This has been a DIY summer, and last summer was too. We let so much stuff go for so long while I was doing rural Ed activism, having a hysterectomy, going to graduate school and getting national board certified, that our whole place was falling apart. Problem is we're not very handy, but we need to learn before we get to the CO house.

hi
moving in 4 weeks.
work is going well. I would say the odds of me staying on for more than 2 years are better than a coin flip right now, but nothing is assured yet.
Father in law car situation has been not too bad until last week when he threatened to call the cops on me for stealing it. I was caught a little off guard because the usual delay tactics weren't working. My new method is going to start every response with "it's between you and you're Dr. They put a medical suspension on your license, and until they take it off I am not allowed to give the car back. You will have to call your Dr."

Good call on pushing the car issue back to his medical condition. Best of luck.

First thunder in a while, stan's at his mom's, big dogs run in, little one runs out. Ugh.

iiibbb, glad to hear things are easing up for you. Hope it continues.

Mazie is funny. She minds Stan but not me, so when he's not home and she won't mind, I say "Stan!" like I'm calling him to tell on her, and she does whatever it was I was trying to get her to do. Stan hates me doing that, so I only do when I think she could get hurt or do damage, like pooping upstairs when she thinks we're not noticing. We have to use a baby gate on them, because she is totally house trained, but has a compulsion about upstairs.

I need help, advice on getting and keeping squirrels out of the house. Our Colorado house, so we will be gone until next summer.
4777. judithathome - 7/26/2012 4:27:28 AM
All I know is to stuff any holes that could be a way into the house with steel wool...including vents, etc.
4778. arkymalarky - 7/26/2012 4:24:39 PM
Thanks! This house has been empty so long the holes are numerou, but that's a great start.

I've been on the garden web a lot....they have a home side as well where I spend most of my time. You might post there about the squirrel situation....

Thanks! The main problem is that this is a summer place we bought last year that was an unfinished remodel that had been empty several years. The squirrels have owned it and we won't be back in it until next summer, so whatever we do will be something we get done once and then leave for a year. It's tiny but has a lot of places on the outside that squirrels can get in.
I'll check that site out. Thanks for the link!

Hi, Arky -
If you think you may have squirrel problems when you're away, IMO, you should use conduit (or BX) for all your AC wiring, especially in the attic. Bored squirrels like to sharpen their teeth chewing on Romex (the plastic coated stuff meant for installation without anything around it), as well as doing other things to it that causes a fire hazard.
Of course, you may be able to seal all the openings, but that might be temporary if squirrels can chew their way in again.
