28107. robertjayb - 7/18/2014 8:02:04 PM Fifty-one on arrival in Wisconsin Tuesday. This followed 101 in Oklahoma along the way and high 90s at home in Texas. Very nice here today, about 60 at wakeup and our heroin-dealing former neighbors are gone along with all their clutter and squealing brats. Been too long since we could enjoy the pleasant little screened-in back porch. The good old boy landlord (and a helpful friend) is making repairs before renting again. Hope it takes all summer. Quiet is nice.
28108. arkymalarky - 7/18/2014 10:12:37 PM I can so relate Robert! I'm anxious to get to our deck in Colorado. We have lots of neighbors, but a private yard, and the preferred drug in Colorado leaves everybody pretty laid back and chill, so we never had an issue. Now that it's legal it will be less so I'm sure.
yeah judith, Stan told me I'm misremembering. I do that a lot. 28109. robertjayb - 7/18/2014 11:58:30 PM Today is our 50th wedding anniversary and it is fish-fry Friday night in Wisconsin. Two unquestionably important events. We're returning to the seen of my pre-wedding day antics. Doubt if I'll be able to sink as many brandy manhattans as fifty years ago. Maybe spouse will take up Gibsons again. 28110. arkymalarky - 7/19/2014 2:18:08 AM oh how wonderful! Congratulations! 28111. robertjayb - 7/19/2014 5:25:08 PM Well, if you had been on the scene fifty years ago you might have seen a scene. Doesn't every guy get married with a hangover?
I handed off the keys after two drinks and had just one more. Better for it this am. I was wrong about spouse's favorite tipple in wayback times. Gimlets, not Gibsons. And she had one after her usual bloody Mary. 28112. arkymalarky - 7/19/2014 6:33:55 PM Awwwww....
I've known 2 or 3 who got married when they were drunk. 28113. arkymalarky - 7/19/2014 6:35:35 PM Stan and I celebrated our thirtieth last October and we had plans to go to the beach, but life intervened. 28114. arkymalarky - 7/19/2014 7:33:40 PM re the conversation above about brush off lines, for some reason I just thought of one of my very favorites from the movie Rat Race: you shoulda bought a squirrel. I tell my students that. 28115. arkymalarky - 7/19/2014 7:38:17 PM but my research paper is on the flash drive that melted and I didn't save it anywhere else...well you shoulda bought a squirrel.
that actually happened to a student this past year, but hopefully he learned a good lesson. as a teacher I get to use that line more often then I might in some other professions 28116. arkymalarky - 7/19/2014 7:54:54 PM Than...
I have an idea for an app: Guess what I was really trying to say. like damn you autocorrect except you guess what voice to text got wrong and what it was supposed to be. 28117. wabbit - 7/22/2014 4:04:13 PM Happy Pi Approximation Day everyone!
Any excuse for a "holiday". 28118. robertjayb - 7/22/2014 6:33:37 PM Please explain for this innumerate. 28119. wabbit - 7/22/2014 11:08:03 PM We write the date as 7/22, but written with the day first, 22/7, it approximates Pi. Since Pi is irrational, it doesn't have an exact fractional equivalent. 22/7 is close, i.e. approximate.
As I said, any excuse... 28120. robertjayb - 7/23/2014 6:22:08 PM hmmm.
Well, I was a journalism major for a reason. Any excuse for a holiday/party I understand and support. 28121. Iiibbb - 7/24/2014 11:59:40 AM My wife, miles, mother and their shenanigans... And my wife's female coworkers antics will turn me into a misogynist yet.
#justdropit 28122. arkymalarky - 7/24/2014 11:54:00 PM Now now. Be fair. Consider the common characteristics of all types of people. Be a misanthrope. 28123. judithathome - 7/25/2014 12:18:46 AM When I was very young...like before Junior High school...my mother was reading this book called Too Late The Misanthrope and I always saw that title as being "Too Late the mis-ANTHRO-pee." 28124. arkymalarky - 7/25/2014 2:55:37 AM makes me think of Alice regarding the people who live on the other side of the world. "The antipathies, I think...." 28125. iiibbb - 7/25/2014 11:38:21 AM It is the types of skirmishes that women get into vs men.... Or at least the women in my life vs men.
Logically, I know everybody's the same. Let's just say the myth of women being the great communicators is dead to me. Three things, what is said, what is inferred, and what is said behind the scenes.... And what is known to be said in other circles even further behind the scenes.
All over trivial slights.
Maybe there are men like this, but thankfully they must not stick around. My BiL is like this, but he's a bit of a sociopath and not a good measure of anything. 28126. iiibbb - 7/25/2014 11:39:53 AM Trying to explain some of this would be like trying to explain a twin peaks episode.
