On free wifi at a great cafe in Hot Springs. Can't wait until Obama gets us decent internet out in the country. I'm disgusted that Starbuck's is charging for wifi now, and so is McDonald's. Now it's back to the only reason for driving to town being WalMart.

A wee fee for wifi. The end of the golden age.

25265. Ms. No - 4/25/2009 9:43:21 PM

It's not a wee fee at all. It's $9.95 for the day --- but who spends the whole day at Starbucks? It's their deal with T-Mobile. And even if you did spend the whole day there, I get 30 days a month for $35. That's just over a dollar a day.

Yet another reason to avoid Starbucks. I've never been rabidly anti-Starbucks, but I live in a city that still has a lot of independent coffee houses and there's no reason not to go to them instead. AND they provide free wifi were I inclined to use it.

Congrats AC. And the van didn't break down or anything? Nice trip.

25267. arkymalarky - 4/25/2009 10:07:44 PM

HI'm with No. I like Starbuck's fine, but I prefer the locals as well. And in the town nearest us I get my free wifi from the hospital parking lot if I have to have it and don't want to go to my parents' house.

25268. anomie - 4/25/2009 11:31:43 PM

10 bucks a day! Outrageous! Besides, I think Stabucks changed their coffee a few years ago and it lost taste. I never buy ot for home use anymore. I use Seattle's Best or Costco brand.

And the van didn't break down or anything?

Funny you should ask. Big bang and loss of power as we started home through Holland, I thought, hell, I've blown the turbo (it's happened once before). Drove into The Hague and phoned my insurance for help. Didn't even try to lift the lid on the engine.
Turned out it was only the air hose that feeds the turbo. BUT there was none to be had in the Netherlands, we would have had to wait five days... this was Friday. So we taped up the hose and drove on to Belgium, with a light foot (if I had accelerated too hard it would have blown the hose again), where we had friends to visit. There, the small-town Citroen dealer got the part for us within hours.

Since you asked...

The van has been excellent, but it's over five years old and 150 000 km, it's bound to give trouble now and then.

I can't post now because my husband is not well--I'll be back when he recovers. Take care!

I hope he's better asap, Mags, and you get time soon to fill us in.

Life Imitates Art :

My girlfriend's employer may be sending her to Geneva, in connection with the swine flu.

To the WHO.

or Costco brand.

We drink nothing but CostCo DeCaf...most people who drink our coffee can't believe it isn't regular stuff.

I love CostCo DeCaf!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Flexy!

I'm a fan of "8 o'clock" beans. I don't brew coffee at home very often, but when I do that's my choice.

Currently I'm avoiding caffeine because I put my facette joint out and it's excruciating. Anything to keep the muscles more relaxed at this point is a good thing.

I've done this before --- about two years ago --- and it's honestly the most painful thing I've ever experienced. Plus it's frustrating as hell not being able to move around as I need. I went to the chiropractor yesterday and this morning and I've got another adjustment this afternoon. They're closed tomorrow so I'm on bedrest until my next adjustment on Friday.

On the good news front, we're doing standardized testing this week so I only had to teach on Monday and then one class yesterday afternoon and one tomorrow. It's a lost instruction week since so many seniors are skipping --- they don't have to do the testing so they're not coming to school. I'm showing Clue as a classic example of farce.

Maybe your schools will do what ours have done: the entire school system has closed until May 11...because of swine flu.

25281. Ms. No - 5/1/2009 4:41:38 AM

I just found out that a school in our area has been closed --- 5 cases of swine flu. Yikes!!

25282. Ms. No - 5/1/2009 4:45:41 AM

Make that 3 cases. It's a private catholic school but I don't know which one.

We have a lot of students at our school that travel back and forth to Mexico or have relatives who do, but our Spring Break is weeks behind us now so I think we're fine on that front for the time being. We got info on ramped up non-contagion procedures and spray bottles of anti-bacterial solution to paint our rooms with after classes and our students are pretty good about washing their hands and using hand sanitizer.

I'll keep my fingers crossed....and washed!
