27260. arkymalarky - 4/11/2013 9:29:44 PM No, I meant the original. Looking for a good online game or phone app. I have one good one That's a demo, but it's a little steep to buy--$40 27261. iiibbb - 4/11/2013 9:29:49 PM A Chinese friend once asked me if I knew how to play Mah Jongg and following a brief conversation after I'd answered in the affirmative I found out that a)I did not b)It is a loaded question if you're only experience with Mah Jongg is the solitaire version you see as computer games. 27262. arkymalarky - 4/11/2013 9:30:44 PM The domino game 42 is a Set game also. It's a lot of fun 27263. arkymalarky - 4/11/2013 9:32:18 PM Stan's Malaysian niece in law plays it, and gave me a site, that I don't like it that well. It tells you what's available, instead of letting you find it yourself 27264. judithathome - 4/11/2013 11:08:40 PM I played Mah Jong in Okinawa with the maid...couldn't tell you the first thing about it now, though...in fact, I think I was drinking most afternoons when we played.
She was so nice about it, though...considering neither one of us spoke the others' language.
Come to think of it, maybe I just dreamed I played it with her...ha! 27265. robertjayb - 4/18/2013 10:32:11 PM Yay! First hummingbird. Three days late. We usually put feeders out April 15.
Boo! Only three-tenths of an inch of rain from what TV talkers touted as a substantial thunder storm. 27266. arkymalarky - 4/19/2013 12:20:12 AM Rain and hummingbirds here. Extra lovely spring. 27267. robertjayb - 4/21/2013 5:30:26 PM As a partial antidote to the week's hysteria I suggest "Ring of Bright Water" on the Turner movie channel. 27268. arkymalarky - 4/21/2013 8:53:02 PM I loved that book 27269. Jenerator - 4/22/2013 8:02:44 PM Judith,
Have you been able to check out Dude, Sweet Chocolate, yet?
It's a wonderful chocolate shop that has (finally) expanded outside of the Bishop Arts District.
Seriously some of the best and strangest chocolate combos. See here:

My favorite is A Fungus Amongus
Try it with a glass of prosecco and triple fat cheese (Delice, etc.)
You'll be in heaven! 27270. judithathome - 4/23/2013 7:22:54 AM Thanks for the heads up. We go to the Movie Tavern in that area once in awhile...there's also a gelato shop nearby.
Will definitely check that chocolate place out! 27271. Ms. No - 4/24/2013 3:36:15 PM I'm on my way to a writing workshop with Pat Schneider this morning! Running a bit behind schedule so I'll tell you more later, but I'm really excited about this. We use the AWA method in our Creative Writing Club at school and I really love it. We've gotten some awesome works from our student poets. 27272. Jenerator - 4/24/2013 9:52:18 PM The AP here didn't even offer Creative Writing this year. I usually partner up with the teacher and make the publication related to the class. Evidently the school doesn't think the class is important, even though dozens of kids are in it and we sell out of the publication every year.
What the heck? 27273. Ms. No - 4/25/2013 5:57:04 AM Our school is so small that we don't have any electives other than the Medical Science classes which are a required part of our curriculum so they aren't really "elective" even though that's how they count on the transcript.
Our kids meet on Wednesdays after school from 3:45 to 5:30. For the last two years we've been partnered with a non-profit program that promotes literacy through poetry and creative writing so they're the ones that publish our book. Our students have been out to a bunch of events to perform their work, and I've really watched them grow as writers.
They presented at a dinner for Dolores Huerta earlier this month and at the end of the evening they had almost as many fans wanting pictures with them as she did. It's had a tremendous effect on their self esteem and confidence.
Most of these kids live in the projects. Nobody wants to hear what they have to say --- nobody thinks they have anything worth saying. To see a crowd of strangers rapt by their words has been really empowering for them. I know for a fact that this program has convinced some of them to go to college when they never believed that they would've belonged there.
It's truly been one of the best things I've been involved with as a teacher.
27274. arkymalarky - 4/25/2013 7:04:43 PM That's so great. It's truly Why I love my job. 27275. Jenerator - 4/25/2013 8:45:49 PM Ms. No,
That is incredible!! I love it! Maybe you could talk with the community newspaper and/or the person in charge of the school's marquee and ask for camera donations. I bet some of those kids are naturally good photographers. It would be great to feature some of their artistic endeavors outside of prose and poetry. Here (until this year!) we showcased paiting, jewelry making, photography, drawing and pastel work in addition to short stories and poetry.
Your kids sound awesome - they're lucky to have you! :) 27276. Jenerator - 4/25/2013 8:46:15 PM *painting 27277. judithathome - 4/27/2013 5:14:46 PM Received a postcard in the mail announcing a birthday celebration on the same day as my birthday...it's for the family-owned, family-operated grocery store at the top of the hill. They've been around for 70 years, just like me.
It's a small little store that caters to the richie riches who live nearby...they have gourmet items, really expensive locally grown produce, outrageously priced meats...some exotic..and they will order anything for you if they don't have it. They do home delivery and some families have used them exclusively since they opened. About 20 years ago, they opened a catering section and nearly every society party for years was catered by this little mom and pop business.
My son worked there during high school, delivering groceries to indolent housewives too lazy to go to the store themselves.
I say props to them for remaining open for all these years...that's not easy, especially for a food store. 27278. arkymalarky - 4/27/2013 7:54:10 PM How neat! Are you going? 27279. judithathome - 4/27/2013 8:24:13 PM Yeah, I think we'll drop by!
