5014. judithathome - 9/15/2013 5:25:01 AM We used to go to Gallery Night...it was started decades ago and we enjoyed it because it was just the arts community and a few people who were curious ABOUT the arts community.
But we've stopped going because it's become a trendy thing to got to and "be seen" going to. You can hardly move through the galleries or get far enough back to actually view the art works with a decent perspective.
People don't give a crap about the art, they just want to be seen at the galleries and scoop up the free food and drinks. 5015. webfeet - 9/15/2013 10:01:34 PM Trop tard, mon ami. Vacances has to end sometime and we are now back in nyc. But that is a lovely geste and perhaps next year we can drink the Dalmatian wine--if it is still good a year from now. This year, we toured Chateau Lacoste, a domaine that has been turned into a chic cultural center designed by Jean Nouvel and a list of intl architects whose futuristic concepts bring the vignoble into relief. Nouvel designed these super high-tech barrels that reduce the sulfate; the good news is that you could probably drink three bottles and not get the slightest headache! Im sure you've heard the buzz. Why I mention it is that we tried Les Pentes Douces, a creamy white, that haunts me still! Do you know it? Im spoiled now. For good.
And it's a pity I left before the arrival of your youthful doppel-ganger, Pete, who is probably enjoying les jolie filles d'Aix. On connais la chanson... 5016. webfeet - 9/15/2013 10:04:26 PM Art galleries are trendy?? Hang on. My jaw just dropped to the floor. Who let the philistines on? 5017. judithathome - 9/15/2013 10:19:37 PM Well, we yahoos in Texas will go anywhere for free food and drink. 5018. arkymalarky - 9/15/2013 11:36:51 PM Meaning that lots of people go do them when they used to not, I think it's a good thing. It's a certain common social type that friends of mine wrote a song about a long time ago called "Jack and Jill":
...to know them's a thrill. They sparkle like cheerful bubbling sunshine milk. O barbie and ken got nothin on them. They're fashion-conscious they'll believe in whatever ideals are in. 5019. judithathome - 9/16/2013 5:30:57 PM Exactly....the women all have Birken bags (practically empty because they have to display the behemoths on their outstretched wrists, palms up because the important diamonds are on the other hand) and the guys only shave once a week, artfully scruffy. 5020. thoughtful - 10/4/2013 4:35:07 PM Ready or not, here comes fall!
5021. robertjayb - 10/4/2013 6:19:47 PM Yes. An enjoyable (mostly) Wisconsin summer is coming to an end. Time to bugout back to Texas. Leaves are turning and falling. Geese are flying and squirrels are carrying walnuts.A old neighbor scared me yesterday by remembering a 10-inch snowfall on October 10.
Much fretting over how to leave the house. We had breakin last winter which unnerved the spouse considerably. Pissed me off. After kicking in a basement window all they took was our new flat screen. Bastards! And we are worried about freezeups and snow removal. Our 85-year-old house-watcher is slowing down so we will have to hire a snow guy and ask for the village police to keep extra watch.
So, on the road again.
Our intermediate travel objectives are food: Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken in Little Rock, authentic pan-fried chicken-fried steak at Mary's Cafe in Strawn, TX. and home to Fargo's for genuine barbecue. Burp!
5022. judithathome - 10/4/2013 8:33:03 PM You should make a detour to Delight, Arkansas and stop at Mom's...best Reuban sandwich south of NYC.
On marble rye, no less! 5023. Trillium - 10/4/2013 8:49:45 PM Happy traveling, Robertjayb. Just a thought ... one of my kids is housesitting for the month, for a couple who travels a great deal and needed someone to look after their (ailing elderly) cat! The situation is a godsend because she changed jobs and couldn't find a reasonable apartment right away.
Another friend, a successful writer, has gone to Newfoundland (of all the cold places!) to housesit for people who have property up there but don't spend the whole year there. She is getting a lot of writing done in the different setting.
If you can find a responsible person for the winter, it might be a good deal for everyone... 5024. arkymalarky - 10/4/2013 10:53:57 PM Yay Delight Mom's!
Our CO house isn't habitable yet but the neighbors keep a good watch so far. 5025. arkymalarky - 10/5/2013 12:36:01 AM You really ought to swing by Robert. We're four miles off the interstate 5026. webfeet - 10/7/2013 11:24:50 PM So jealous of your friend, Arky, even though it sounds a little like "The Shining." What I would do to write in solitude--. I'd be able to finish all my projects!
I briefly had a week in Aix, then belle mere's good friends who live next door to la famille in the Alps put me in La Chambre des Abeilles, or the 'Bee Room' which was formerly used by the peasants to make honey. I used it as my bunker. I kept a bottle of wine in there, laptop, and by the end of the day, my children were playing hide and seek under the cot. I could have lived there. Except that at night, I was afraid of seeing a werewolf outside my window.
Speaking of werewolfs, reading Fred Vargas (Frederique) 'Seeking Whom He May Devour' (je ne sais pas le titre en Français) a thriller about the wolves from the Mercantour and a murder that takes place in the French Alps, a story close to my own heart. 5027. arkymalarky - 10/7/2013 11:53:49 PM that was Julian's friend, websitte, but you could suddenly right in solitude here. 5028. arkymalarky - 10/7/2013 11:55:26 PM that was Trillium's friend, webfeet, but you could certainly write in solitude here. 5029. arkymalarky - 10/7/2013 11:57:12 PM before and after: voice to text unedited, voice to text edited 5030. webfeet - 10/10/2013 2:41:50 AM Nice inner monologue, arky. Yes, that's why I don't log in very often. 5031. arkymalarky - 10/10/2013 3:04:09 PM Not an internal monologue webfeet, just a correction. You were looking at Trillium's post before, not mine. But I live in a very bucolic environment, so it's a great place for writing. Fortunately or unfortunately, however, with my new job I do a lot of my posting while stan drives us to work and back. 5032. Trillium - 10/13/2013 2:36:49 AM Some time ago San Francisco was in the news with pear twigs grafted onto ornamental Bradford pear landscaping. I loved that.
My own stealth project was to toss heirloom "tommy toe" tomatoes into random shrubbery and see what happens. :) this year I have two tomato patched literally going wild, one over my brother's azalea bushes and another near a public sports field where I like to walk. :) I very gratified and am going to redouble my efforts this fall. I would like to see wild random tomato patches, like blackberry brambles, all around!! 5033. arkymalarky - 10/13/2013 3:14:21 AM Stan loves tommytoes. We should try that!
