Well, the food was fabulous at the Hawaiian Grille in Kileen TX yeaterday (160 miles from here) and the ride down south got off to a little later start than we'd planned; another couple went with us...not much later but just enough to set our return timeline coming home north being off and preventing us from being in a humongous multi-vehicle pile-up wreck on the way back!!!

Five huge trailer-trucks, one carrying hazardous waste, overturned and piled up...15 cars rammed into one another and one fatality happened when one of the cars was crushed between two of the semis. We were way in back of the traffic jam, coming upon it about an hour after the intial wreck...we were in that jam for 45 minutes until we got to an exit ramp and took backroads all the way to the next town....

Saw the news story after we got home and they said the interstate wouldn't re-open until after 9pm.

There were about 7 helicopters, HasMat trucks, ambulances, police, highway patrol...just scary shit. The other woman and I were crazed by the traffic all the way down to Kileen...we're not used to a lot of "open road" travel. Both of us would tense up each time a huge truck would go by; in fact, we finally ended up taking a mild "nerve" pill to calm down and thank god I had them in my purse!

Hey, Mags...howzit?

Very scary!

Saw the Beaumont thing on the news this a.m. How awful...over 100 cars for over 2 miles. Just terrible. Amazing the loss of life was so low.

Latest project...I'm making a veil for a bride who is getting married next july....she wants a cathedral length veil with some fanciness, so I designed this pattern out of alencon lace, with a monogram and will hand embroider with beads once the lace is appliqued onto the veil....a challenge since i've never done this before, but fun nonetheless. The pic is a mock up using an old sheet for the veil and I photo copied the lace to mock up the layout with....

Lovely!

Beautiful, Thoughful...be sure to show us the finished product!

Burning a rabid skunk carcass in the yard. Stan shot him repeatedly and he just kept moving. Ugh. This is the second we've had. A big downside of rural Southern living.

4829. thoughtful - 12/6/2012 4:31:58 PM

And how is that the good life????

Yuck.

4830. judithathome - 12/6/2012 11:10:51 PM

Better than posting it in Politics or Religion & Philosophy!!

4831. alistairconnor - 12/26/2012 3:18:13 PM

Probably a safe bet that the skunk was Republican.

He was awfully stubborn about accepting his fate.

snicker

Wish me luck --- I'm off to make my first attempts at pesto. I'm trying a roasted red pepper and a chipotle, both. If it turns out okay, I'll post recipes!

If it sucks, I'll come plead for help. ;-)

4834. arkymalarky - 12/30/2012 4:09:14 AM

I hope it works because I'd love the recipe but I'd be no help.

When do you go back? I go back the 3rd but Stan is out to the 7th.

Update on wedding veil....the veil is cut, straight and even. Yeah!

I've appliqued on 7 of the 11 pieces of lace and so far so good... then I have to do the hand beading on it...then I still have to figure out how best to dye the monogram as it's white and needs to be ivory. I'll attach that last.

4836. arkymalarky - 1/11/2013 5:09:54 PM

Lovely!

4837. judithathome - 1/11/2013 8:48:43 PM

Ooooh, that's so pretty! And the perfect initial...heh.

When is the wedding?

4838. thoughtful - 1/12/2013 4:00:58 AM

Not until July so I have some time to figure out the rest...but I'm pleased and tankful for how it's turned out so far....

4839. Ms. No - 1/12/2013 6:32:04 PM

Lovely work, T'ful!

Update on Pesto - It was pretty good, but not exactly right so I will not post a recipe yet. It'll probably take me a couple of tries to get it where I want it.

I only ended up making the Red Pepper one, but I still intend to do the Chipotle.

A cardinal, a robin, doves cooing and coming to the bird bath. A downy? or hairy? woodpecker. Squirrels canoodling on the patio furniture. Lizards (Anoles?) catching some of the weak but welcome sun. The Chronicle's weather guy says Houston has probably had its coldest day of the season and temps in the 70s are forecast for most of next week.

What's happening. Couldn't be global warming. Could it?
