Imo

Arky...my college freshman, as a group, are barely literate. I guess we live in different educational worlds.

Thanks for posting with me.

26671. thoughtful - 12/18/2011 7:52:16 PM

I understand your concern as it could be confusing to the young'un if he gets mixed messages from his various family members....of course he won't be the first or last child to be subject to conflicting messages. As he gets older he will learn to dismiss certain remarks made by those he loves. We all have to do that at some....or rather many...points in our lives.

26672. Ms. No - 12/18/2011 8:45:54 PM

Prof,

But are they barely literate because education has gotten worse, or are they barely literate because people who would never have even considered going to college have been pushed to do so?

I fall more on the side of the latter explanation.

26673. iiibbb - 12/18/2011 9:52:18 PM

They are barely literate because the paradigm has shifted from going to college to make something of yourself, to one where college is something you have to do before you get a real job; you don't learn anything useful in college, you'll be trained for your job when you get the job.

And since students are _paying_ there is an expectation they get the reward automatically.

----

but Ms No... your are right too. I went to college before I knew what I wanted to get out of it (and my slight ADHD required that I completely change the way I worked and studied compared to high school). As a result I struggled for a few years before I really started to perform.

26674. iiibbb - 12/18/2011 9:54:25 PM

Half of me thinks it wouldn't be a bad idea for 2 years of public-service to be a requirement after high school... military, peace corps, or a domestic peace corp of some kind... but I wonder about the liability.

26675. arkymalarky - 12/19/2011 1:00:57 AM

No is right. And that is why, as I've said before, they have Fs. Teachers need to apply them at all levels. I've seen brilliant students who had poor literacy skills but excelled in math and science. They adjusted as they had to in order to get their degrees. Education is the journey, not the destination.

26676. arkymalarky - 12/19/2011 1:14:51 AM

Oh, and PP, I'm thrilled to see you posting here and to have a substantive discussion, like old times!

26677. Ms. No - 12/19/2011 8:28:56 AM

3i3b,

I agree with you about two years of service after high school. I think it would be a way to get rich kids into real life and poor kids out into the wider world....although I'm sure I couldn't sell it that way or be declaimed for social engineering or something.

At any rate, I think it's good for everyone to spend a good chunk of time working toward the benefit of others without thoughts of compensation or how to advance personal employement or monetary goals.

26678. Ms. No - 12/19/2011 8:35:11 AM

substitute "decried" for "declaimed"

Rusty. Talking to teens has made my vocabulary very, very rusty.

26679. iiibbb - 12/20/2011 5:11:13 PM

Thoughtful - I'm not worried about the boy. My wife and I are on the same page, and the boy is going to be raised Jewish anyway. I don't think Christianity is something one can really claim until they are older.

We also got the book... it wasn't that good. We're going to donate it to something.

26680. thoughtful - 12/21/2011 5:17:44 PM

isbs, you might enjoy this book if you haven't seen it....

If you've ever wondered why people pay millions and millions to get elected to a position that pays $174,000 a year, it's because of the rampant opportunities for self dealing once you're in. Peter Schweizer has researched and documented such dealings...all perfectly legal...on the part of both party members. Stunning.

I think you meant to post this in Politics....interesting read, however!

26682. arkymalarky - 12/21/2011 9:39:32 PM

Just getting over the worst stomach virus I've ever had after 3 days. Hope no one I came in contact with gets it. They were talking about it at school but I didn't think anything about it. Two days ago went to the emergency room snd saw on fb others had to do the same. Glad to finally be feeling a little better.

26683. judithathome - 12/21/2011 9:48:31 PM

Are you sure it wasn't something to do with food? (I know at your other school you would take your lunch but for everyone to end up in the ER, it sounds almost food-borne...)

Sorry to hear it was so brutal...or that you got it at all.

26684. arkymalarky - 12/21/2011 10:30:38 PM

No, it was an extra bad virus that's been making the rounds the last few weeks. The nurse assistant had it and the nurse's daughter. Some fif the kids had it during school and it hit me two says after getting out. Grading papers is what usually does it but I've had most everything.

26685. arkymalarky - 12/21/2011 10:31:59 PM

Thanks. I'd hate to see anyone with it. So far Stan seems okay. He's been a huge help.

26686. iiibbb - 12/22/2011 3:10:15 AM

For teachers' amusement

A short film.

26687. arkymalarky - 12/22/2011 5:13:16 AM

Love it! In my new job I'm getting questions I haven't had in tears because a lot if the kids don't know me. One is about extra credit. I tell them what my husband does: do the credit then cime ask me. He has some good lines. When kids ask for a free day he tells them it will be free. He won't charge them a dime.
