Ooooooh ooooh ooooooh Wabbit! I've been meaning to email you! First week of June but VERY flexible!

Basically Stan and I are open schedule wise all summer. If August works better for people we can do it then.

First step, find the hot water heater vent....it's under that 5' drift somewhere....

27173. arkymalarky - 2/9/2013 6:35:58 PM

Seeking advice from Arky, Ms. No., et al.

I have recently acquired a step-grandson (?) who is soon to turn 16. My son and I swap books as gifts and I hope to continue that practice with this kid. For one I have decided on the new How to not write bad by journalism prof Ben Yagoda. Reviews say it is short, sometimes funny, and useful.

For the old I'm thinking of searching closets and boxes for
The Catcher in the Rye and Jonathan Livingson Seagull. I was way beyond teens when I read and enjoyed them and wonder if they are readable by "these kids today." As I recall they have some similar themes. Too much 60s, 70s claptrap? Just too old?

I would like to add some contemporary fiction. Please no zombies or vampires. Comments and a suggestion or two will be appreciated.

Something I recall from the 60s was The Prophet by Kahil Gibran.

Young adult novels are a big genre now. I'll ask my kids for some suggestions that aren't ones he may have already read or rejected like The Hunger Games. If he's the type to enjoy JL Seagull, most would like Catcher I think. I'll get back with you.

Arky, on the Teen Championships on Jeopardy, a young man from Little Rock won the whole thing...he was sharp as a tack and did his high school proud!

27179. arkymalarky - 2/12/2013 9:11:00 PM

I heard about him! Some of the kids knew him from state school competitions!

27180. judithathome - 2/12/2013 10:06:17 PM

He was absolutely brilliant...and in the chat portions of the shows, he was very well-spoken and witty. Fine young man!

He didn't get the last question but arranged his bet in such a way that he knew he'd won...he wrote his answer as "Who was....the guy that lead the Normandy invasion and I am going to win $75,000!"

An ARcteen girl won years ago and one of our kids roomed with her in college. Pretty good for a small high poverty state!

27182. alistairconnor - 2/13/2013 6:40:58 PM

Hey Bhel, yes I remember well those early days... Except the chatroom episode! Must have been one of those timezone things. I ended up doing a lot of fraying in the small hours, which probably contributed to the breakup of my marriage.

But yeah, I definitely want to do India. The Second Mrs C was there last year professionally, and would be keen to go back for tourism. So... if the invitation is still open...

27183. arkymalarky - 2/13/2013 9:02:36 PM

Robert, the consensus was Sunrise Over Fallujah. They agreed he'd like Catcher

27184. arkymalarky - 2/14/2013 3:18:11 AM

We know the Arky in American Idol too. Hope she wins it all!

27185. bhelpuri - 2/14/2013 8:17:55 AM

Connor, what's your email address? You should definitely take a trip to the subcontinent if at all interested, and definitely factor in a week to chill on this precious sliver of the Konkan coastline!

Bhel, you add an at wanadoo dot fr to my "pseudonym" and you've got it. What's the best season?...

Definitely time for an "exotic" destination. I've been holding out for Morocco for five years now, but sadly, I may have to wait until my father-out-law dies... Family values and all that.

27188. arkymalarky - 2/14/2013 4:42:10 PM

Happy anniversary Judith!
