I don't, but a lot of people do. I've had problems occasionally, but it usually goes away after a few days. I didn't notice any problems this year, but I'm on new medicine for asthma and allergies that seemed to make that a lot better this year. It's so much drier, I breathe more easily because of that.

Spook got really sick up there this time, and he thought it was altitude sickness, but I think it was a stomach virus. He's been there too many times with no problem, but he puked his guts up one day while he was there this summer, all the way from Boulder to the cabin. So now I call him Spuke.

Two weeks ago this morning the University of Portland called Blair and I to tell us that our son, Reid, was dead. He slipped on stairs at his house and cracked his skull, went to bed and never woke up.

Here's his coach's tribute.

28716. arkymalarky - 8/29/2015 7:27:03 PM

Oh my. I don't know what to say. I'm so sorry. Your son was such an impressive person and I have followed your posts about him, and your positive and loving relationship was always so apparent.

28717. ms. no - 8/29/2015 10:32:03 PM

Oh god. I can't even think what to say except that I am so terribly, terribly sorry.

28718. robertjayb - 8/30/2015 4:31:41 AM

I have no words.

28719. bhelpuri - 8/30/2015 4:12:55 PM

unbelievable. so very sorry to read this, VonK. my thoughts + prayers are with you today...

Back to my initial point about Reid's healthy relationship with competing, which I still struggle with to this very day. I wanted to know how Reid competed so fiercely and yet didn't seem to have his self-esteem wrapped up in whether he won or lost. I would ask Reid, 'what did your parents (Bob and Blair) do that allowed this perfect connection of being heavily invested in winning and yet not let the result define you?' He would answer that his mom and dad would support him in everything that he did and always just encouraged him to do the best that he could. They didn't dictate his tennis career or treat him differently when he won or lost. He was unconditionally loved by his mom and dad every single day of his life.

This is the most touching thing I have read in ages...VK, I am so sorry that as parents, both of you have suffered this loss...nothing I or anyone can say will lessen what you are feeling and will feel forever.

My heartfelt sympathy to you both...

I am so terribly sorry to learn of your loss. There are no words, only a hope that with time you and Blair may find a way to comfort. What a wonderful tribute from his coach who so beautifully expressed what an extraordinary person he was. How fortunate it he was to have you as parents who helped him achieve all he did in his life that was so incomprehensibly foreshortened.

My deepest sympathies to you both.

Sorry VonK

Worst part of being a parent is the worry that this might happen.... The source of my worst nightmares and I have an overactive imagination.

28723. wabbit - 9/8/2015 12:22:49 AM

Oh VonK, I am so very sorry to read this sad news. You and Blair are in my thoughts and have my deepest sympathy.

Happy Birthday Mote! We went live 9/11/99, so we are sweet sixteen.

28727. arkymalarky - 9/12/2015 2:41:36 PM

Hey wabbit! And Robert, early October is just around the corner.....

28728. vonKreedon - 9/13/2015 12:18:10 AM

Happy Belated Birthday, Mote! So happy that you all are still around.

28729. Ms. No - 9/13/2015 6:07:01 PM

The best kind of people....even if we are five years older than I thought we were.

28730. robertjayb - 9/28/2015 4:11:40 AM

Okay, Arky: Major procrastinator here. Looks like the earliest we can get underway is Friday Oct. 2, if we get this place buttoned up. Things going reasonably well we should be in your vicinity by Sunday the 4th. Tomorrow I will charge up my soon-to-be-abandoned dumbphone. (979-229-7385) If you can call and if the phone works we can exchange some good numbers and I hope arrange a meetup. Be advised our travel plans often go awry, but we usually get there. Looking forward to it. Be advised also we are traveling with two dogs, one of which we just learned is diabetic...twice daily injections...the whole routine. Jeez.

Sixteen years! Wow.

28731. arkymalarky - 9/28/2015 1:50:31 PM

Sounds wonderful! Can't wait! I'll holler at you! A few years ago, one of my students looked at me and said, you always fly by the seat of your pants don't you? Don't know what made me think of that story. :-)

28732. arkymalarky - 9/29/2015 6:32:56 PM

Just called and left a message. Hope that was the right number.
