28003. PsychProf - 6/10/2014 12:25:08 PM Irv Snodgrass passed away June 9...he was such a fine man, the best life has to offer. 28004. lemwalker - 6/10/2014 1:19:30 PM Well that causes sadness. Yes Scott was a lot of fun. We went to a Thai restaurant and he shocked the staff by ordering our food in their language. I had always hoped to see him again. Guess that will have to wait. 28005. Ms. No - 6/10/2014 4:29:05 PM Although it's been years, I still feel a loss. I only got to meet him in person once -- at the Great Fray Gathering -- but I'm saddened to know he's no longer with us. 28006. arkymalarky - 6/10/2014 5:57:08 PM Oh how sad! I never did get to meet him. A lot of great memories, and I'm so sorry to hear it. Thank you for letting us know PP. 28007. wabbit - 6/10/2014 8:16:39 PM Oh Prof, what sad news, I am so sorry to hear this. I haven't seen him since the Florida trip, and we had such fun in Seattle and when we met up in NYC. He was such a good person, I learned a lot from him. He will be missed by many. 28008. judithathome - 6/10/2014 11:52:22 PM Certainly by Keoni and me...we spent a week with him one evening in Dallas...it felt like we covered enough ground for it to have been that long, anyhow.
He's part of the universe and all of us now. 28009. bhelpuri - 6/13/2014 12:20:38 PM Wow, that sucks. Rest in Peace, Irva.
More than anyone else - by far - it was the Snod who created, fostered, and shepherded this very real online community. It catalyzed around him, took many essential cues from the way he went about representing IrvingSnodgrass. Big guy with a big heart, one of a kind. 28010. wabbit - 6/13/2014 1:57:30 PM
Irv Snodgrass and Psych Prof (thanks for sending and sharing PP!) 28011. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 3:01:17 PM Love that picture. Captures two wonderful people and their wonderful personalities. 28012. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 3:30:26 PM You're right Bhel. And the focus was always on the community, never on himself. There has been so much development online since the Fray started, and there are a lot of great discussions to be found in a lot of online sites, but I've never seen anything resembling the dynamic the Fray had. Mostly, whatever the format or rules or participants, to me either it's an ocean or a cesspool of fish eating other fish, and I just don't enjoy digging through the sludge or vast salty water looking for gold any more. I very much enjoy the Mote as long as this lasts or as each of us drops off the conveyer belt, as Dad calls it. A small close community of old friends is hard to grow, much less maintain, but I'm so glad I dropped into the Fray and Irv was the gracious host so many years ago, and that Alistair and Wabbit have kept a fire in the hearth for so long. Even with my discovery of room escape games a few years ago, it's still my favorite place to visit on the web. 28013. alIstaIrcOnnOr - 6/13/2014 3:43:03 PM So sad to hear about Irving. It's odd, even after having visited him at home in Bali, met his children etc, I still think of him as Irving. The big-hearted, larger than life guy, the community builder, the pioneer of this social network thing. My motivation in building this site was to continue the community he built, when Slate cut us loose (and fired him). 28014. theDiva - 6/13/2014 6:11:54 PM Great picture and good God, were any of us ever that young?
I understand that he was diagnosed with cancer in April. The funeral is tomorrow at his parents' home church in Washington state.
28015. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 6:25:59 PM Diva! How have you been? We miss you! Thank you so much for coming in and sharing details of Irv's passing. I tried to find something online but didn't. 28016. theDiva - 6/13/2014 6:36:47 PM Arky! Yes, I had to do quite a bit of digging and figured you all would want an update.
Life is very, very good. How's by you? 28017. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 6:41:30 PM Same here! Stan just retired, so he's great. How's your daughter doing? Mine is a school librarian and happily married to a great guy who's working on a PhD in nanotech. No grandkids yet. 28018. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 6:43:07 PM I miss how we used to compare notes with her two girls. I think Moses was 13 when I started posting here. She'll be 30 her next birthday. 28019. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 6:43:19 PM Our... 28020. arkymalarky - 6/13/2014 6:55:27 PM Your younger daughter must be on up in high school? 28021. judithathome - 6/13/2014 9:14:06 PM Hey, Diva...howzit? 28022. Ms. No - 6/13/2014 9:40:40 PM DIVA!!! Swak!
