Between Feinstein and the NRA I honestly don't think there is a sane person making decisions wrt gun control on the national stage.

But if I were to give odds on whether a new AWB or a cop in every school would be more effective in preventing these events.... I'd pick the cop.

I have low confidence an effective proposal will be found.

45575. arkymalarky - 12/22/2012 6:42:47 PM

No way on the cop. Too many places to cover and to easy to account for their presence and target them first in a pre planned attack. Plus, schools are no morecdangerous than malls, theaters or any other public places where numbers of peoplecare confined.

They will ban assault weapons again and the large clips if there's any sanity left in government. There's absolutely no valid use for them for civilians. They will also tighten background checks and close loopholes. They need to increase state and family control over those who are mentally ill and get them help. That needs to happen anyway. Too many people have been suffereing with zero help or recourse.

Hate to sound like Debbie Downer but I seriously doubt "they" will do anything...Congress is not going to move on one blessed thing that Obama proposes...the meme of "He's going to take our guns!" has already started and the shit-for-brains Republicans will never agree to anything that flies in the face of their "A" ratings from the NRA...that's "A" for asshole.

This country idolizes guns, violence, and swagger and the people that represent the voters are being purposely blind to what the electorate actually wants in service to the few who think we need to be armed to the teeth so we can kill other people...domestic and foreign.

The USA is 1% of the earth's population and we own 50% of the guns worldwide.

45577. judithathome - 12/22/2012 7:29:45 PM

edit: 5% of the earth's population, 50% of the guns.

The large capacity magazines really aren't going to effect much. I mean, ban them if it makes you feel better, but Cho did what he did at Virginia Tech without them.

You could also ban semi-autos, assuming people would comply, but you'd be surprised how fast a revolver can be reloaded with some relatively low-tech speed loaders.

I don't think cops in schools are the answer by any stretch--- I merely said that if I had to lay odds between a cop, and a ban on full-capacity magazines would be more effective as a deterrent... I'd pick the cop.

It seems that many of these types of shootings involve months of planning... so I'm not sure if there is a canned approach that would help.

It has to be comprehensive, but if Australia can do it it's worth a try.

45580. arkymalarky - 12/23/2012 1:16:54 AM

And nothing is 100%. All or nothing almost always ends as nothing. I don't think folks will tolerate that any more.

Whether gun control has done anything for their crime rates is questionable.

Mass shootings is what people are mostly referring to. Our crime rate has been dropping steadily for a while.

Would he do it? I think it's a great idea.

Hawaii has its pick...

HONOLULU — Hawaii Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz on Wednesday was appointed the state’s next U.S. senator, bucking the dying wishes of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye to win the support of Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Schatz, a 40-year-old former nonprofit CEO who ran with Abercrombie for the state’s top two offices in 2010, beat out U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. The three candidates were selected by state Democrats earlier in the day.

45589. robertjayb - 12/27/2012 5:46:47 PM

Betcha the new senator's background keeps the nutters busy for quite awhile (from booman tribune):

He's Jewish and was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He went to the same high school as Barack Obama. He studied philosophy at Pomona College and spent a semester studying in Kenya. He has an interracial family with two kids. He got his start as a community organizer.

Schatz first became active in the community when he became involved in the Save Sandy Beach movement in the 1980s. He served as CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii as well as Director of both the Makiki Community Library and the Center for a Sustainable Future. In March 2010, Schatz stepped down from Helping Hands to focus on his campaign for the office of Lieutenant Governor.

And, of course, he was appointed by Gov. Neil Abercrombie who was good friends with Barack Obama Sr. when they were both students at the University of Hawaiʻi in the early 1960's.

As a fellow philosophy major and former community organizer, I kind of feel like I am getting personal representation. He's also three years younger than me, so he may be in the Senate for the rest of my life.

45590. judithathome - 12/27/2012 6:16:01 PM

Well....call me crazy but I think it would have been nice to honor Inouye's wishes and appoint an Hawaiian, not a haole, to the the senate. This guy Shatz at least sounds as though he's a "good" haole as opposed to the ones who move there and just take take take.

But I can guarantee you there are tons of native Hawaiians who will always view his choice as a direct slap in the face to Sen. Inouye.

45591. robertjayb - 12/27/2012 7:02:12 PM

Another group spring-loaded to take offense?

45592. judithathome - 12/27/2012 7:09:30 PM

Robert, this group of Hawaiians has been "spring-loaded", as you say, since Dole and the missionaries came in and took over their homeland.

Some groups with complaints have a point...they're not all crazies.

45593. thoughtful - 12/28/2012 3:11:52 PM

JAH, that's probably the most racist thing I ever saw you type....
