maybe it's a mary poppins thing...remember just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down...just a spoonful of ice cream helps the veggies go down???

Of course, ice-cream is not in my diet, but from time to time Flexy picks up some vanilla at Uncle Harry's place, the local ice-cream expert, and I eat it with honey poured over it--once in a great while, though, because I feel obliged to double my time walking that day.

Mags, I love ice cream. Though I'm not sure I'd like it with honey. Never tried it. I used to mix vanilla and honey into plain yogurt in my yogurt-eating days and it was tasty.

Our rule with ice cream is we don't keep any in the house. If I want ice cream, I have to go to the ice cream parlor which is a drive away and pay the premium price. It's also better than store bought so worth the higher price. But making it difficult to obtain also makes it infrequently eaten, which is much better on my waistline.

From a sugar shock point of view, real cream ice cream is not so bad as the sugar comes with a lot of fat which helps slow down the sugar shock and the high fat helps keep you from overeating. Not that it's good for your blood sugar...just that it's not so bad. And if you get the real all natural stuff, it's real food...not artificial junk like in the store-bought baked goods and no transfats.

We can't keep cheese or ice cream around because we'll eat it all the same day it's bought. When Flexy buys ice cream, he just brings a pint, which we share. Cheese is definitely my downfall and I have asked Flexy not to get it anymore--the last time he brought sharp cheddar, a couple of weeks ago, I ate the chunk in one sitting, making sandwiches with rye bread. I just could not stop and I was so disgusted with myself, it's not worth the indulgence.

Sorry to change subjects here, but do you know what I saw at the store recently that had me cringing? Buttered popcorn flavored syrup for drinks! I think Torani made it or Michelanglo syrups. Can't remember.

Yes, I'll take a buttered popcorn flavored latte, please.

YUCK!

2716. Magoseph - 3/8/2005 12:38:09 AM

You know, I can't stand the smell of popcorn, never could--it makes feel nauseated. At school, once in a while, someone would pop in the microvawe one of these packages that reek of cooked grease and the cafeteria smelled horrible. It smelled as bad the next day, that is how pervasive that smell is.

2717. Jenerator - 3/8/2005 12:39:39 AM

It makes the microwave at home stink for a few days. I like some popcorn, but only very seldomly.

Just imagine that smell and taste in your soda water or coffee!

Thoughtful, when you mentioned the ice cream parlor near your house, I had this powerful need to go there for a while--I asked Flexy if he was game, but luckily he said--no, not really.

2719. Jenerator - 3/8/2005 12:45:19 AM

I just never crave ice cream. These days, I cannot get enough of spicy foods. I was eating peppers and chiles out of the jar a couple of days ago. My husband just looked at me as though I had flipped.

2720. Magoseph - 3/8/2005 12:49:06 AM

Flexy and I like to have Pepsi Cola around, but lately we eliminated it because we found that each of us would drink three or more everyday. We decided that was ridiculous and possibly harmful, so we switched to Perrier water. Today, he said, you know I can’t take all these bubbles, how about drinking just plain bottled water instead? Fine, good idea by me, really—I was starting to drink too much Perrier already. I have an addict’s personality, I guess.

2721. Magoseph - 3/8/2005 12:51:13 AM

By the way, Jen, how do you feel this time around?

2722. Jenerator - 3/8/2005 12:53:05 AM

Mago,

I am the type of person who cannot snack. I can't just have little bowls of candy sitting around, I'll eat it all.

2723. thoughtful - 3/8/2005 3:20:38 PM

I like the flavored seltzer waters...lemon lime, cran-raspberry, blackberry and so on. The vast majority of my fluid intake is plain water so I enjoy the variety of flavored seltzers now and again.

I never realized how lucky i was to be raised on and still live with well water. Our neighbors changed to city water. We had the pump in the well changed so weren't allowed to drink our water for a few days and begged some off of them. It tasted like dilute bleach. It was awful. And it made all the food taste awful too, especially coffee and tea.

Our well water is hard but has a fine taste. We had it tested and they found nothing harmful and only a high level of manganese in it. Not sure what that does or doesn't do for you, but there it is.

I get the nutrition action letter and they always have interesting articles in them. One was about dementia and alzheimers and what the latest studies say about prevention. Another was a review of, I guess you'd call them pub-type chain restaurants, like TGI Friday's and Ruby Tuesday. They had some best choices listed off the menu but had a close up on Ruby Tuesday as they actually publish nutritional info for their meals. I was aghast! One entree has 1,600 calories!!!! Most women who diet eat only 1,200 in an entire day. And imagine having that after their 1,100 calorie appetizer! And how can you not wrap up with the 1,000 calorie brownie sundae! I get nauseous just thinking about it. Obesity in america is not a mystery.

My hubby said how on earth can you jam so many calories into one entree. I said, think fat and portion size. If I eat at one of those joints, I typically bring home a doggie bag from which I get 2 more meals. 1,600/3 = reasonable portions.

Obese American passengers break the seats on the Queen Mary II

Dozens of seats on the Queen Mary II, the world's biggest, newest and most luxurious cruise liner, are being broken under the weight of obese passengers. The Telegraph has learned that the French company which supplied the chairs, both fixed and free-standing, claims that it is repairing and replacing them as fast as possible, as they creak and buckle under larger holidaymakers....

There are some things that need to be changed or replaced," he said. "For instance, there are some problems with the chairs because some of our passengers are heavier than we imagined."

The spokesman claimed that the problem seemed to be mainly obese American, rather than British, passengers. "It's not an English problem; it's probably more American," he said.

Thoughtful, you are so right about well water, when it's drinkable. Ours is great, and it's pretty soft water, too. We were on city water, and not only did it cost $50 a month, running a bath felt like bathing in a swimming pool. We got back on well water, and our only problem is that we need to get a generator for extended periods without electricity.

My hair always does great when I wash it at Arky's! ;-)

2727. arkymalarky - 3/9/2005 12:45:28 AM

Hey, that's what you can take home in the truck--lots of jugs of water!

2728. judithathome - 3/9/2005 12:59:42 AM

Great idea!! Remember when I wanted to do that, the first time we came up there!

2729. arkymalarky - 3/9/2005 1:01:16 AM

Yes, and I've thought about it since, but never when y'all are here.

2730. alistairconnor - 3/9/2005 11:31:52 AM

We have the best of both worlds : municipal supply which actually comes from local wells, and in general is completely untreated and delicious.

The water is soft, which is nice but has the side-effect of copper stains in toilets etc -- because of the natural acidity of soft water which dissolves the pipes from the inside. I can live with that. Also, the water from the taps upstairs has a coppery taste that some people find unpleasant. The water from the kitchen is fine, because the pipes are plastic up to that point.
