From an email I got this morning from my son:

I think this is a wonderful idea. Please pass it on to those you think might participate.

When doing your Christmas cards this year, take one card and send it to this address. If we pass this on and everyone sends one card, think of how many cards these wonderful special people who have sacrificed so much would get.

When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following:

A Recovering American Soldier
C/O Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20307-5001

Please disregard suggestion above:

Walter Reed will return ALL mail to sender if it is addressed as shown in the email forwarded by Julie. Here's text from the Walter Reed website:
"WRAMC (Walter Reed Army Medical Center) is a Department of Defense hospital and must comply with the US Postal Services Policies. We are deeply grateful on behalf of our patients for the number of cards and letters that thousands of Americans sent showing their concern and support for our warriors here and at military medical facilities across the nation. Unfortunately, we must now revert back to the US Postal Services policy that prohibits receipt of packages, letters, and cards addressed to 'Any Wounded Soldier' or 'A Recovering American Soldier'. For security and safety reasons, the U.S. Postal Service cannot deliver "Any Service Member" or "A Recovering American Soldier" letters or packages. Every one of the 700,000 letters and cards that were sent over the holidays were screened by the American Red Cross and several hundred volunteers helped with the screening process. The volunteers found a number of parcels that contained inappropriate comments but because of the screening process, these were not delivered to a recovering service member. The US Postal Service policy, not WRAMC's policy is that mail to "Any Service Member" that is deposited into a collection box will be returned to sender."

As I remember they stopped delivering "care" packages addressed to "any soldier" in Kosovo back in the late 90's.

24666. judithathome - 11/20/2008 7:15:32 PM

Well, it was a good idea...another case of a few people fucking up a generous gesture by others because they can't be trusted to do actual charitable deeds properly.

Man, I'm sinking into a Bah! Humbug! mood today...

24667. anomie - 11/20/2008 7:36:35 PM

You got that right. I remember before they stopped the packages, our troops would get them from school kid groups - whole classes sometimes. Lots of handmade cards and drawings, and notes and letters. Cute, uplifting stuff.

Back from fighting little old chinawomen via Macy's. Sidewalk clogged with suckers looking at two Crimmus windows, one with kittens, the other puppies and half a dozen animal rights activists begging bucks for poor things

SPCA racket

Happy Thanksgiving, Moties...we're going to three different places.

Keoni is in the kitchen making pies...which means I'm not allowed in there.

24674. robertjayb - 11/27/2008 7:53:19 PM

Revolution in the jayb thanksgiving kitchen: the turkey is being roasted upsidedown. I'm dubious but hesitant to comment lest I be invited to take over.

24675. arkymalarky - 11/27/2008 8:00:30 PM

Smart. I'm at inlaws and away from kitchen. Wouldn't want to ruin my reputation. Happy Thanksgiving!

24676. wonkers2 - 11/28/2008 12:00:02 AM

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

24677. magoseph - 11/28/2008 1:33:24 AM

We feasted on avocados, cranberries, and artichoke hearts salad--that was all and plenty for us old folks.

24678. magoseph - 11/28/2008 1:38:19 AM

The cranberries were sent to us and looked even better than in this picture.

24679. magoseph - 11/28/2008 8:38:36 PM

At ten last night, a neighbor called us and asked if we had a turkey dinner—we happily told the couple about our fare for the day. Ten minutes later, the man came over, rang, and gave me a big brown bag—-Guess what we found in it?

24680. wonkers2 - 11/28/2008 11:03:47 PM

A live turkey?

24681. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 11/28/2008 11:50:12 PM

Was the bag on fire?

24682. magoseph - 11/29/2008 12:47:51 AM

The bag contained six thick slices of cooked butterball turkey, a dish of glazed yams, another of walnut salad, twelve home baked rolls, two pies--one apple and the other pumpkin, a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and what I liked the most, a carton full of fancy appetizers. This gift was because we gave them a good deal on a small piece of property adjoining the one we sold them in 2005 and because we did this, they were able to build the patio they always dreamed about, so they told us. We still can’t get over this gesture because there is nothing we could have done with the strip of land we practically gave away to them.
