which means that from now on posts will be short and full of typos. Also, my email is now myfullname@gmail.com.

24499. judithathome - 10/12/2008 6:51:56 PM

Just sent one off to you, Arky...let me know if it's correct!

24500. Ms. No - 10/12/2008 6:52:38 PM

I'll change it in my contacts. Have you taken any bets on how long you guys will go before you want internet at home again?

24501. arkymalarky - 10/12/2008 6:59:59 PM

I don't know. My blackberry's functional here and Bob just bought an iphone, so we'll go with those unless or until we get frustrated and go back to dialup.

24502. arkymalarky - 10/12/2008 7:00:38 PM

Got it and replied, Judith!

24503. arkymalarky - 10/12/2008 7:10:50 PM

With Wildblue I thought I'd watch more videos and get more out of the internet with downloads, music, graphics, etc. I got none of it. Without all that, all I really do is read, which is still the greatest thing about the internet, imo. I can see pictures that are sent on mine or Bob's phone, I can get high speed at work or at my parents' house, and website stuff I do for work can't be done on satellite internet, either. The iphone is also great for videos, music, etc.

My advice to anyone considering satellite internet is DON'T. I was stuck with an 18 month contract and it was more frustrating by far than dialup, because with dialup I knew I couldn't do things I expected to be able to on Wildblue. For $50 a month after about $200 or more to set it up, plus $150 for a router so we could be on at the same time, it was absolutely not worth it. If I had lots of kids and family sending lots of pictures it might have been worth it.

We just need civilization to creep a little further this way: Natural gas and DSL would be nice one of these days, but they're not worth moving for.

24504. judithathome - 10/12/2008 7:23:53 PM

If you ever get the idea of moving, call me and I will talk you down!

24505. iiibbb - 10/12/2008 7:29:43 PM

I don't like forced contracts a la cell phones and satilite TV. We got satellite when we moved here and although it's mostly better the 24 mo. lock-in sucks. When we move north I'm going to dump direct TV like a ton of bricks.

I'll wait and see about cell phone. P and I have different opinions about services.
