47323. Ms. No - 10/11/2021 5:55:59 PM Good lord, that's depressing.
But good to see you, Cos! 47324. vonKreedon - 10/12/2021 3:49:33 PM Good to be seen! 47325. alistairConnor - 2/27/2022 6:31:29 PM So, what are the likely influences of the Ukraine war on US politics?
A week or so ago, one of my working theories about Putin's deranged behaviour is that he believed his own rhetoric about only negotiating with Biden (being locked in the Cold War, the only important players, in his head, are he and Biden), and that Biden was weak, and could be manipulated.
Or just that, having had success in manipulating US elections, he wanted to project the meme of Putin strong, Biden weak, to help the Trump party to win the midterms by a landslide, paving the way for the return of the Don. Which would be, obviously, a huge win for Putin.
All of that turns to dust post-invasion, of course. Putin is obsessed only with the Big Picture, and his place in history.
But the effects on US politics are unpredictable for me, partly because I'm too lazy to keep up these days.
I think Biden, and the US intelligence industry, should get credit for accurately predicting Putin's move, and above all, for going public with it.
Of course, nobody (outside the US?) believed them, but still... 47326. Ms. No - 3/3/2022 12:49:08 AM I had to explain the whole thing to my seniors this week and found myself wondering just how biased my information is. I mean, I've thought Putin was a dangerous thug with world-domination dreams for years, so I'm not the most objective person on this one.
And hearing about those to meat-puppets showing their asses at the State of the Union Address and that Manchin has finally decided that he'll openly sit with the Republicans rather than sucking their toes from across the aisle....it's all just depressing as shit.
One of my students is reading The Handmaid's Tale for the first time. It's freaking her out daily and she ran up to me this morning asking "Ms. O, what would you do if this started happening for real?"
And I was at a loss because I feel like we are already on the path and what exactly HAVE I done other than March and shoot my mouth off?
I mean, do I start keeping money in a mattress and planning my escape? Or just buy a bunch of guns and plan to go out in a blaze of glory?
Sheesh. 47327. Ms. No - 3/3/2022 12:49:43 AM two, not to
47328. Ms. No - 3/3/2022 12:55:11 AM I suppose my virulent dislike for Putin is countered by the fact that I've been pointing out the massive anti-communist bias in our textbook all year.
Not that I'm pro-Communism, I just think it's ridiculous to be so afraid of something that you have to lie about it. 47329. arkymalarky - 3/12/2022 6:10:04 AM The fact that trump had told people he was going to abandon nato when he was re elected just reminded me: early in my career a student came in to a final exam with a cheat sheet. I saw it and for the final kids could take their test and leave and he sat till after all the kids were gone because I never gave him an opportunity to use it, and when the last kid left he just pulled it out and started looking at it. I just picked it up and gave him a 0 and that was that. To me that's how Putin did. With trump gone Biden was obviously not going to give him any quarter to do something on his watch, so he really had no other option but to invade. He's 70 years old and if he wants to get his lifelong dream accomplished he'd better hurry up. And of course now his fate and place in history is sealed and he won't achieve his goal. 47330. vonKreedon - 3/21/2022 3:50:49 AM Ms. No said, " I mean, I've thought Putin was a dangerous thug with world-domination dreams for years, so I'm not the most objective person on this one." I disagree, that's a very objective view of Putin. 47331. Ms. No - 3/26/2022 11:03:30 PM Thanks, Cos! -- always nice to be validated! 47332. Ms. No - 5/8/2022 5:52:55 PM I've tried to post about four different times now, but I'm clearly too angry to even approach coherent speech.
This fucking country and its fucking misogynist, racist, classist, greedy, cheating, lying motherfuckers is just too much for me right now.
When will these assholes just die already??
I'm not big on violent revolution, but I'm starting to believe that's what it will take to wipe out the outsized influence the radical right has on this country. 47333. vonKreedon - 5/10/2022 1:09:43 PM A thing is that the radical right is better prepared than we are for violent revolution. 47334. Ms. No - 5/18/2022 4:05:23 PM Yes, because they've been preparing for it for so long. Talk about self-fulfilling prophesies.
47335. Ms. No - 5/18/2022 4:05:44 PM At least Cawthorn lost his primary. 47336. vonKreedon - 5/19/2022 10:10:55 PM Apparently lying about members of your own party's sex and drug habits is a lie too far for the GOP.
47337. Ms. No - 5/21/2022 7:01:50 PM Apparently.
I'm just trying to figure out how the Democrats never learned to fight the gaslighting of the Republican party. Even when the Dems have the power, they don't use it to curtail the shenanigans of the far right. They do a much better job of supporting the right by suppressing and disempowering their own progressive wing.
Dr. King's comment that the biggest threat to racial equality is moderate Democrats is proven day after day.
Biden and the Dems have wasted their time and now it's almost up. They should've hit Manchin and Sinema hard in the beginning. Should have pushed through the filibuster and expanded the Supreme Court.
But no, they've been too concerned about how a bunch of people who already hate them would accuse them of being corrupt.
Don't give gaslighters the time of day. They're going to accuse you of atrocities no matter what. Might as well get some shit done to protect the citizenry and Democracy while you've got the power. If you lose the next election, then at least the Republicans have to work to undo things.
I'm just so frustrated and angry and I hate it. 47338. vonKreedon - 11/3/2022 9:48:43 PM I'm feeling sick with fear about this coming election and its likely consequences for future elections and the future of our freedoms.
47339. vonKreedon - 11/9/2022 7:30:25 PM Well, that has gone much much better than I feared. The big downside is that DeSantis is the big winner, not just in his landslide victory for Governor, but Florida turning from purple to deep red under his administration, and Trump being the big loser. 47340. Ms. No - 11/18/2022 3:48:14 AM Yes -- I was talking with a friend just the other day about the sense of relief that we didn't realize we needed. It also looks like some of the more sensible GOP heads are trying to take their wing-nuts in hand. Nothing is going to "school" the Freedom Caucus, but the vast majority of the GOP establishment is freaked right-the-fuck out by this latest election. I'm hopeful that they'll now do what they should have been doing all along: putting a muzzle on their rabid dogs. 47341. vonKreedon - 11/18/2022 9:08:57 AM Kevin McCarthy has the pain in the ass he deserves in his party's 'Freedom Caucus.' It'll be interesting to see what he ends up giving up to get enough votes to be elected Speaker. 47342. Ms. No - 11/29/2022 1:09:45 AM And then how long it takes before they give him the boot like Boehner and Ryan and....wasn't there another short-tenured GOP speaker?
