Catching up after a busy few months. Iiibbb, sorry to hear about your Dad. Mine passed a month before yours. he was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer a few weeks after his 90th birthday in August. He never really recovered from his biopsy and stent insertion. It was fairly fast and not too painful. Now my brother and I are dealing with his estate, and preparing to move my Mom down closer to me. She has Lewy Body Dementia, and is basically non compos mentis.

On the good news front, the remaining Wombling is in his Senior year of High School. He has been accepted at Pitt and Saint John's College in Annapolis. He is waiting to hear from Reed, which is his first choice. Wombette is finishing her third year at Ithaca College, and will be starting the graduate part of her Physical Therapy program.

I'm sorry to hear about your father, Wombatt. I'm glad your kids are doing so well, no surprise there.

28561. arkymalarky - 3/30/2015 12:25:15 AM

Friday @1:30 I headed home for spring break. Saturday my tooth broke and we had rain and company. Tuesday both left. Wed h&r block called and said we owe $6,000 income tax. Thur Mose came to stay a few days and I got sick. Still sick. Essay tests to grade, projects (100) to critique, 3 hrs inservice left to do. School tomorrow, Dr Tues and wed, tooth pulled and mammogram Friday. I want to hit something. Hard. And wasps have taken over everything here.

But I've been vegetarian over a month and that's gone well.

People always say you should never set up your witholdings so that you get a refund on taxes.

I know that financially this is sound advice; however, in terms of morale... I'll take my refund check.

Sorry to hear about your father Wombat. It was too soon. I miss mine. ---- but the thing that hurts the most is watching my mom.

28563. arkymalarky - 3/30/2015 5:58:39 PM

Best wishes for your mom, sorry. I hope things get easier soon.

We generally do our taxes in a way that we pay some, but not too much, because I get a stipend check in the spring from the National Board Certification; but this year Stan retired, and we really had no clue what to expect. We certainly didn't expect that though. But that was just one of the numerous things that pissed me off over spring break.

iiibbb:

Dealing with my Mom is far more depressing than the loss of my Father. Her body is still around, but her mind is long gone.

Growing older sucks in many ways. This is one of them.

Stan's mother is like that. It is hard to know how to minimize their anguish. Mose went by to see her Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon she was very angry (I never her saw her angry or cry before dementia) and had no recollection of Mose being there at all.

We got hit this year with a dun from the IRS for seven grand...I didn't even dispute it, just sent it in.

I always wondered, after Keoni retired, why we were still getting a modest refund since, when he was employed, we ALWAYS paid in more than he needed to and we would get a "refund" every year. After retirement...that didn't happen and thus...the seven grand hit.

Needless to say...we have an accountant this year. ;-)

28567. arkymalarky - 3/30/2015 11:10:23 PM

Next year should be better, and if not I'm switching. A former student always does them but someone else did this time, and I asked my student to please check it again. I requested she do them, as she has done every year, and they ignored it.

28568. arkymalarky - 3/30/2015 11:11:28 PM

Stan got a big chunk of money that he won't get next year.

28569. iiibbb - 3/31/2015 5:34:24 AM

Watching my mom go through the pain of losing my dad has been the most difficult part of losing dad.

28570. arkymalarky - 3/31/2015 8:09:50 AM

Are you nearby?

28571. iiibbb - 3/31/2015 8:28:16 PM

No, but flying down next week to spend a couple of days with her.

The short plan is that she lives where she wants, but at some point in the next 2-3 years she should try to move close to one of the three sons. Probably my older brother since he's got the most stable homestead.

28572. arkymalarky - 3/31/2015 8:56:28 PM

When two older parents no longer have each other, in whatever condition, it's often a total game changer for the kids. I feel for you and your family.

I laugh a lot and cry a bit every year when the red April Fools Day banners show up on the mote.

I'm bracing myself for tomorrow and trying to come up with a good prank at the same time.

28574. bhelpuri - 4/1/2015 6:25:12 AM

Ah yes, April Fool's at Le Mote. Always a nice reminder of long-gone action-packed days of this online community. My best to all of you who keep the faith.

Very early this morning, my 7-year-old woke me up (he still navigates from his room to crawl in under the covers with us most days before dawn)to say he doesn't like April Fools and to please not celebrate it, "I keep getting fooled."

So this year's cancelled. Please take note.

(Condolences to iiibbb + Wombat)

Sounds like a plan to me! Props to your kiddo...clearly a great thinker even at such young age.

Frankly, in this country, I think that in Washington DC, every day is April Fool's Day.

28576. Ms. No - 4/6/2015 3:35:01 AM

Happy Egg Day! Happy Passover!

28577. arkymalarky - 4/13/2015 9:47:03 PM

well, we're losing mojo. And we cannot get anyone out here to a house call to put her to sleep. To try to move her she cries and cries and she's just traumatized. She's comfortable and not in pain at the moment, but moving her at all upsets her tremendously, and she so heavy its almost impossible to move her without hurting her.

28578. Ms. No - 4/14/2015 1:03:23 AM

Oh, no! What happened to her?
