but you're at a Walmart.... soooo....

28298. arkymalarky - 11/16/2014 5:10:44 AM

right....something always makes me break my boycott Walmart pledge. this time it was that the dollar store didn't have a curtain the right size for our bathroom window. where I live those were my only options on Saturday afternoon.

I must be hallucinating from my cold meds. Arkansas leads Ole Miss 27 to zip going into the fourth period. Go Hogs!

Final: Arkansas 30, Mississippi 0. Sooweee Pigs!

28301. arkymalarky - 11/23/2014 3:32:07 AM

yayaya! We're at Mose's having Thanksgiving in Fayetteville, so everybody here is really excited!

28302. Ms. No - 11/27/2014 4:08:23 PM

I'm in Houston with my folks, my bro and sil and bro's kids. While we are also waiting for news of my great aunt's passing --- she had another stroke and slipped into a coma last week at the age of 90 --- we are looking around and thinking how thankful we are for all our blessings.

Every year, the Mote makes my list. It's kind of like your pinkie toe. It's small and you don't really have to have it, but you'd miss it if it were gone and your life would be a little less complete.

Moties, however, are far more vital and I am very, truly thankful for my friends here both past and present. I hope that you all are well, and even if you are a non-murrican Motie, Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

28303. arkymalarky - 11/27/2014 5:14:06 PM

What a wonderful post, No! Made me tear up... That post and watching the Thanksgiving Parade... The way you describe the Mote is perfeect! I'm sorry about your aunt. I hope you and your family enjoy a restful and restorative Thanksgiving reunion. I'm going to mom and dads today. I'm very thankful to be able to do that still. we'll go to the nursing home to see Stan's mother.

I hope all my Motebuds fabulous wonderful safe holiday!

Thanksgiving. Happy. Have one.
Holiday. Yeah.

Actually, I just had one. Got back on Saturday night from ten days in Thailand. Friends had the excellent idea of getting married there : he from Germany, she from New Zealand. Thailand is more or less halfway, has a warm pleasant climate, nice beaches and is fairly cheap to hang out and party there (I guess we're neo-colonialist oppressors... but hey, we tipped well)

28305. arkymalarky - 11/27/2014 7:52:14 PM

How cool! We're committed to go to a wedding in Thailand one day. She has to get a boyfriend first. But we'll have a lovely home to stay in and a wonderful cook who happens to be her dad , so I'm kind of ready for her to get a boyfriend.

28307. wabbit - 11/27/2014 11:36:31 PM

Well said Ms. No, thank you! The Mote remains near and dear. I've made many good friends here, and lost a few, and value each and every one. I don't get to see you all as much as I would like, but we have this little room on the web to stay in touch, and I like it here far better than FB.

Happy Thanksgiving, one and all!

My grant got renewed (in the $ millions) 3 more years and nice raise. Will also bolster my bid for the professorship job.

28313. arkymalarky - 12/14/2014 9:15:08 PM

Somebody killed in a car wreck first bridge up from my house in the bottoms. they just found them. Some people stopped by our house and said they saw a car upside down by the creek. Very upsetting.

28314. robertjayb - 12/15/2014 8:31:41 PM

I guess. Local person?

In way, way back times I remember a distant neighbor ran a Model T (got that?: Model T) off the road and into a rain-filled dish by our farm. An older woman, probably the guy's mother, was pinned in what was actually just a ditch and drowned. I was there when they pulled her out of the water. Probably the first dead person I ever saw. Still have that picture in my head.

28315. judithathome - 12/16/2014 12:29:49 AM

Oh, Arks...I know exactly where you mean...that must be sooo upsetting and reminiscent of the young girl who died when Mose was in high school.

28316. arkymalarky - 12/16/2014 1:51:45 AM

You're right judith. Her wreck was very similar to what Robert described above. This man wasn't under the water, but he had been there all night. Yesterday a young black couple we didn't know came up from the bottoms and stopped at the house and told spook and stan and Ronnie they saw the truck down under the bridge and asked if we knew anything about it, and they said no. I was in the house, so they all went down there and the young man and stan both looked in the truck and did not see anyone in it. The young man found some papers and looked at the name and he said I work with this guy, and he went up the road to the neighbors deer camp and they came down along with them and the man's ex wife, and she climbed down into the ravine where the truck was upside down and saw his hand sticking out of it. You couldn't even see the truck driving from our direction through the bottoms. They just happened to see it since they were driving from the other way.

Had we been outside, we probably would have heard it, & I feel really bad that he was there all night with nobody knowing he was there, but from the looks of the truck and what the EMT said that spook and stan heard, he probably died on impact.

Yes, Robert, I don't know him personally but our friends do, and he had been at a wedding party that evening with some friends of ours, but they said he didn't seem like he was drunk or anything. It was very foggy and those bridges are a crime. They're made out of the bottoms of railroad cars, and if you slip off of one, which he apparently did and rode down the whole length of the bridge with two wheels on the road and two wheels off, you're going to have a very bad wreck. This is the second person I know who was killed on one of these bridges, and one of them was a former student of mine.
