So Jen, I guess you're saying socks can not or should not be blessed? Now is that just Jex's socks, or all socks? Do you have a bible verse for that or is it just the Holy Spirit working through your life that tells you to ridicule false blessings? Is God actually prohibited from blessing Jex's socks, or have you put him on notice that it would be displeasing to you? I think you should maybe write this stuff down as new scripture so people can know.

The Catholic faith does endow its priests and saints with some fantastic magic powers. Starting of course with the ability to Transubstantiate wafer and wine into the very substance of the Christ, the ability to confer God's blessing on various animate and inanimate objects, and finally in the case of saints, for parts of their corpses to be blessings in and of themselves. Back when I was attending Parochial schools this magical element both intrigued and confused me. I loved the idea of being a magician, but why would God the Omnipotent and Omnipresent require this of us humans? Indeed, given His well documented wrath at people doing anything at all to dimish his position as the one and only God.

Wishing for an edit feature as I pushed Post too soon. The last sentence should read:

Indeed, given His well documented wrath at people doing anything at all to dimish his position as the one and only God, how is it that they get away with these bits of divine magic without being smote?

29287. Jenerator - 10/21/2008 8:19:16 PM

Jexster,

I started posting about the Catholic Church because *I* wanted to. I am a big girl and I can do what I want! I am not chained to politics like you are, nor do I have an ulterior motive in everything like you have.

You are so incredibly blind and ridiculous.

29288. anomie - 10/21/2008 8:20:29 PM

Being smote and cursed is serious stuff. Remember, even poor Moses was punished for speaking to the rock or not speaking, I forget which. That's why we need to be clear about the socks. Jen?

29289. Jenerator - 10/21/2008 8:27:26 PM

So Jen, I guess you're saying socks can not or should not be blessed? Now is that just Jex's socks, or all socks?

I, personally, do not see the point in blessing socks. How does Jex standing in a crowd of 100,000 get 'blessed' by a fallible human being who didn't even make physical or eye-contact with him? And are those socks now set apart for worship? Does he wear them when walking to his bars and porn lounges? Does he wear them when calling people niggers and shit piles?

Why would someone ask for 'consecration' or 'blessing' from a human? Why not Christ - Lord Almighty? THAT is the biggest problem in this, IMO.

Do you have a bible verse for that or is it just the Holy Spirit working through your life that tells you to ridicule false blessings?

Actually my Protestant beliefs suggest that Jexster's tendency toward making all things mystical and idolatrous is nonbiblical. Then again, it's common sense. Just as I disagree with the Mormon idea of spiritual underwear, I disagree with Jexster's 'blessed socks'.

Is God actually prohibited from blessing Jex's socks, or have you put him on notice that it would be displeasing to you?

God can bless whatever he wants.

I think you should maybe write this stuff down as new scripture so people can know.

No, adding to scripture is forbidden, and since I am not starting a cult, and instead believe the claims of the Old and New Testament, everything is covered.

29290. anomie - 10/21/2008 8:36:15 PM

So, you're saying Jex's socks might be blessed afterall? You acknowledge that you and God may have a different opinion about what and how he may bless things. I think you're making sense now.

29291. vonKreedon - 10/21/2008 9:02:24 PM

Jen's been quite consistent and clear in her belief that God can do whatever God wants to do, and if Jen has a difference with God then its up to Jen to say, "Ooops, my bad, sorry, you're right of course."

29292. anomie - 10/21/2008 10:30:25 PM

Jen is like many other self-styled "Christians" who say the most outrageous, unbiblical things and then deny it when asked specifically about the implications of their assertions and criticisms. I think it springs from their idea that they have a "personal relationship" with God, and can therefore pretend to know his mind and his will regardless of what their own scripture says. But really, they mold their God to fit their own prejudices, greed, and lack of personal ethics. That's not to say Jen is unethical, just that she can shape a God to fit her ethics. In this case her God would probably NOT bless socks. But is she absolutely sure?

29293. jexster - 10/22/2008 2:40:23 AM

In what we Catholics call my "apostolic mission", I am graced from time to time with what we Catholics also call "the charism of discernment of spirits" (Galatians 5:16-24)

Bearing in mind that it is very difficult to apply this Gift of the Spirit in cyberspace, it is not impossible.

I believe there is a distinct possibility that Jen suffers demonic possession.

29294. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 10/22/2008 4:32:50 AM

Ohioans--God's chosen people . . .

29295. Jenerator - 10/22/2008 1:15:48 PM

Jen is like many other self-styled "Christians" who say the most outrageous, unbiblical things and then deny it when asked specifically about the implications of their assertions and criticisms.

I think you have me confused with someone else.

I think it springs from their idea that they have a "personal relationship" with God, and can therefore pretend to know his mind and his will regardless of what their own scripture says.

You haven't been paying attention. From day one, 11 years ago, I have been claiming the the Bible is the plumbline for our beliefs. If what we believe or think contradicts scripture. SCRIPTURE is the authority. I have always admitted to being infallible and I have never claimed to know all of God's thoughts. However, we do have his scriptures and we can glean quite an insight into his nature by studying him.

But really, they mold their God to fit their own prejudices, greed, and lack of personal ethics.

Again, I think you are very confused.

That's not to say Jen is unethical, just that she can shape a God to fit her ethics. In this case her God would probably NOT bless socks. But is she absolutely sure?

This is so ridiculous. I don't pick and choose what scriptures I like. I don't then pick and choose bits of other religion to fit into my own beliefs. You are seriously, seriously confused anomie, and I think it's because even though you are an atheist, you feel sentimental toward the Church and feel the need to defend. It's making you uncharacteristically irrational.

29296. Jenerator - 10/22/2008 1:21:41 PM

I believe there is a distinct possibility that Jen suffers demonic possession.

Seriously, I challenge you Jexster. Go to your nearest Priest and ask him the following question:

Father, I am an unrepentent homosexual who likes young boys. I often demonize and sexualize young women, and I am known for being spiteful, hateful and downright hysterically obsessed with Republicans. I use profanity to suit my own purposes and my speech is peppered with vtriol. If Christ were to come back today, what would happen?

In other words, you need to worry about yourself.

29297. judithathome - 10/22/2008 1:59:29 PM

Well, if McCain gets elected, he can just rely on Plain to rid the coutry of the scourge of sin. I'm almost certain she would be happy to set aside parts of the wilderness in Alaska as camps for the evil homosexuals.

29298. thoughtful - 10/22/2008 4:07:39 PM

antinomianism

29299. anomie - 10/22/2008 6:47:11 PM

Jen, you're right about one thing. The whole exchange has been ridiculous. But you continue the absurdity of it all by calling me "irrational". You give serious consideration as to whether a God has or has not blessed a pair of socks and you call me irrational. Look again and you'll see that I have been perfectly rational while having a little fun.

29300. wonkers2 - 10/22/2008 8:24:19 PM

Anybody else seen "Religulous?" I thought it was pretty funny.

29301. TheWizardOfWhimsy - 10/22/2008 11:56:10 PM

It's on my list, wonk.

29302. jexster - 10/22/2008 11:56:13 PM

I'm a BIG fan
